Why PS3 might be so feature rich?

They're saying it's future ready. And by god is it ever (Gigbit ethernet, Wi-Fi, BRD, 2 HDMI ports, etc, etc). I'm thinking this is for one main reason, they expect next-gen to last much longer than past console cycles. If PS3/X360 can do Killzone-type graphics down the line, will anyone really want a new console in 2010-11? Laws of diminishing returns are real, and maybe Sony thinks that this could be a decade-long platform. Or maybe I'm high and totally off base.

Discuss.

First lets discuss your avatar. It disturbs me.

Well, for 465 smackers the PS3 better leave my broke ass feenin for a cig after a night hawt action.

PS3 might last longer than before, but I don't see the 360 doing that. In fact, I picture Microsoft releasing XBOX3 in 2009.

I'm just going to use it for Movies on Blu-Ray. I mean can you imagine a Duo HDMI HD Headset? It would be so sharp you could almost reach out and grab.. I mean it would look fantastic. :)

Yea, I could see the next gen lasting longer. But it will be replaced. In 6 years we'll be saying "last generation was the leap to HD gaming, the next is mastering it."

PS3 looks to have long legs. But the quesiton is: how much is it going to cost? I'd really be shocked to see it under $400.

Well Sony always has taken a hit on new hardware, it will be released next year, BR and cell are produced in house and will be mass produced for more than just PS3, and Sony will have X360 and Halo 3 to compete with. I think it will be $300.

I'm tired. Gammar getting bad. MK.

We will alway need more performance... That's human behavior!

It's supposed to be MR. Banana Grabber. Then the place that I hotlinked this from changed teh image, and since I can't get into my User CP, I can't change it to something else. Me = OWNED. I probably should have hosted it somewhere first (I'm such a lazy bastard). I hated it so much I bloked the image in Firefox :lol

If they can do VR using those 2 HDMI ports in 1080px2.... I won't need a another console.

To be honest, when I was a kid and looked at the boxart for games like Asteroids for the 2600... I use to think, why don't the games look like that? I believe we past the point where games DID look like that whent he PS2 and XB1 came out..... So that means this coming generation is actually a step beyond what I used to dream about playing when I was a kid.

Seeing these new consoles and graphics... Makes me feel old.... These aren't even my dreams anymore....they are beyond. Bring it on baby!

No, my post isn't like "PS3 is all we'll ever need". It's more like "PS3 will be more than we need for a lot longer than 5 years". Just a prediction, we'll see in 2005 if we're all clamouring for a PS4.

I honestly believe that the stuff we're seeing for X360 isn't indicative of what the thing can do. It is an impressive piece of hardware going off the specs, it's going to be just as impressive as PS3 I bet. Just needs games that have more time to be deved, and from better devs (*looks at Bungie*)

I'm curious as to what they're going to do with the dual HDMI outs. I have a hard time imagining that the PS3, as powerful as it most likely will be is able to convincingly display two 1080p signals simultaneously without sacrificing a lot in other areas graphically. 1080p is a pretty high resolution signal.

Ok fine, 1080ix2... you wouldn't be impressed? :)

No, I would be, I'm just having a hard time imagining PS3 doing twice the geometry, texturing, etc without a significant graphical downgrade from single screen. It's still a cool feature, and if used properly could be cool. But I see dual 1080p to be something more like 480p on PS2. Yes, it can be done, but very few devs actually bother to do it.

Well they could cut the framerate down to 30FPS (bad idea IMO) and not lose any detail.

Realtime graphics combined with animation will have a long long long way to go after PS3.

It remains to be seen just how "CG-like" actual games can be.

I don't expect to see PS4 until 2012 which would be standard for Playstation generations.

the Playstation4 should reach Sony's originally announced goals for PS3.

the PS3 will no doubt do almost everything that Sony claimed for PS2:
(i.e. PS1 CGI in realtime, and even so called "movie quality" graphics in the eyes of Joe Shmo, even if they're not technicially movie quality graphics.

what I want to see is live video chat and internet browsing on one screen, and playing a PS2 game on the other screen (PS3 games should devote the full power of PS3 but PS1/PS2 games and everything else can divide up the reources to do things at the same time)

Im not a hardcore tech head but from what Ive read we're still not anywhere close to seeing real time raytracing achieved in games (the holy grail for lighting) and AI/physics systems are still in their infancy to say the very least. High powered shaders and polys are great but we've got a long way to go. 3D kinda just learned to walk on its own two legs this past gen. Its just starting to come of age really. So the cries of diminishing returns seems overblown to me. I dont think the 5 year cycle is in any danger.

Ok then Sony REALLY went overboard with the PS3's extras. Hey, I ain't complain' as long as it's $300.

I'm not totally sure, but I do believe that IBM developed demo -- the 3D landscape made of real-world satellite imagery and heightmaps -- might have been realtime raytraced. I know there was atleast one demo produced by STI that used raytracing, I'm just not 100% unsure which and if it was showed.

i cant believe its got sd and cf card slots in it. cant use the ol' "sony only" saying on ps3.

Same, it kind of shocked me. Although, in hindsight I suppose we should have seen it coming as all Sony VAIOs (desktop) have used their "multicard reader" module for something like a year and Sony's (lead in several respects by SCE|Kutaragi) has been pushing for open support and a move to profiting off digital media instead of propietary hardware.

Hey, it's the Sony we've all wanted. I'm not going to complain, in fact, it's awesome.

That image right there is why we need one standard for everthing. I fucking hate splintered markets.

It's got web browsing too. It really sounds like Sony is trying to make a replacement for the PC in the living room.

No, it "browses the cyberspace."

Sony uses some seriously vague and bullshitty language at their conference in regards to their online strategy.

It wont. $350 if you're lucky, but I doubt it.

Hardly. No one is interested in real-time raytracing. Global illumination on the other hand...

I totally agree. that is why, before the end of the early part of the next decade (2012-2013) we will have Playstation4 with 30 to 50 times more power than PS3 (and thus 1000 times the performance of PS2)

then the Playstation5 should finally bring in full blown raytracing and global illumination into realtime GAMEPLAY, by 2020 or so.

the PS4 might be able to achieve modest faked raytracing in games. but it wont be until PS5 that we really have it to full effect in complex scenes.

beyond Playstation5 ? maybe by THEN we wont need better graphics, beyond PS5. maybe then, during the PS5 era, it will be discovered that there are diminishing returns, which might make PS6 being a graphical leap unnessessary.

but diminishing returns now? not even remotely close.

Oh I didnt mean to infer that (at least I hope Sony didnt claim raytracing on the PS3?), Im sure there are people a whole hell of a lot smarter than me who could comment on the subject. But as a layman in general I get the impression that the so called diminishing returns worry is just plain overboard. Im really excited about Cell and 360's Multicore processor (moreso Cell), and both GPUs sound like they're going to be beastly. But 3D has plenty of milestones to reach before we can say we've reached a bottleneck of some sort.
