Why do people hate Cam Newton?

To the degree they do now? Horseshit. The perception and image of Tom Brady and Bill Belichek changed big time after Spygate and Deflategate.

The constant comparisons to Brady and worse, Manziel, are simply making the point. To be on an even level in terms of how guys are viewed and what kind of image they have, a white QB can be an insufferable prick with a drinking problem who may or may not have cheated on multiple occasions....a black QB can be a model citizen who does a lot of charity and is constantly smiling and who dances after touchdowns. These two are on the same level. Both worthy of being hated. But nah, race isn't a factor.

Brady has been despised throughout his career by most fans outside of New England. But just to clarify, if you think Brady is a cheater and that's why you do (or don't) hate him, then you haven't been paying attention (NYT: True Scandal of Deflategate Lies in the N.F.L.’s Behavior).

Brady hate gets justified for a few reasons, but most of them are because he's the most celebrated quarterback for one of the most successful franchises in the last 15 years. Everything else, that he's a whiner or made up stories from the NFL or that he divorced Bridget Moynihan to marry a super model, or what have you, are manifestations of his success. Philip Rivers cries when he doesn't get a call, Matthew Stafford does, Tyrod Taylor, etc., etc., but nobody really cares because those guys are consistently winning. Similarly, Newton has celebrated after every touchdown and every big play in NFL since he started, but he's gotten a lot more negative attention this year because he's the best player on the best team in the NFL and an MVP shoe-in. So now his celebrations are that much more on display, he's the guy the cameras show for reactions, he's the guy on every commercial for the NFL, before every break, etc.

But comparisons to Manziel? Manziel is hated throughout the league by fans, coaches, and players... If you're looking at hate:praise ratio, Manziel has no praise and he doesn't deserve any either. Kid is a punk who's going to be run out of the league soon. I don't really see how him and Newton are comparable.

the only thing excessive about Matt Stafford is his post-game meal

This kind of fat shaming is worse than racism!

Eh I'd say that it is. RG3 is seen as "one of the good ones" by some people. Where as Cam is in your face, brash and plays by his own rules. And people don't like to see a successful black man do that. They want them to be quiet, meek, tamed etc

Like why did people hate TO and Randy Moss and love receiver like Jerry Rice?

To be clear, I'm not saying this to down RG3 or JR etc. I have no problem with them

RG3 is a hilarious example to cite. He's loathed by his team and by the fanbase, who preferred Kirk Cousins. RG3 has been called among other things arrogant, dumb, uncoachable, and uppity. Do the math.

There is a distinctive difference between an excessive celebration and a normal celebration, guess who did the excessive one.

lmao give me a fuckin break. It's the same shit. Just because one dance lasts 3-5 seconds longer all of a sudden it's excessive? Why? So that it can fit a narrative about one person being out of line and the other not? There is also a distinct difference between a touchdown and a sack, once puts points on the board and the other doesn't, so since we are assigning weight to dances based on time, a TD dance has every right to be a little longer than a sack dance.

Not that this undoes your point, but Newton is the #5 jersey and Watt is #9.

http://www.nflshop.com/pages/Top_Selling_Jerseys

1. Brady
2. Beckham Jr
3. Gronk
4. Rodgers
5. Cam
6. Keuchly
7. Dez
8. Wilson
9. Watt
10. Antonio Brown

When NFL posts their updated numbers I'd imagine Cam will be #1 or maybe behind Brady, but probably not.

Still Watt is obviously super well known, hell he's on track to be the greatest defensive player in NFL history. For what it's worth though, Watt gets a lot of criticism for his rehearsed, choreographed stupid garbage. I can't stand Watt, especially after Hard Knocks this season. But it's also normal for more people to love and hate a quarterback than a defensive player, especially when it's a QB on a 15-1, best team in the NFL. Brady is the #1 jersey seller, but he's likely the most hated player by fans in the NFL too.

Kuechly at 6? that's good.....that's damn good

Between him and my sister, I'm starting to hate the color yellow..

that's gold breh

Who honestly gives shit. Cam can do as he pleases as far as celebrations go. If anyone has an issue with it. Stop him from scoring then.

drummed up media narrative , portray white athletes one way , black ones another and watch people go nuts trying to prove their point. Nothing about the Carolina Panthers encompasses the idea, or image, or concept of "everyone" . People who watch a lot of football like talking about whatever narrative is given them. But im glad quite a few people haved called this what it is, bullshit. In the end its a game, Cam has become great at his job, and he does his job on the field , period. Where was this when it was McNabb vs Brady , or Wilson vs Manning. The he's cocky line is bullshit, TO is cocky , Cam is a saint.

How can you not despise someone with such awful fashion sense?

I still want him to win, so the Panthers can send PeyPey to the glue factory

Cam Newton seems to have a growing group of people that strongly dislike him. From my observation, they do not like that he celebrates touchdowns or somethin? I guess he has a thing where he dances after a touchdown and gives the ball to a kid in the crowd. I've also heard people think he's trying to promite his brand or something during the game. But I've seen tons of players celebrate similarly with no issue. Are people just playing the "the quarterback must be a serious player" card just because he's black? I don't know if the sports media is overblowing this, but it felt like people were acting so concerned over nothing.

Why do people hate Serena Williams?

The people who hate Tom Brady do so, in part, because he has been linked to cheating twice in his career, spy gate and deflate gate. That is what hurts his perception as a player. Cam has been nothing but a model citizen since he stepped foot in the NFL.

They hate Tom because he dominates. Deflate gate was a joke that the media needed to fuck around with while they waited for these guys to come back and bash each others heads in. Brady can be a baby on the field at times, but people hate him because he's good looking, makes a ton of money, and QBs the most dominate team (almost a decade and a half now). People love to hate, the cheating is some shit they throw around to fuck with Pats fans.

Edit: Why do folks hate Lebron?

i agree that deflategate was a joke, but not everyone does, and to some people it affected the way they look at him. Same with spygate.

people hate lebron because he's not a killer like Kobe or Jordan. The hate stems from the perception of him not being the beast that he maybe could've been. What I mean by that is yes he's one of the all time greats, but he'll never be THE greatest

I've come to like Cam, but he showboats a little too much. It's acceptable now because he's dominating and you can't knock a winner, but I wish he would dial it down a notch.

"You're a fucking great player, just not the greatest, so go fuck off!"

THE DECISION certainly didn't help matters.

Recording from the wrong spot is a big deal.

You got the tapes bro! Lets have a look, oh wait, we can't, they destroyed them!

Edit: And yes, it's certainly a bit more serious than fucking deflate gate which was absolutely nothing. Where's Jabee?

The one that got in his face did gave a shit aparently, as well as people who dislike him as well, so,.. I guess Cam can do as he pleases, but dont complain when fans Hate him for it

LOL at dances right based on duration...

It is not just about lenght, in the Pats - Seahawk SB Baldwin did an excesive celebration after a TD, and it was shorter than Cams dance. Was it funny? Yes, but some on field antics are just pure disrespect to the team you are playing against, and Im not surprise some players will easily tale more issue on Cams celebration than Avery celebration.

Yup all this. His arrogant, flippant attitude combined with stratospheric ego doesn't come in to it at all.
Its that, his blackness and hip hop vibe exacerbating the dislike. If he was white, hed have some haters, but more would be willing to accept him as a guy just out having fun.

Hate comes with having game. Having a great player. Cam can just welcome himself to world of Peyton, Rodgers and Brady. I think Broncos fans are more used to the Peyton hate by now than Panthers fans.

people hate LeBron because they mad

LeBron taking himself out of a play because of call begging is the fucking worst though... and always trying to find the camera

I don't watch a lot of basketball, but I love me some LeBron

I think it boils down to him being a young, non subservient, Black male who is dominating a sport on and off the field without getting or needing approval from the "older generation". He's non apologetic and smiling in the face of people who want to see him fail for not "playing the right way."

Tom Brady is hated because he is the leader of a team full of cheats.

The Patriots and Brady are a disgrace to the game.

People focus on Cam Newton's celebrations and boastfulness because he is black.

Aaron Rodgers does the same smiling, taunting, cocky thing every Sunday and no one cares. He's just out there playing a children's game ala Brett Favre.

And as mentioned repeatedly, most NFL fans loathe the fuck out of Brady, Cam has a long way to go.

Brady absolutely deserves the loathing more than Cam Newton.

Cam is a fun player to watch. He is made huge steps forward this season too.

It was all a big cover up. Roger didn't want to punish the Pats so he destroyed the evidence.

Luckily the Pats got away Scott-free.

He has that smug smile whenever they're winning, and then has the biggest sad little baby face when things don't go their way. He just seems super childish.

And what's with the towel? Why?

Fuck Auburn and fuck Cam.

SEC blood runs deep within me. That's all really. Oh, and the other controversies that happened whilst in college.

don't get it twisted - Aaron is a smug piece of shit, but he does it on the down low

and obviously people care because you point it out every Sunday!

besides, wouldn't you be smiling if you were at the only place in the world where you could hide from your hellspawn girlfriend?

Because he's a great player on a team they don't primarily root for? Honestly I think the Cam Newton hate is a bit overblown at this point. There will always be a contingent of fans from SEC country (read: Florida) who won't forgive his transgressions in college, but besides that he's pretty well liked. He knows that the attitude and celebrations will rub some people the wrong way, but he doesn't care, and doesn't want to distil his real personality for the cameras like a lot of top level athletes. As long as he keeps winning, people won't care.

American hate great team based athletes in general.

Why?

Because there's less than a 5 percent chance he plays for your favorite team.

Fans just hate their enemies specially if you're good. They look for thing to hate. The better you get the more your hate.

Brady got hate way before the cheating scandel. (That just made it worse)

Lebron got hate way before the decision (that just made it worse)

Bryce Harper is the most hated player in baseball.

Newton is currently the best player in football. He should win the MVP this year. The hate will continue to come.

Unless you fake modesty like the Kevin Durants and the Peyton Mannings of the world, embrace it. It's what makes great players greater.

Smokey pls

I hated when he combined the gloating with being a pouty bitch - same as Tom Brady, Edelman, that piece of shit Brad Jones, and every receiver who holds the ball out in front of themselves and drops it after a first down and flag begs on every other play

lots of maturation, but winning makes a lot of things easy!

you know i aint lying greg

Bryce Harper is not hated because he's great. Mike Trout is as good or better and gets very little hate. He's hated because common perception of him is that he's cocky and entitled, whether true or not, but lets not act like it's just because he's great that people dislike him.

Jeter got a lot of hate from non Yanquis fans.

They hate us cuz they anus

Of course you can find some people (especially the diehard fanatics) that hate anything and anyone. But you have to be crazy to not think that, as far as athletes go, Derek Jeter's public image was fucking teflon. The guy did no wrong.

Just saying there's a contingent of people who hate everyone.

Cams is just more publicized.

If he wins, it will go away and they will move to someone else. And manning will continue to be untouched.

this fit prolly cost two thousand dollars plus all told, but this man can't utilize a 8 dollar bottle of cocoa butter for them ankles.

Saying it's because he's black is missing the mark. There are PLENTY of athletes, both black and white, who are hated because they give off an aura of perceived cockiness and arrogance. Some people don't like Cam for the same reason they didn't (don't) like Johnny Manziel. There is a fine line between being perceived as confident or arrogant. Cam is pretty smug and goes beyond the typical display of confidence present in many famous athletes, thus he is singled out.

Personally I'm torn. Some things he does seems to go to far, but at the same time, meh it's not really a big deal.
