Obviously it ain't happening, and I think it's a huge mistake.
I don't want to derail the current Superman Returns thread, so I'll post some stuff I said there here and then the discussion could continue here...
The reasons why I think that Superman movies should be based on Smallville are as follows.
---begin paste---
The show appeals to many demographics, and making it into a movie would be an excellent idea. The biggest reason why I say this is because it's a modern day Superman universe.
SR is going to be based on the old universe we know...but with different actors who are supposed to live up to the performances of the older movies. It will seem very disconnected since fashions have changed since then, and Clark's hair is superwacked...which is fine if it's set in the modern day...but it's set 5 years after Superman 2.
--end paste---
With SR, we have a case of "remember the last series, but only remember the first 2 movies and forget the rest".
It's not like Batman Begins where things start a new...which isn't so hard for people.
Besides, the older movies are QUITE OLD. Using a 1979 movie as one of the prequels...it's a bit of a stretch.
I just see Smallville with a universe with so much promise. Welling would make a far better Superman than Routh, and the way Zod is a part of the Smallville universe is a great way to introduce the character in a movie that will do some major damage. I don't know how Zod manages to come back after Superman 2...but to me it's just tarnishing what was a great story told long ago...leave it as is and start anew.
Of course, the movie will go ahead despite what I say. I just hope it flops so bad that WB realizes their mistake.
