Why do you guys give a foozle about console loyalty?

I only dislike polarized console loyalty. Anyone who happens to like Nintendo because they grew up enjoying every Nintendo game they played, but doesn't really find anything of warrant on the PS2 or Xbox isn't really a console loyalist in the negative sense, IMO.

I buy what I find fun. If this means I love the Gamecube and hate the Xbox, so be it.

Console loyalty is for idiots.

Why do you give a shit about me giving a shit about you giving a shit about people giving a shit about cosole loyalty?

Because people argue/derail/troll legitimate threads based upon love of a piece of hardware? (or I think he wants people to tear themselves to pieces defending this hardware. which is not neccesarily a bad thing)

first off, everyone has a preference, even if it's slight. Some people have the means and time to own every system out there and look past the brands. Others want to put all their eggs in one basket, so to speak, so, naturally, they'd want for all the best things to come out for their console and they'd want it to sell the best, so their purchase is made worthwhile and they aren't "forced" to buy the competition. This is taken to such an extreme level in many cases that peoples' views become warped and skewed unfairly towards their console of choice.

The way I see it most of us just love games and consoles, but what turns us against each other are those gaming extremist, the ones who haven't found atleast 1 Xbox 360 game or feature to like. The ones that didn't get a little excited over the Nintendo controller, the ones that hate Sony for leading the market. Any man can get caught up in this war. When you see some geek troll insulting stuff in every thread, it's make you a bit crazy.

Um..... I don't?

I've been a Sony supporter fore the PSP, the PS2 and the PS1 (mostly for the same reason) but I am 100% ready to jump ship if they mess up the next gen*. Oh, and I've always been a multi-console owner, too.

* I think they might. They've at very least lost the edge that used to make them exciting to me.

I only had an N64 last gen and only a Gamecube this gen for two reasons. Time and money. During the N64 era it was soley money that was a problem. For the GC era it is a combination of the two, though money has become less of a problem and time is now the bitch. Next gen will probably see money even less of a problem and time wont be as much a problem as it is now, so that's why I plan to get a PS3 and Rev (x360 is redundant for my needs).

For me it isn't so much about loyalty, than it is about circumstance. I could only choose one, and Nintendo offered the best for what i wanted each time.

Fanboys are beneath contempt. Imagine if some of you took your same blinkered approach to video games and did the same for music or movies and you forced yourself to only support the product of certain labels or studios. It's sad the amount of good and interesting stuff you're making yourself miss out on.

I don't understand what some people want out of this hobby. I want to be entertained. A pleasant diversion from the real problems in life. I want to enjoy video games and enjoy my free time, not fill my head up with all of these pre-existing conditions on what I will and will not enjoy. I am astonished on a daily basis at how many people just suck at this hobby.

I fight for the one console future. There should be only one, and that one should advance the cause of videogames over gimmicks and quality of games over masturbations about profit.

I end up buying all the consoles eventually, who cares. I pick one console and buy it at launch and wait until the others drop in price and buy them too.

I admit that a one console future would tone down the fanboy quarrels. But then, they'd find other things to fight over. Such is human nature.

The NES is the closest thing to a one-console reality we've ever had, and that's probably why it's the greatest console of them all.

All the games on one system? Sega, Capcom, Namco, Nintendo, Sony, Square, Bungie, and Rockstar - all without having to pay 1000 for three different consoles? Surely there would be ramifications to having such a reality!

one console future simply wont happen. at least not with how the industry is structured now.

Personally, what it comes down to with me is the controller. For me the Xbox S blows the dual shock away and seeing how its looking like sonys gonna use dual shock again and the xbox 360 controller is so awesome theyve got me right there. The main thing I hate about the dual shock is the d-pad and left analog stick position. If they switched it, it would be so much better.

Dude, I asked this question just a few weeks ago and got nothing. I don't get it either. I assume it has to do with the investment into the console manufacturer you've made, so you want it be as successful as possible to justify your purchase. However, this doesn't seem in line with some of the rabid fanboyism I've seen.

So yeah, this doesn't really answer your question.

A lot of it (not on GAF, but many other places) seems to come down to people being confused about what the first party companies actually do. I hear a lot of stuff like, "I like Playstation because they make Metal Gear/Final Fantasy/Madden/whatever." It's almost always a third party title, but it's just associated with that platform. So people enjoy those games and associate the company that manufactures the hardware with that experience instead of crediting the third party developer who actually made the game. I think we'd be pretty shocked at how many people buy Playstations primarily because they assume the same games they liked on the previous iteration of the system will automatically appear on the next. See also: People freaking out when previously exclusive games pop up on competitors' systems (MGS2, GTA, etc.).

I think the whole thing is patently ridiculous and essentially is only useful as a way to tell who's an idiot on any given board. I like good games, and I couldn't care less what system they're on. I prefer to buy the best version available of multiplatform games, which does usually mean the Xbox version, but that's not always the case. MGS2:S comes to mind as an example. I do have some issues with certain companies. I don't particularly like Sony and the way they've treated consumers in regards to faulty designs in all of their systems, but I refuse to let that get in the way of a great game experience. As much as I hope Microsoft or Nintendo are successful in making headway against Sony next gen, I freely admit that my current pick for GotY 2005 is a Sony game on a Sony platform (SotC). It's all about the games, and company lines really shouldn't enter into it.

I'm too cheap to be a multi-console owner (and at times too poor), so I have probably developed my bias because of this. That's not to say I don't see games I would enjoy on the other consoles, though. Oh well.

"Honestly now, can anyone give me a good answer?"

it goes back to playground style attitudes of "being on the winning side"

"AH HA! I MADE THE RIGHT CONSOLE CHOICE! GOLD STAR FOR ME! LOOK AT HOW MUCH BETTER THAN YOU I AM!"

See, for some of us it's not as much console "loyalty" as it is hatred of other companies. Sony and MS have always been the two major companies I'd rather not give my money too... then they managed to enter the game market.

Nintendo makes Mario. Thus, I buy Nintendo stuff.

Sony is the kid with the case full of trophies. His dad coaches the kickball team. He isn't just chosen first. He's the captain who gets to pick the first kid.

Xbox is the kid held back a few years. The only one on the playground with pubic hair. Not a lot of smarts, but brings the power.

Gamecube is the creepy kid left unpicked at the end. Since there are an odd number of players on the ground, he's designated score keeper. He's content stuck with this job, as he's playing an entirely different game inside his warped mind.

I don't have console loyalty. I don't see the point in it tbh

I like all three, each one has their own strengths and fair share of exclusives/killer apps.
