Why is everyone anti Bruce x Barbara? (Batman)

I still can't believe they're doing it again.

Is that Spider-Man animated movie gonna have Gwen fucking Green Goblin and getting pregnant? Who did I hurt to deserve this?

All they had to do was just cut out Barbara's part in this whole story. You literally can have the same story without her.

This movie really is the monkey's paw wish.

They're premiering 'The Killing Joke' tonight at SDCC in about ninety minutes, and following up with a panel discussion featuring cast and crew. I wonder how that's going to pan out..?

I like it because it's the most humanized depiction of the joker I've seen. It definitely is cruel, but hidden under all this is something I feel that people often miss: Batman us trying to save the Joker from his madness. And the joker is someone who wants to be saved. It's a rare depiction where he actually hates doing the monstrous things he does. The art work is pretty on point with this, because a lot of the time the Joker smiles, it never reaches his eyes. And his whole plan is a desperate attempt to just prove he's not alone in the world.

That said, I think Scott Snyder successfully improved on the origin story in his Zero Year event.

Hugs.

Zero Year is easily Snyder's best contribution to the Batman mythos. Zero Year -> Endgame is great.

They'll be as dismissive about their handling of female Batman characters as ever I'm sure.

Cause it is fucking creepy, she was a kid when they met

You say that like she will never grow up?

They are both adults.. wait I'm discussing Batman. Holy shit i need sleep. My point is I don't find it creepy, but a little weird considering Barbara used to be intimate with Dick.

The voice direction and delivery is exceptional so if it's predominantly the acting talent on hand, instead of Bruce Timm and the creative folk that made the questionable decisions that have everyone up in arms, try to go easy on them. They don't deserve the flak.

The first half hour of Killing Joke is so eye rollingly bad it's almost unbelievable.

Just wait until you meet Barbara's gay best friend caricature. WOW.

I'm hearing that
apparently the sex was incredible.
Like, apparently the movie absolutely had to let the viewer know of this fact lol.

According to comics twitter, Azzerello got boo'd at and he called someone a pussy. Yeah, people did not take this movie well.

I just finished watching it, and this was exactly what I thought. i couldn't believe the characterization of Batgirl.

Tonally the ending feels so out of place, and literally laughs in the face of those brutalized in order to share a bro moment with a killer/rapist.

...is it okay if I not like Bruce Timm anymore, Internet?

I haven't liked him since he try'd to hook up Diana and Bruce. You just couldn't give Bruce one female friend who didn't want to fuck him could ya. That and he had the perfect opportunity to show what a villainous Batman was capable of and punted, Lord Batman should have been the mastermind behind the whole Justice Lords arc. He was the one who was a-ok with Superman killing Luthor, He was the one who built a dimensional teleporter to a world that just so happened to have a weapon that could de-power his teammates who he had been estranged from for an unknown length of time. He's literally the most powerful person on his world at the end of the episode with an Army of Superman robots. That's some Owlman level shit right there.

I never saw Bruce as a father figure to Barbara. Barbara was in college in the animated series (I believe she graduated too?) and Bruce was drawn without greying hair or wrinkles. In fact, he looks like he's in his late twenties so make an argument about age differences is kind of moot (and also kind of stupid too - age ain't nothing but a number).

I'm sorry, but you think as long as someone looks young that doesn't make them old???

I believe the Bruce and Diana thing actually originated in the comics. Joe Kelly's JLA run I think. That pairing actually made sense to me.

Ouch. I should cancel my preorder before it's too late.

New thread?

Haven't read Killing Joke in some years, but yeah this was not in the book. Hell, it actually makes the whole rape scene even worse.

Bats and Batgirl have rough sex, THEN she gets raped.

Somebody tell me I'm on some weird coffee hallucination.

I actually don't remember her being raped, only the naked pictures

Joe Kelly run was 2002-2004

Justice League was 2001--2004

the Bruce/Diana thing was well into production by the time the Kelly comics came out.

Maybe the two talked to each other I dunno, shit was still dumb.

Didn't they only introduce it in JLU though? It was part of Kelly's run from his first issue. I don't think it was ever handled all that well, I just like the idea.

Yikes. From what I've read it seems that the Batgirl prologue is thirty minutes of Barbara being thirsty for Bats. Let's dispel this notion that Bruce Time doesn't know what he's doing, he knows exactly what he's doing.

I'm cringing at the thought of how the rest of the film is handled. I'm expecting Snyder levels of shock to appeal to the teenage dudebro crowd. Hopefully I'm wrong and there's more to look forward to other than Hamill's and Conroy's performances.

When discussions of The Killing Joke come up I usually find myself defending it. I'm not a fan of violence towards women and have issues with Barbara's characterization, but all types of subject matter has its place in fiction as long as it's handled carefully which I think the comic mostly accomplishes. In the wrong hands though, this story can get really really ugly. We'll see how it plays out when it hits on-demand.

I'm a bit confused by this statement. What does them having sex and her getting raped have to do with one another (or the sex being rough)?

Kelly's first issue on JLA hit shelves in the last week of 2001 and had a few months of production time, perhaps longer depending on how far out Kelly planned his story arcs. The Justice League cartoon had a much longer production time by virtue of being an animated series BUT according to show producers they weren't even thinking about BMxWW until they heard fan reactions to the "The Brave and the Bold" episode and that peck on the cheek which aired March 2002, and the next "moment" between them doesn't happen until "Maid of Honor" which aired during the second season in October 2003.

Perhaps this was never about Batgirl and Batman.

Perhaps, it was really about Barbara Gordon and Bruce
Timm
.

... I still need to watch this once it's out.
