Why do people back into parking spaces?

This is something I've never understood. Occasionally, you'll run across someone who is going out of their way to back into a parking space. It's not like you save yourself any trouble. The way I look at it, you either have to back into a spot or back out of it. Backing out is much easier though. So, what possible reason could someone have to do it? Is it a pride thing? Are these people bank robbers? Why?!

It's just easier getting out. But I don't back into parking spaces; I'll either look for one that I can drive through (ie there's no car in the a parking spot and the parking spot in front of it), and if not, I just park regularly.

I don't ever do that, going in reverse scares me to death. Its like I don't have control when I'm in reverse, I feel like I won't stop in time if something does happen...

Well, look at it as getting the backing-out part out of the way first. Plus, it quicker and safer to pull out of a spot you've backed into.

Who backs your car out for you then?

Actually you save yourself ALOT of trouble.... it takes a split second for someone to come out of no where when your head is turned in one direction and you not see them and back in to them. It happens all the time, especially in a crowded parking lot and/or with tall vehicles around you. By backing in you have a better view of the parking lot as you are pulling out.

Exactly.

But I never do it because I suck at backing in.

I do it, but its rarely smooth. I always park away from the other cars when I can, I don't get why people like parking all close and bunched up.

Hmm, I guess I can understand this. It's never something I would do (I'm more of a "cross that bridge when I get there" type of person) but I can see how it could be beneficial.

Maybe my days of viewing backer-inners as elitist car assholes has come to an end. At least I still have the sit-at-the-red-light dumbshits to inflict my rage upon. ;)

Because people seem to have this stupid need to park as absolutely close to a building as possible, even if it involves getting in half a parking spot and re-maneuvering their car for 20 minutes to do so. Frankly, I just park in the back at most places, away from the bottlenecking and door-scratching insanity and just write it off as that much extra exercise. Life will go on if you have to walk a few extra feet, people.

One time when I had just recently gotten my driver's license, I was driving in the parking lot of a pizza place, and had a slight accident. I drove into a parking space like usual, not really looking at what was on the ground. Everything was fine till then, and I went in to get the pizzas. When I came out, I saw the car across from me was gone, so I figured it would be nice and easy to just drive straight out. Unfortunately, what I had failed to see earlier was the concrete blocks between the spaces. I was just horrified as I feel this massive jolt underneath the car, and realize my error. Having to choose between backing back over it, or just following through with it, I chose to just drive straight on through and drive away, hoping nobody had noticed. There were never any problems with the car, so hopefully it didn't do too much damage.

Sometimes you have to.
Especially if you're in an Asian mall.

Example scenario:
You're looking for a spot in a crowded parking lot. A car behind you just left - you have to reverse back to that spot and quickly back in, since there are other cars waiting behind. Stuff like that.

Normally, I just park regularly - but if I have the time and in the mood, I'll back in. It's just the 'getting it out of the way' reason. It's nice being able to just start your car and zip out of a parking space.

It is typically easier to back out of traffic than to back into traffic. That's the way I look at it. I also try to park my car away from the mouth breathing heathens that will undoubtedly put door dings in it.

Also it looks cooler when you come back to your car. Just sayin'.

Heh, I think we've all done that one not long after getting our license. Unfortunately, I did it in front of about 90% of my high school. It sounded as though I blew all my tires when I did it, but thankfully I just came out of it with another embarassment on my social resume.

You're a weaksauce if you can't back into a parking spot. I do it everyday when I go to work. When I get off of work I just want to leave. I don't want to spend the extra time and effort to back out.

I hate it when it happens, because when others do it at work, you have a line of other cars waiting for the guy to finish backing into his parking space. It doesn't make sense to me, because you're supposed to be in a hurry going to work, but when you leave, you can afford to spend the extra seconds. And besides, backing out is faster and smoother than backing in. Just my opinion.

I drive a relatively long and wide car, so there isn't a chance in hell I'm going to back into a space unless absolutely positively necessary. I'm just not that confident. If I had a smaller car, I'd be more comfortable, but for the time being, I can handle backing out of a spot perfectly fine.

technically its much quicker and simpler to park in reverse than going forwards.

Your car can turn much more quickly, and almost pivots on its rear wheels, allowing you to quickly get 90 degrees on and park.

Parking forwards means you turn slower, so you need several goes, or a much wider road to turn from.

For me, the secret to good reverse parking is to park close to the side you are driving (right side for me). You can more easily monitor your rear drivers side as you reverse, keeping that close to the next car, and therefore worry less about the bit further away from you. Then once you are in, you can give it a little jiggle if necessary (pull out and back in again) to even out the space.

Reverse parking for me is no prob, but I don't like parallel parking ever since getting low profile tyres and expensive alloys (I park at least a foot away from the kerb)

First thing I noticed in Japan. Get off plane, go to parking lot, every single car backed in. It looked weird. I asked the guy driving why do you always back in? Points to other cars because they did.

I prefer to back in and usually park where there are not many cars near me either the back of the lot or at the ends of a column. Sorta get paranoid that some idiot would park to close to my car and either damage the car doors or make it difficult to actually get in my car.
