How is Yoshinori Kitase not on this list? He directed Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, and Final Fantasy X.
you know, I had thought about it but the list was already getting long, it's been so long since he's had a director credit (24 years), and his name just never seemed to get the status/notoriety of the kojima/mikami/nomura/etc

which is a shame too because FF VI - VIII plus Chrono is one HELL of a fucking run

Yeah, that's what I thought.
Victory lap over arguing about Kamiya's photo? Get a grip. No I wasn't being an elitist, or gatekeeping. I made a reference/joke about a reoccurring tweet he makes that is actually quite funny. Sorry I didn't answer you question exactly how you wanted, but taking it as some personal slight and trying to label me with a bunch of buzz words is a bit much. Dial it back.

girls, girls - you are both pretty.

Jason Jones if for no other reason than Halo Combat Evolved and Halo 2 🙌🙌🙌🙌 I would have been fine picking Miyamoto. He's a Nintendo legend and I love most of his games, but Jason Jones man.

I'd also nominate Steven Rechtschaffner and Scott Henshaw.

(They were the leads in multiple EA Big games during their peak including all of the SSX titles, Street Games, and Skate).

Here I rank my top 10:
1. Hideo Kojima
2. Shinji Mikami
3. Hinorobu Sakaguchi
4. Shigeru Miyamoto
5. Yoko Taro
6. Ken Levine
7. Gabe Newell
8. Kenji Inafune
9. John Carmack
10. John Romero

Honorable mention: Kim Hyung Tae

Aonuma's been doing a bang up job with Zelda since the N64 days. TotK is an incredible piece of work.

With that said, I love how Sakurai approaches game development. I'm not even that big of a Smash Bros fan these days, but the way he approaches and deconstructs genres to find what makes them fun at their core then builds the entire game around bringing that out is inspiring.

How dare you forget about my man Sakurai.

Gabe & Carmack were never directors. John was the engine/graphics guy, and Gabe founded/managed the studio and acts as EP, he doesn't have director or designer credits on any Valve games

Thanks for the information and correction. But I still like them.

That's fair, and indeed they are both worthy of much praise - Carmack is the reason 3D FPS existed during the DOS era, and iD was on the forefront of 3D graphics technology for a long time. But the other parts of Doom - level design, structure, network deathmatch, etc was Romero and Hall.

Obviously HL was an incredible leap in FPS design as well, but I'd argue at this point GabeN's biggest contribution to gaming is not their games, but their platform.

Yukio Futatsugi - of Panzer Dragoon and Phantom Dust fame

He was not on the list so I went with Miyazaki.

In no particular order..

Hironobu Sakaguchi
Dan & Sam Houser
Gabe Newell
Shigeru Miyamoto
Shinji Mikami
John Carmack

Wasn't Jason West more the director, Vince was the business guy?

I know the linear blurred a bit but looking back at IW/COD and Respawn stuff Vince isn't a director on any of them.
I think he is all of the above. From my understanding he has designed/directed while also founding Respawn etc.
Currently director of new Battlefield.

My boys Housers/Benzies changed gaming for me and each game became bigger and bigger with the quality of each game maintaining throughout.

So many good directors on the list though.

I identify with none of these.
Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

+1 write-in for Tomonubu Itagaki. I recently finished Ninja Gaiden 2, and except for the last three chapters being a dud, it was an experience that blows the last two gens out of the water.

I-I can't choose. Too many great artists.

If anything, I would have to go with Mikami because of Resident Evil so it has to be this.

Fucking evil decision.

Tough to choose, but I put Shinji Miami for the fact that, across genres, he is able to design game mechanics seemingly from the ground up and build amazing games around it.

If Ken Levine had more output in the past 12 years, he might win for me.

Also a big fan of most on the poll.

Got to be someone who was involved in these games:

Elden Ring
Super Metroid
Hollow Knight
Skyrim
Ori
Dungeon Master
Metroid Dread
Turrican
Shinobi 3
Zelda A Link to the Past
The Last Ninja
Mass Effect
Uncharted

I'll go with Yoshio Sakamoto, director of Super Metroid. Super Metroid was my favorite game of all time for 30 years.

So, I guess I'll vote "I can't believe you forgot…."
