I say every DS owner on this board send Nintendo an email demanding the wifi adaptor be available at retailers from the start. It's ridiculous to make us order it online from their damn site, you gotta pay s+h and then wait for a week or two just to get something that should be on shelves right next to mario kart

Let our voices be heard, goddamnit!

It is. If you don't have a wireless router at home or access to any other wireless network you will be able to buy a USB Adapter to plug into your home computer that is plugged into a wired internet connection. The USB adapter will make a wireless hot spot in your home.

Rather then sell it in stores initially, Nintendo has decided to only sell it online.

that's exactly the reason why Nitnendo doesn't sell teh dongle in retail

They DO NOT want people to get the impression that the Dongle is necessary to get DS online.

Yeah for thirty bucks you should be able to find an old B router, which is fast enough to rout any US Internet connection at full speed (11mb/s). I hear they work with computers, too! Not just DS's!

Oh, in that case just get a wireless router!

How much would this USB adapter cost? Because when you're using it and say you're downloading stuff on your PC, it could hurt your bandwidth. Might as well spend a few extra bucks to get a wireless router. Plus, some people may not have a router anyways and it behaves as a decent firewall.

So my guess is that Nintendo knows there are better solutions out there and you might as well go for that.
 
What is the problem with selling dongles online? Because you don't have a credit card and you can't steal your parent's cash and go down to the store to buy one?

If you are going to use the dongle, isn't it a safe assumption that you:
a) have permission to use PC / own a PC yourself
b) have an Internet connection

Why can't you buy it online? What's the big issue?

However...

The Play-Yan and Band Bros. expansion are both sold only online in Japan, but shops like Play Asia still sell them, so I don't see any reason why some stores won't buy a crapload of USB dongles and resell them either. So CHILL OUT!

About the only reason not to get a router over a USB adapter from Nintendo is ease of use. Stick the USB adapter in, and you're set. Get a router and you have to configure it, secure the network if you don't want your network open to outside users, etc. Some parents aren't going to want to go through all that trouble to get Timmy online with Mario Kart, they'll buy the adapter instead.

Of course now it's not going to be sold in stores so most parents won't know the adapter exists.
 
Certain advantages to the dongle include the ability to carry it to school/friends houses/starbucks with a laptop/ect, and play from said locations with little hastle.

I have a wireless router, but I was going to buy the dongle anyway for ease of play. Ordering online may be too much of a chore though :(
 
I don't really know anything about wireless networking...

I have 3 PCs on my network, none of which has a wireless card. In order to set them up, I'd have to buy 3 wireless cards in addition to the router, correct?

Seems cheaper to me to just get a dongle...
 
every wireless router i've seen can be simultaneously used as a wired router. so you can keep your computers hooked up however they currently are.

No, a wireless router is still the cheaper route to go in your case.

Just buy an affordable B wireless router (like D-Link) and make it the first wired stop after the cable modem.

The point is that you don't need the PC's to connect wirelessly--you're only concerned about wireless internet for the DS.

No, Mario Kart: Double Dash was evidence that Nintendo didn't listen. An online Mario Kart with a mixture of classic tracks and excellent new ideas, battle mode with bots, team racing, and decal editing is listening pretty damn well, all things considered. (No battle mode online is probably just a limitation of the game due to the way battle works versus racing that they can't work out in time for release.) An online Animal Crossing sequel is listening. Pulling back Metroid Prime: Hunters to rework it for online play is listening.

This is a stumble, I admit. I don't like it, whenever Nintendo is anxious about something, they restrict sales to their online store. GCN's component cables, the Play-Yan... There is no reason this shouldn't be stocked and sold in stores as a proper accessory, especially if the DS WiFi interface makes specific mention of it.

I purchase a dongle online while i'm at my 9-5 job. the guy delivers it but cause nobodys home he leaves it on the door step. I imagine the junkies who sit on the bench near my front door are not above stealing the mail. Maybe I'm being to hard on them though.
 
Would someone recommend a good wireless-enabled router that I could get that would let me use my current, non-wireless computers / Xbox?

isnt this thing just a usb wifi adapter you can buy in any computer store anywhere in the usa???

The big thing here is that some people need to find a reason to complain and criticize. Of those that are complaining, how many were even going to buy the dongle in the first place?
