Why are there negative connotations to the term 'dudebro'?

Because I intended for there to be negative connotations when I coined it.

It really has more to do with guys playing those games exclusively and making fun of people who enjoy games beyond that. Also, most dudebros use these video games to define their manhood, which is pretty pathetic.

I hate dudebros.

OP is not going to create some movement where dudebro is a term of comradery amongst douches. Defending it and trying to take pride in being called a dudebro without knowing what it actually means is the definition of dudebro.

In words he can understand

Son, I am disappoint

The top-to-bottom thought process that causes one to point out and lament "dudebro"-ism is one that I, as a Japanese arcade game loving Famicom cart collecting Arcana Heart enjoying GOG purchasing engine programming lag testing bonafide dork, cannot fucking bear

These dudebros sound mad. I don't know, play better games. Or at least stop falling into the trap of buying the same game every year for updates that probably could have been patched into last years version. But most of all, don't feel alone. Dudebros get more respect than weeaboos get more respect than dedicated indie bundle buyers.

Maybe I just hadn't heard it, but I also was not really aware of the term before that particular GAF post.

Which is kind of weird because I thought it was just a sort of joke about people who only play call of duty/sports games, and now the Sinfest webcomic apparently uses it fairly often in what seems to be a completely non-gaming sense.

I've been hearing the term "dudebro" a lot more in real life lately... thought it was just a NeoGAF thing but I guess it's now spread into the real world?
