Why do YOU play video games?

Well, aside from raw entertainment value and arbitrary personal taste in form of entertainment...

It's actually a bit hard for me to justify videogames over books, as I happen to feel reading (good books, that is) is as or more intellectually stimulating and "healthy" than most videogaming. But for me, books require a certain kind of investment in uninteruped concentration that causes time management issues. I find even complex games easier to pick up and play in short bursts.

I have so little time to waste, I sure don't play videogames as time wasters. I suppose aside from entertainment, I make so much time for games because I'm really intrigued by the interactive format of them, and enjoy exploring the world they create; even simple shooters. I also enjoy seeing from a design and artistic sense, what the artists in the form of programmers, designers, illustrators, etc, have created.

I play out of habit now, I guess.
I got into gaming when I was about 7 (1982) because it looked cool. The challenge and technology really interested me. Tactile input with visual feedback. I've stuck with the "fad" ever since. It's a mix of escapism and entertainment for me now, as well as challenge every now and then.

im about the same, although now ive gotten into import games so its part habit part wierd hobby.

if specific games as examples were good reasons, Dynasty Warriors, espgaluda, ZoE2, Tales of ____, and Super Robot Wars would be my reasons for playing games.

Originally I played games because I didn't have any siblings, when you're young reading books isn't as apealing a past time as it is to someone who is much older. Watching TV wasn't nearly as exciting to me because I only cared for cartoons. I had a Nintendo when I was younger, but really I was a PC guy, as I'm sure most of us started out that way. Nothing beat the excitment of playing Leisure Suit Larry.

When the SNES came out I started becoming more interested in consoles, but at least to my parents at the time it was still somethign to be 'frowned' upon. Better to be outside and play. However, my casual gaming turned into an obsession the first time I booted up Final Fantasy VI There had never been anything like it for me. I mean wtf, characters that you CARED about. I mean we're talking about a day and age where "story" was a fucking text.info file most of the time, or a shitty 4 page manual. Here you had numerours characters all with depth to them. It was, wow. It was good. I used to pretend to be sick just to stay home from school. It always bugged me because when I tried to explain this to people they looked at my life I was crazy. It was still a time when games were "kiddie" people didn't understand that it didn't have to BE that way.

I think I play games because in the end, if done correctly, it can be an experience unmatched on our planet. A type of involvement and immersian you cannot experience anywhere else with any other mode of entertainment.

I play games to experience things I couldn't in real life. Like fantasy settings.

Hmmmm, where is my UZI now, I need to stop by the mall.

I play games because I'm completely in love with my imagination. I'll play anything, but the ones that stick with me the most and hold my attention are the ones that allow my brain to exist seamlessly within the world while I'm playing.

I play video games first and formost so that i can interact with my enertainment. I find watching TV just so boring. If I'm not on the internet while the TV is on then I would rather be playing games. I'm usually doing something while I'm watching TV.
I would rather make my own entertainment than be a slave to what someone else though might be entertaining.

I also really enjoy seeing what the newest achievment is in the gaming world. Video game technology can sometimes advance at such incredible speeds. I am always excited about the "next" game I'm gonna play. It's really one of the only industrys where you are guaranteed that there will be something considerable new several times per year. I like that.

It's slightly more productive than watching TV. That and really I think it's mainly about espacism. I read a lot of non-fiction books, because I "feel" like I was there. Same thing with video games, I like to feel like I was there when the airship went to vector the first time. I was there searching in the lost woods. I was in the sniping battle with The End. As far as storytelling goes videogames is the new and exciting step.

platformers are like a simple mix of skill and puzzle for me which i find rewarding to beat (2d platformers). games like halo give me a buzz when I own a screaming 13 year old.

also as a boredom aversion, I can also play games when I'm braindead/hungover/stoned, can't read a book or go ride a bike in that state.

I grew up playing games. They helped me with hand-eye coordination. Gaming also kept me out of trouble during school when everyone was else was doing drugs. I used to game because I couldn't get laid. Now I can get laid so I don't play games much anymore. :lol

I also grew up playing games. My respect for them is very high and i see this media as a form of art.
I like to be amazed and some gameplay mechanic, designs, feelings of immersion, fun it gives when playing, interactivity in some virtual envirronement, etc.

I also love music, image and scenario. Videogames regroups all those interest into one. That's also why videogames is also my career.

I mainly play to do something that I can't do in real life.

Like in Final Fantasy, you can use magic. And there are other weird looking species.

So until some aliens come to earth and teach us how to use magic, i'm not quitting videogames :).

It also gives me the same rush as when I go hiking, skiing, etc. I can almost equate them to extreme sports, with the exception of actually doing it.

Started when I was young, been at it ever since,it's fun,it's an escape, and aside from sports,it's really the only form of entertainment I enjoy,I find TV/Movies to be overall boring.I laugh at my brother who blasts me for playin games alot, yet he watches TV for like 6 hours a day -_-

to experience adventure in 2nd hand experience. (sort of like a movie and a book - but VGs are better because they are more interactive.)

I've lived pretty stable life so far - and something out of ordinary (say, RE4, for good example) to satisfy my drama-king thurst. ;)
