Why are there no hyperrealistic animated feature films?

I've been admiring the work of Blur Studios over the past couple months and I'm trying to understand why there haven't been any high-profile animated films shot in a realistic style (to my knowledge)

Have you not seen Rango? It's an animated feature done with a primarily photo-realistic approach, which isn't surprising given it was done by ILM. It won the Oscar the year it was nominated, Tin Tin didn't even make the cut. ;)

because it's ugly.

especially compared to the real thing.

Rango is beautiful in its ugliness! ;P

But yeah OP, the studios most likely to pull what you're asking off that have the tech, pipeline, workflows, and years of inherent experience (i.e. the big VFX houses like ILM, WETA, etc) primarily work on VFX for live action films.

I should get the Rango blu ray, huh.

XiaNaphryz, since you worked in the VFX field, what other companies deserve attention that are often neglected in mentions?

Well, the characters are very stylized, so it doesn't count. :P
