Why did Microsoft show so many Series X/PC only games at their stream? What happened to no exclusives?

State Of Decay 3
Forza
Everwild
Avowed
Hellblade 2

The Medium
Fable

All of those said Series X/PC only. The cross-gen stuff listed Xbox One at the end of the trailer.

How did this happen? For months we've been hearing how the Series X would have no exclusives and everything is cross-gen.

Almost everything mentioned is in pre-production or incredibly early (maybe Forza will make it out quickly anyway, as it has in the past). By the time they come out, it's likely the Xbox One will be put to pasture and Xcloud will be upgraded to Series X levels. There'll be no need for compatibility.

You didn't watch the conference, did you? Ninja Theory explicitly said that it's being developed on UE5.
Yes, but the engine isn't even ready yet. Epic already showed a roadmap. They'll be updating UE4 gradually until they release UE5 late next year.

Hellblade 2 is running on UE5. So now we know why that trailer looked so good. It's probably running Nanite and the GI rendering techniques. It'll be the first game to use the same tech as the UE5 tech demo.

The Hellblade 2 trailer did not run in UE5.

They said they plan to move to UE5, or maybe the move already happened but the trailer is UE4 according to Epic.

You didn't pay attention, did you? They said "we'll be building..." not "we're building..."

Note the difference.
Epic already confirmed that character capture on Hellblade was done with UE5 in real time, don't know how it's difficult to understand that they're using UE5 for the game.

Microsoft always had very tight relationship with Epic and Coalition used UE4 features for Gears that were not even released publicly at the time of development.

That was the creative vision that Phil was talking about. Any developer can chose to make a game exclusive or cross gen. What an amazing freedom of choice.

What is it with xbox fans and their denial?
Lol, I'm a PC gamer. If you are so naive to believe this nonsense about UE5 being designed around PS5 SSD then I feel sorry for you. Epic have been saying daft things about consoles for three generations now to hype up their engine. And of course it had nothing to do with Sony investing money into Epic...

Then don't believe it. Really don't care whether you do or not.

For years people BITCHED that microsoft wouldnt put halo on the pc and they abandoned pc gaming, now they put it on pc and people still going to bitch. They arent going to make a PC exclusive halo...
They literally cant win, you do know they make money when the game sells on pc too right?

I also know its hard to understand for some of you, but not everyone has a gaming pc or the knowledge to keep up with gaming pc's

Well everyone was saying PC was dead around that time. But Steam and a bunch of F2P games revitalized the industry that people started getting accustomed to gaming on PCs and started investing in PC. Devs were dropping support for PC or delaying releases Games were not always stable. The PC industry was nothing like it was today in 2008.

Well the PS4 is like a ":perfect gaming PC". Where things are easy for developers and things just work for the player. It's just not upgradeable. Which is really not something you expect for a lot of consumer products.

It's very subjective on what is better, more raw power probably not. But they are not basing their opinion on raw power. They are looking at it as a tech perspective and development perspective and choosing metrics they subjectively think is more important. In the context, I believe he was saying that the architecture was far above top-end PCs. The the article writer just sensationalized and broadened version of what was actually said.

Going back to the other topic you two were talking about. UE5 will be a multiplatform engine that is even coming to the Switch and likely mobile, they will likely make optimizations for being able to rely on having super fast data but it's very unlikely it will be a critical aspect of the engine where the engine won't work without meeting that requirement.

As a Xbox One day-one-participant this confuses me a lot. Forza always came out like clockwork and now they had three years. It is kind of disapointing, because a release looks far away. All the other interesting games look not much closer either.

Stalker 2 was a great surprise and I can't wait for it! But if they won't show a proper roadmap for their games, they will not receive a preorder from me. And I preordered theOne after the Kindect dilemma.

That's not how that works.

When you are a development company with NDAs, you will absolutely get versions of new software. How else do you think they test it? It's not going to be available to the public until 2021, but you can bet that NT has a version of UE5.

This may be true, but they are telling you that the trailer was not made with it and did not run on it. i never said they wouldn't get early versions, but an early version was not used for the trailer according to them. So UE5 does not explain why it looks so good, unless there was a failure in communication on their end.

Microsoft even said it's being developed on UE5 on their Wired blog, but some people keep spreading this fake news.

They never said there would be no exclusives forever. They said the games coming out the first two years will be released on both. Most of the games are about 2 years in development so will likely come out in 3 years. The recent statement has been that they aren't going to make a game exclusive just to sell new consoles, the quote was something along the lines of not making things exclusive because they want people to buy their new console at a certain time (i.e. right away). Which means if a game could work on Xbox One they aren't going to block it just because they want to sell more Xboxes. They also said that they let developers decide if they want to support Xbox One.

EVERY game they release will be on PC and their console. They have been killing it on Steam you think they are going to lose Money? Im just waiting for the inevitable, and it will happen, when MS games are on everything. They should just be a publisher anyway they have a nice stable but those costs and hanging their lives out there for a service is gambling big time.

I think you quoted the wrong person.

I suspect that's part of the reason for the whole cross-gen philosophy for first party games. There just won't be that many of them in the first couple of years and this approach dresses that up as a 'positive'. Third party are free to do whatever, so they'll be lots of actual next-gen only exclusives, 'Medium' being a prime example.

It's games like that and the 'Crossfire' campaign that will carry the series X for the short term, that game looks like a graphics powerhouse.

For me it's mostly about third-party games anyway. Exclusives are such a small percentage of games that whichever console is better for third-party will get my bucks.

They have Microsoft money backing them and I'm aware of Stalker's history.

GSC are a shell of the OG Stalker team most are at 4A who do the Metro series. Also $$$$ doesnt mean anything, enviromental artist are a dime a dozen its gameplay and story that gaming needs to thrive.

Turns out cross-gen was an excuse because they have basically nothing for the next two years.
Every Series X exclusive there looked barely started.

Im want to see what the complete list PS5 launch a titles are. As of now Xsex is a 3rd party box for at least 2 years

Microsoft:
  • Generation exclusives suck and hurt the industry
Also Microsoft:
  • Games X Y and Z are timed exclusives in the Xbox Series X

Ya I'm pissed you were wrong.

I really don't see these games coming out 2023. I see EverWild as late 2021 or Spring 2022 (within the two year promise).

Phil did us dirty.
That's what he does and is why no one should listen to that mouth piece

They can't pick a direction. Trying to have the best of all worlds and failing on all cylinders.

If they really want to go so all-in on Gamepass and GaaS, why not just go ALL-IN on it and stop pretending to still be a traditional console maker too.

I would love it if they dropped this gen like an anvil and started over. If they're not, that's fine, just pick a strategy and run with it already. They seem aimless, and even insulting to the intelligence of their own fanbase.
