Why didnt people like Tech Romancer

I want honest opinions. Im sure some of you will make up general shit to get yer kicks in, but what are the real reasons you didnt like it.

Cause I played it for the 4 billionth time tonight, and the combat is pretty fucking tight for a robot game, and there arent many good robot games out there. Why couldnt tech romancer get a place on yer shelf?

Fun game, but lacks subtlety in control that other, more serious one-on-one fighting games afford the player. Then again, how can you really expect to finesse controls with those big, city-nuking robots.

They're pretty fast. Yeah I agree it'd never be tournament play style fighting action, but in terms of mechanics it ranked up there with powerstone, honestly.

Each robot got special item attacks on TOP of all their normal specials, plus a cool hero mode, the story mode was so polished too. And if you play on full stars the AI can get pretty frisky, tho the last boss on full stars makes me wanna die. I mean the patterns are easy to avoid, but when its missing all the pauses (that make for good openings) lower difficulties give its a deadly thing.

Im currently digging Dixon cause im on a gundam kick, but Wiseduck is looking awesome all over again. I love when ya spear them with that big spike and just BAM BAM BAM

Oh, it's a bad-ass, almost overly well-produced package on the DC...I agree. Certainly, if they re-released it with a four-player mode, or even more than that with an eight-player online mode...OMG. Capcom really did sit on this title, though. It had a lot of the charm of Geppy-X, with that 70s/80s Japanese afternoon show appeal, and had fucking MAZINGER-dude's trademark robo-design for chrisakes!

The dreamcast version was quite a package. Had so many extras n secrets, and story mode, and vmu and omg omg.

Blodia II in it rox so much, I need to unlock him again.

Well against AI there shouldnt be any major issues. Blodia II was unlockable, I know there was another unlockable mech too. Forget who it was. I lost my old save so im working through it again.

Twinzam is definately one of the best characters in the game, but ive had a lot of luck with other characters too. Really depends on my mood. Really its Twinzam, he's fuckin cheap haha. Still, that's ok Ill just become better! Its hard to find competition tho. Im gonna force Drinky Crow to play it so I have someone to fight but ive been practicing so not very fair.

RS: Just go to a Game Crazy and pick it up used for, like, under $20. At least, there was one at that price here in Tempe. Or...the internets.

I love the explosions in that game, though. BOOOOOOOOOOM!

I liked Bloodia...the one with that dude who's in MvsC2...Jin or something. Did TR have that board-game mode? Or was that Project Justice 2?

Thats project justice. Tho the character select screen looked sorta boardgame-ish.

Yeah thats the same. Jin pilots blodia II in TR and uses it in MvC2.

I think Shadow Dixon was the other mech, piloted by Red Shadow.

Anyway, this was an awesome game and I liked it better then most of the other fighting games on DC. Only Capcom vs. SNK 2, Garou and Third Strike beat it out IMO. Even Soul Calibur couldn't compete but that's a whole other convoluted story. Would love to see a revival on PS3 or any other next gen system.

I got this upon release and had an absolute blast with it. All the anime cliches were in full effect here.

It's hardly the most in-depth fighter, but it's rather simple to get the hang of and it has some of the best moments in gaming for me. Just look at the Magical Girl's mech... Bolon was it? The finisher move it does, having tea in her dollhouse and then smacking you around with the table because she feels insulted or something?

Insane.

Not to mention her story-mode ending.

I was partial to the Valkyrie type mech for obvious reasons as Macross is a favorite of mine.

In short, Tech Romancer is pure, distilled giant-mecha-robot-fanboy-service in all of it's glory.

Too bad there I have heard nothing of a sequel... T.R. is just another one of the reasons I am glad to have owned (And still own) a DC.

PJ2 is my 2nd favorite fighter...where is a 3rd one for say the PSP??

I liked the game, but my friends didn't. So, I unlocked everything, and never played it again. My guess is the whole 2D mech thing doesn't jive with many people.

*shrugs*

More TR love? Fine with me, been playing the game for a few weeks (been a few too unfortunately) and I love the combat. It's quite different than what I'm used to, yeah I know, the big clunky mech thing :p, but I love it. I need to get some batteries for my VMU's, need more money to unlock all the other stuff hehe.

So far I've finished the game with Junpei, Nakato & Halma, Simon, Sora & Daichi and Shadow Red. Not all storylines though, but I'll get to it sooner or later.

I thought it was great. Just because a game doesn't sell well makes it a bad game. You have to get the Sony mentality out of your head.

It just got lost in the sea of amazing fighting games for the Dreamcast (Powerstone 1 & 2, Street Fighter III, Soul Calibur, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, UFC, Last Blade 2, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Project Justice, etc.).

If someone can find me a mint unsealed copy of Tech Romancer, I'll gladly give them a fair price for it. Then I'll join your TR Army, MAF.

Pretty much. Plus many hardcore gamers I think had a problem with a fighting game with robots (yeah, fucktards, I know).

But also as noted, I couldn't gel with the game due to control issues.

One of my favorite dreamcast games. A love letter to the mecha genre, and not in that sick, dead-rat-in-a-box Hideako Anno way.
