Wow, you're issue sounds exactly like the one I had about 4 years ago... except I didn't stay there and I had them "fix" it like 3-4 times. I finally took them to court and that was a really bullshit experience. I got out of there with as soon as my year was up.

My ceiling ended up collapsing once.... maybe twice? Thank god I was never in there when it happened, however I did take showers with the quicknessss. (especially since there was rarely any hot water)

It doesn't happen to be Hayco Managament does it?

I have pictures somewhere mushrooms growing out of my ceiling.
Found Them:

The weird crop is cause I needed the dates for court. You can see in one of the pics there's a black trash bag near the pipe, before I even moved in that was someone's solution... I had 3 different supers within that year cause their job was such a nightmare.

That's not wiring stick out...is it?

Oh god it's not oh god oh god oh god

Health and wellness industry. Lol.

Nobody needs to know what my private life is like, bruh.

Who would have thought that living in a filthy house might lead to heath issues. OP are you a time traveller from the European middle ages?

I live in a house built in 1984 and shit like this worries me. We have had leaks that I know has caused water absorption around the inside of my chimney and bathroom. Siding and any fixes needed for consequential damages is so flipping expensive though.

Homeownership sucks.

Question: is there a way to measure how much mold is in the air, if at all?

Your dad called me and told me to say, " Tell my dumbass son to get his head out of his ass."

You're welcome.

Yeah OP, your kinda dumb for just letting it go like that for years sorry.

You not only let a simple problem persist simply cause your lazy and expected the crew whos job it is to fix it to be lazy too but now it turned into a full health hazard.

Not to mention your paying for this place, its your full right to complain about problems that should be fixed by trained staff. Yet you didn't. I want to just mind my business too and not be bothered/bother anyone but fuck if my apartment is falling apart you better be sure im complaining about it if I'm paying.

How do you differentiate between black mold and the kinds that don't kill? I have some moldy looking spots on my shower curtain and I'm hoping it's just mildew and not black mold. Thankfully so far it's only ever been on the shower curtains and not on the walls and tub.

Guys go and buy some five dollar mold spray. Then you don't have to worry about whether it is black mold or not you just nuke it when it pops ip

Mold from water isn't going to kill you. Call code compliance in your local jurisdiction. The landlord will have to fix it, but they will probably retaliate if they are a slumlord. Be ready to get evicted or not have your lease renewed; study up on landlord/tenant rights.

Don't they condemn buildings of this stuff gets bad?

It depends on how bad it is. If the mold is from a leak between floors, then it needs to be checked out - at the very least to resolve the plumbing problem. In this case, depending on how bad it is, the walls for the bathroom may need to be stripped out if this has been going on for several years. OP mentioned plaster and wood falling from their bathroom ceiling before the first 'patch' job, so I'd reckon things are probably much worse than what can be physically seen from inside of the room at the moment.

Usually upstairs floods are the culprit when it comes to condemnations - overflowing toilets, busted sinks or showers, ect. People will take the time to treat the carpet, but the water will usually have enough time to sink into the floorboards and down the walls of the unit below. This in-turn can cause wood-rot and fuck up the wiring in the walls in addition to incubating mold. In the OP's instance, it sounds like there's either a crack in their neighbor's tub/shower-tile or there's something wrong with the pipes. Likely the latter.

"Black mold" is one of the most common excuses used to try to get out of an apartment lease. Black mold is not lethal, but mold in general can aggravate allergies/asthma. Generally speaking, mold shows up in apartment bathrooms with poor ventilation. When you shower you need to turn on the air vent, or if there is no vent you have to open the window. If you do not do these things, "black mold" will show up.

In your case, it sounds like the moisture from the leak upstairs (another common report) will cause the molding. Report it to your city's Building & Compliance department and have them show up. They'll cite the landlord.

The one thing I could even deal with is a leaking roof. They would have had to fix that for me.

There's another thing all of you guys have overlooked. Rent!

I look at it like this: if you're a pain in the ass tenant that bitches, moans, complains and nags, then what are you gonna do as the management company in charge? Not only take longer to fix the problem but more importantly -- jack that mother fuckers rent up!!! Don't like the apartment? No problem, this is New York baby and there's dozens if not hundreds of others lining up waiting for a vacancy.

Health and safety is one thing but at the end of the day I'm just tryin to save a few dollars any way I can get it. Of course, exploding bloater syndrome ain't the way I'm trying to go out, either.

Do landlords just hope that people who live in these places can't afford lawyers? How the hell do they get away with bringing some maintenence guy from off the streets in for work?

This is just asking for some respiratory problems.

Not sure how this situation works. Where do you bring your tinder hookups? Or don't they shower? Guess you like that yeast as well.

wow, forget the mold business, I can think everything else about the OP is more remarkable, and utterly depressing...

EDIT: Hooooly shit, looking at OP's other threads...

Move out.

Mold doesn't go away if you just paint over it. Especially if water damage is involved it's very likely it'll come back.

After having spend far too much time (aka any time) reading several of your threads, I got to give props to your father at least he admits when he fucks up.

More importantly please sue the landlord, then come and make a post about it, we all want to hear how much he deserves to get beaten for not having fixed something that took you several years to report.

P.S. Flawless use of tags.
