Alot of goths are fat or the weird kids. My opinion only hot chicks should be goth, dudes not allowed. Maybe industrial should be the guy thing, goth the girl thing.

Late 70s-early/mid 80s goth, while very morose, was very cinematic and sophisticated... and I think that photo sort of captures that aura. It's dark, but it's sophisticated and chic. It's very Siouxsie.

I don't think post-punk is a meaningless term at all. Maybe today it is just a stupid buzzword, but back then it was simply a term for bands that were directly influenced by the first wave of punk but weren't taken by the punk mystique and mythos. Today it's used as a catch-all for bands that can't play their instruments but paid for a decent producer.
Anyway, a lot of post-punk bands had gothy elements, but it all came together for goth probably with Bauhaus, or maybe Siouxsie Sioux, although I'm not familiar with her, really.
What other classically-labelled post-punk bands would you consider goth?

And Joy Division definitely inspired goth, but I wouldn't consider them goth themselves. I think their black lyrics and imagery has more to do with Ian being nuts.
This is a pretty stupid thing to be arguing about actually. Arguing punk/goth/post-punk is just meaningless. There was a lot of great music in the late 70s and early 80s.
That's what's important.

Well, I don't see a "goth" and automatically judge him. But the goth people I know all generally act one way, and it's annoying...
They just go against what everyone else thinks to be different. And they like it that way. They don't actually think of themselves, they just go against what is "right" or mainstream. And that is annoying.

One thing I want to know is how come you never see average to tall goths wearing the big shoes? It's always the short-arses. There was this guy in my English tutorials who always wore them. The scary thing was they were about 6 inches thick and he still was shorter than me.

The few goths that I've met have been complete losers, so from my personal experience I don't like goths. As far as I can tell, they're mostly characterised by dressing stupidly and being depressed all the time. The best way to dress to be "individual" is just wearing whatever you feel comfortable in, not what makes you look like a weirdo.

Because most (not all) of them dress like clowns. Not regular clowns either, but clowns who lost every color but black and white. Seriously, add a few random colors to the overused makeup and they'd fit right into Barnum & Bailey.
Also because most (not all) of them think they're so dark and individual. I'm sorry, but no. Like every other group, they all look the same within their respective cliques. But goth has become so generically fused with punk now that they could be intermingled and many wouldn't be able to tell the difference. So goths have lost whatever individuality they've had on TWO levels. It's a joke. And dark? Yeah. I'll believe they're dark when I get out of my head the image of a few of them getting "so viciously upset like man" over one of the groups' guy's parents not getting him the brand of Gogurt that he liked on purpose and blaming it over the fact that they're trying to 'impose their values' on him.
Gogurt flavor X will force you to conform to the Man. They were serious about this.
So long as they don't start acting like these damnable chavs everyone's talking about, let 'em do their thing. Free amusement is always good. Though it sucks that they give a bad name to the few good goths out there.

I've actually started a goth thread in the past, the thing I hate is people saying "those aren't real goths"

goth chicks are hot. And in a related note I saw more goths than I've ever seen before in a 5minute time frame walking around Belfast city. Friday nights must b goth night.
