Why are there not more Zelda clones?

I am amazed at the utter lack of other developers trying to make games in a similar vein as the zelda series. is the gameplay that hard to emulate and still capture that certain whimsy that the zelda series has always managed to maintain?

What other major gaming franchise have you been shocked to see remain relatively uncopied?

Because they wouldn't do it as well.

Or, they'd do it much much better, but have crappier sales, and never get a sequel. Then they'd get a sequel in development, and people would bitch about the art style, ignoring the fact that it's a sequel to one of the greatest games ever.

Or, they'd still do it much better, except for the annoying sidekick who rides on your back the whole game, and hand holds a little too much. Then Capcom would close down their studio, and there'd never be a sequel.

BG&E and Okami are both good games, but I wouldn't consider them "much" better.

Better in SOME ways? Sure. But not every way.

Arguable and I'm a BG&E and Okami fan. Also its hard to sell and needs advertising, since Zelda like games cost a pretty penny to make well. Zelda has a reputation and the full backing of Nintendo's fans and advertising machine.

Best Zelda "clone" ever:

To me, the closest thing to a "good Zelda clone" all this years is Fable..mainly because it had eveyrthing I wanted on a Zelda game (sword fighting, magic, semi-open world, choose your own path, etc.)...to some degree.. [though it lacked the whole puzzles thing]

Assassin's Creed plays a lot like a Zelda game, right down to the Hub World, horseback riding, Z-lock sword-fighting, and such.

If there were ever an HD zelda it could do worse than to copy AC's style.

Because Zelda is not a good game.

So very weak. Devs don't like copying anything from Nintendo's past. They've tried it before and it didn't get them the results they wanted. Heck where were my Mario 64 clones?! Banjo and...........? Whats worse is people not copying Nintendo's recent games. Why does Face Breaker look so much worse than Wii Boxing (mechanics wise)?

If it was 20 hours shorter, yes!

But the last part of the game was the best part. Hopefully you mean shave off the terribly slow intro.

sphinx and the cursed mummy was awesome. if it had the art chops of okami, people would be swooning over it instead. it's a much stronger game, and a much better "zelda clone."

Why do people act like Okami is such a freakishly long game? Unless you do absolutely every side quest, it is 35-40 hours. Big freaking Whoop. I finished in like, 38, having done a ton of exploration.

People would have liked it more if it was exclusive to one platform, sadly.

Have you played Okami? The game drags on and on and stop being fun after a while. It should have ended a one point. It would have been an amazing game if it had.

I'd love to see a Zelda-style game with a great story.

Majora's Mask and Wind Waker had great stories, though they weren't your typical RPG-twist and turn-stories with tons of cliches and spikey hair.

My first playthrough took me 74 hours man, and I didn't do all the side quests.

Try playing it. It's a good game, and very cleverly disguises the feeling of exploring when you're actually doing things the developers wants you to. And there's a little bit too much repetition.

Because Zelda clones itself already?

Also, Okami is arguably an over-extended Zelda clone. It certainly has all the requisite places, but it would be better if it was, yes, 20 hours shorter.

And it has a plot, which Zelda does not.

Exactly. It's really the only major component that's missing from Zelda games. Some have been good, none have been great. IMO the best concept for a storyline was in LttP, but the limited hardware capabilities wouldn't allow for anything as epic as it could have been.

Okami is the only well known one I can think of. I'm playing through it now, and loving it.

We need more Zelda clones. Tbh, we need more action/adventure games in general, whether they be more like Zelda, more like Ico/SotC, or more like Uncharted (which I suppose would be more action than adventure).

<3 action/adventure

And... pretty much every single 3D platformer since Mario 64? With a few exceptions, of course.

Alundra is frakking awesome. I think it's the last 'adventure/action' game where I actually became stumped. It's almost as if Alundra and Majora's Mask marked the end of any sort of difficulty in the genre.

I agree, I don't remember where I got my copy of Alundra, but I'm so glad that I did. Its easily one of my favorite PS1 games. Its a bummer the sequel sucks.

Game plays great on the PSP as well.

To me zelda games are all about the atmosphere. For this reason i find i really enjoy the storylines in zelda games even though they are so basic.

I don't see why people say Okami is too long.

It took me 40 hours, which is only 5 more hours than Twilight Princess took me.

I don't want more "Zelda clones", but I do want more action-RPGs. The more, the better, both 3D and 2D. Rocket Slime was fantastic.
