OTTAWA (CP) - Canada's immigration website is being flooded with a record-smashing number of visits from U.S. Democrats dismayed by the prospect of four more years living under President George W. Bush.

His re-election has some long-faced U.S. liberals apparently musing that perhaps Canada's cold winters, high taxes and strained health system are more easily endured than their commander- in-chief. A new record was set within hours of Bush's acceptance speech as six times more Americans than usual surfed the site Wednesday.

The overall number of 179,000 visitors was almost twice the previous one-day record set last year and a whopping 64 per cent of visitors - 115,016 - were from the United States.

Honestly, I've thought of it...Canada is peaceful so I've heard....Plus they have free healthcare and smokeshops! Shit yeah...I mean "Eh"!

That would be a pretty funny reality show, actually. See who can be the most polite. Say, in New York. Winner gets the 6 months living expenses you need to immigrate to canada.

Actually I was in Vancouver yesterday on business. It seems OK, but it's still not cold enough for me. Maybe Edmonton.

I wouldn't mind living in Canada, but I'm not motivated by my government -- I'm motivated by Coffee Crisp.
I can understand that Canadians wouldn't want a bunch of Americans in thier country. We have some pretty ignorant people here. Thats why I am considering getting the fuck out.
And lord knows that's not ignorant at all!

Being an American is great in a lot of ways, but it sucks in a lot of other ways...namely our "culture", if you even want to call it that. My brother visited Toronto this past summer and he told me I need to pack up my shit and move out there. So If I ever did relocate, which isn't very likely to happen despite however much I would want to, I would move to Toronto.

The peace and the smoke shops were already a draw for me, Bush is just the icing on the cake.

One plus, imo, about Vancouver is the annual fireworks show. This year's show (which was a couple months ago) was really impressive. If you have an apartment down by there, or a friend that does, it's a great evening.

And lord knows that's not ignorant at all!

How is not wanting toassociate with the ignorant make me ignorant?

I figure Canada probably has plenty of a-holes..just not nearly as much as we do.

A friend of mine emigrated for Crunchie bars (chocolate covered sponge toffee).

She got up here, ate about two boxes of them and now can't look at one without getting sick.

Somehow Vancouver seemed to be a more boring version of San Francisco. A lot cleaner though. Did you check out Victoria or Whistler?

Because you've convinced yourself that "ignorant" actually means "disagrees with you" somehow.

Regrettably I was only there for the day, and most of that day I was either at the airport or an office building. So I saw a lot of Burnaby mostly, which looks like those long shots of Flint, Michigan residential areas you saw in Roger and Me.

Darn their airport looks nice, esp considering the city itself isn't that big. But yeah, check out some of the surrounding areas when you go up there again.

Hmm. I must have forgotten those areas. There were some shabby houses on Vancouver Island, but nothing horrible. Pretty typical lower class housing. Is Roger and Me the one where the
woman kills and skins the rabbits
?

I can guess why! You should have checked out Davie St.

Burnaby is so hit or miss. When it borders with East Van, miss. Borders with New Westminster.. miss. Everywhere else is really nice. I live in a pretty good area.

I used to live in North Burnaby. I liked it a lot. Everything was pretty accessible without being crowded. South Burnaby sux.

I'd like to go to Canada.... I'm from australia tho; Canada seems to combine the most positive aspects of america with the positive laid back aspects of australia. Along with snow! Which i've never experienced in my life! :p

If I were american I definitely would want to be Canadian. They seem to be only civilised people over there. Plus they love hockey so they must be smarter too.

Is Davie St. like the gay ghetto of Vancouver? I'm kind of talking about how the two cities have a nice level of density. That and the summer weather, mood (yeah that term isnt too helpful), and Asian populations. San Francisco just seemed to have everything Vancouver did, but more intense.

David St = the gay, yes (nice street, tho. not a ghetto)

Intensity? From what I remember, San Fran may have had a better atmosphere, if that's what you mean. But it doesn't have the environment of Vancouver.

Why move to Canada when you can move to much cooler places abroad? Places that aren't so damned cold, too (I spent 5 years in Wisconsin, I'm never going back).

There's this hilarious restaraunt on Davie St (I forget the name), that has a really screwed up menu. :lol

I'm interested in seeing if all those celebrites that talked shit about moving up here if Bush got re-elected actually follow through on it, particularly since much of Hollywood has gotten all bitter about Canada stealing all their precious movie shoots.

As for stupidity, we've kept a pretty dim Liberal party in power for four straight terms, so we're not exactly loaded with Einsteins here either. Though to be fair their competition the last 15 years has been abysmal, so I imagine it's been a "devil you know" kind of thing (not unlike Tuesday).

With all that said, you could do a lot worse then moving here to Toronto, or out west to Vancouver. Though I'll warn anyone considering Toronto right now...the traffic situation the last few years has become horrendous, with no end in sight.

My opinion on everyone fleeing to Canada is that if you're such a pussy, I really don't want you in my fucking country. You're not an intellectual or a liberal. You're just a pussy.

If you had a pair, you'd try and fight the system instead of running away like a fucking baby.

Well, I personally won't be able to leave the country for maybe another 4 years. However, after reading -Jinx-'s links, I've been a lot more curious about immigrating. I come from a line of refugees anyways. Might as well carry the tradition.

That's the spir- OH WAIT NO IT IS NOT.

I'm not happy about how this election turned out, but I'm just going to buckle down, not go apeshit like some of the liberals on the board, hope that Bush doesn't fuck things up too much and race to the polls with a vengeance come 2006 and 2008. I'll probably participate in political events and contact my representatives.

This is a logical course of action if you're really an American. If you're a pussy, by all means, go to Canada. Not that I have anything against Canada, but if they want you so bad, good for 'em. Maple syrup and all that jazz.

Shinobi said:
So I take it you're not interested in coming up eh?

Hell no. Canada is nice and all, but I like my country, even if I didn't vote for its leader. And no amount of maple syrup, free health care and marijuana is going to change that.
