Wii U Buyer's remorse thread

Well, at least it plays Netflix... Okay, sick of Netflix for the moment. Let me pop in this DVD I just got, oh, nevermind. How about this Blu-ray? Crap... Can I at least stream over my network..? Okay, so it's Netflix, no games, and... that's it. Hooray.

I hope you didn't buy a Wii U at launch because it had no games you were interested in and thought it would make a good media player.

I really do wonder, what do people find so fascinating about miiverse? all this talk of amazing and such is pretty baffling to me. are some hyping it for the sake of hyping it? or because it's the one thing that stands out about the console at launch?

It's a novel concept with a lot of potential. I expect to see some mutation of it as standard on all consoles in the future.

For now, I like looking at the pictures. Some people have mentioned using it as a way to solicit tips.

disappointment....

Does that mean that you are willing to sell your Wii U and games? If you are and you're willing to deal, I'll buy it off of you. It is a used system after all.

If you have the premium black, wipe the hard drive of all the data and I'll buy it off of you for $250. Depending on which games you have I will buy some of those too for $30 dollars each.

You get buyer's remorse for video game consoles less than a month after release?

C'mon son.
I usually get buyer's remorse an hour after buying, and then it stays for a couple of weeks, and then I get used to it like I would to a violent sponge that made himself comfortable in my home and live with it.

I'd be incredibly surprised if you had an LCD device that looked better than this before the release of iPhone 4, 2.5 years ago... but maybe you did. I dunno.

This is definitely superior to early iPhone screens and all versions of PSP (Go aside?), so....

No way. I'm a former 3GS owner. And yeah the PSP screens were quite bad, but they're from 2005-6. I was disappointed to not see a modern screen. Not saying it hurts my eyes or anything, but it was disappointing to me to not be able to think of the tablet screen as a possible use case as a real tablet, instead of a secondary game screen.

Social networks are a big deal, right? Last half decade of history has borne that out, yes? So a social network being built into the framework of a console (in the games, even) is pretty noteworthy.

The social aspect is cool and it has potential. I can see how some would find some comments about it to be "hyperbole" but a lot of people are greatly enjoying the function.

I don't regret a thing. Everyone will crawl back when revisions of the Wii U don't have Wii backwards compatability or two less USB's or something.

See the GameCube, Wii, PS3 and even the PSP for precedence.

Every launch run of a console is a limited edition.

Why are you guys buying WiiU games that are ports? Isn't the logic behind buying a WiiU that it's exclusives will be unique enough to justify the cost of a new console?

Is anyone really buying a WiiU so they can experience a marginally better looking version of Call of Duty Whatever # and Mass Effect 3?

Have you tried it?

I have and I guarantee you that Sony and MS will copy this awesome feature. Imagine every game you own having its own personal message board built right into the OS, and you'll have an idea about its potential for making online gaming more social. The way they included the feature is very visceral.

EDIT: Anyone so bummed about your Wii U purchase that you want to sell it give me a PM and we might be able to work something out.

Not that I think you have a genuine interest since you've already poisoned the well with the idea that people are hyping it just for the sake of hyping it, but I'll entertain your question anyway.

The art. It's all about the art.

I don't think i have buyers remorse, but i'm disappointed I got bit by the bug only to have Nintendo delay the games I wanted. If the Wii U gets a price drop before I end up buying another game, I'm going to be pissed.

It seems dumb in concept, but when you actually use it for a while, it's a really neat feature that's fun to check in on here and there to see what/how others are playing.

I didn't think i'd care about it, but having used it, I find I go on and check daily to see what new things pop up.

It does play (shitty?) games tho, right?.

Go look at a 3GS again sometime. I think you'll be surprised just how much your expectations have changed in a few years. It might as well be a Game Boy Color at this point :P

But yes, clearly we had different expectations. I knew there was no way in hell that the LCD was anywhere near to modern tablets. I expected something like the 3DS screen. And the Wii U's is better quality than that, so I was surprised. It is much closer to the experience of playing on an HDTV than I expected. I thought off-TV play would be incredibly ghetto compared to the TV.

In all honesty, this is the most fun I've had for a console launch in a long time. I expected almost nothing from Nintendo Land but what I got was one of the best multiplayer experiences I've ever played. I was expecting a ho-hum Mario experience from New Super Mario Bros U, but it's probably the best New Super Mario Bros game and the challenge mode addition is incredible. The only game I was really looking forward to greatly was ZombiU and that did not disappoint. The other two games I got in Sonic & All-Stars racing and Tekken are multiplatform games but have some great Wii U specific additions and both are great as well. Not to mention Miiverse which has been another pleasant surprise.

There are some major downsides to the system as far as the OS and some online interactions go (namely download speed), but to say that I haven't had fun with the system would be a lie. I do agree though, 2013 doesn't look so hot. I'm pretty worried about how much usage I'll be getting out of the system come next year but at the moment I'm having a lot of fun. I personally didn't buy the system for third party multiplatform games or huge third party support in general. I have my 360 and PS3 as well as my PC for those and whenever the 720 and PS4 come out I'll pick those up in due time to get the exclusives as well.

But basically what I'm saying is that I have gotten more out of the Wii U than I ever really expected so far.

isnt the ppi on par with ipad 2? i swap between the gamepad and my ipad 4 and it isnt really jarring at all.

Edit just checked its a higher ppi than ipad 2 screen.

I don't buy a console until it has games I want, for this very reason...
Nintendo systems are usually really good at at least offering a few really good games immediately, even this has NSMBU with NintendoLand as a solid pack-in for Deluxe systems. Only the DS and 3DS have been anomalies there, Pilotwings was practically the opposite of what I wanted, Steel Diver sounded too shallow, Nintendogs is a curiosity at best, and everything awesome sounding was at least several months away, if not a full year (KID ICARUS).

Starting to feel the buyers remorse myself. Haven't really touched it for over a week now and the releases between now and the next 4 months are so sparse. Should have held off till after E3.

I bought it for Mario and Pikmin, not disappointed in the slightest. Even ended up getting Nano Assault Neo and still might jump on Mighty Switch Force: Hyper Drive Edition. Don't really care about launch period 3rd party games at all, not why I bought a Wii U. Nintendo Land is also better than expected.

I could see people who only owned a Wii getting the Wii U hoping to start picking through the 360/PS3 3rd party games that are disappointed by the ports being unoptimized, but for new hardware getting ports from systems that are 7 years old it shouldn't be surprising. Devs know how the PS360 works, Wii U just launched.

Is this a goosebumps reference or is sponge horror a full thing?

I'm very happy with mine. In fact, some features like Miiverse and off TV gameplay on the gamepad surprised me in a very positive way since I wasn't really expecting a whole lot from those features. Launch game selection was stellar and perhaps one of the best of all time along with the Vita.

The only negatives so far are the slow download speeds from Nintendo Network and the low battery life of the Gamepad. Third party support in the future when the other competitors are out could be another big issue but I guess we'll find out next year.

Agreed, Nintendo has lied about 3rd party support on N64, NGC, Wii & Wii U.

While that's probably true (especially with Wii, 3DS in the West and even more blatantly with Wii U) there were also a lot of people who lied to themselves about this question. There was absolutely nothing that suggested that things would be different this time.

You were willing to pay over $250 for a second controller? It's strange how people don't consider all of the factors that go into making a game console controller. With everything the Gamepad does, they had to keep the price down in certain areas. And seeing as how it has a better ppi than the ipad2, I don't think they saw it as enough of a problem as to raise the price of the controller considerably for an HD screen.

Apple iPad 2 131.96 PPI
Wii U GamePad 158.01 PPI

Well sorta... I dunno, with Cube and Wii it was like the last 1/5th of the life that had features removed. By far the vast majority of Cubes/Wiis (80-90%+) have the same spec as the launch model.

But with Sony... yeah. Absolutely. PS1 and PS2 all lost features consistently over the life...

If you were viewing the same image on the 3GS and the Tablet, I'm 100% sure that the image will look a magnitude finer on the 3GS than the Utab. The higher PPI, better black levels, and the fact that the image appears to be a good 1-2mm closer to the glass will make the image look much better.

Its just that much harder using resistive and a 6+" screen to make the resultant image look as good.

I've only played two games on my Wii U, New Super Mario Bros U and Scribblenauts Unlimited. Loving the concept of Miiverse and its integration with these games and beyond. Agreed that the OS needs some tweaking, but I'd like to think I know what I'm in for purchasing a Nintendo device. Pretty satisfied so far.

The PPIs are nearly the same.. but I can see your point.

ppi is pretty close 158 to 165. Not to mention the costs, i think they found a nice middle ground with the screen and the more i play with the gamepad the more i see reasons for the resistive touch.

And PS3. I know people who refuse to sell their PS3 Fat for a slim or super slim because the og PS3 came stacked with hardware features like BC.

I've regretted most of my launch purchases. Approximately 8 hours after I bought my Xbox, Halo was beaten and the waiting started. The launches for the next xbox/playstation will likely be disappointing with how divided the community is becoming.

(not a WiiU owner, yet)

Honestly, I think the big problem with the screen is the fact it's always being contrasted with your TV, and unless you have a crap TV that's probably going to curbstomp the shit out of the tablet screen, especially with a game that has heavy streaming compression for whatever reason. It hasn't been an issue with DS or 3DS usually, though the 3DS XL does look kinda washed out to me on games like Sticker Star.

I'm pretty satisfied so far with the WiiU. Sure the OS could use some tweaking, but I'm sure future firmware updates will address this. As for the lack of software... it's still the launch period. Give it some time, the library will grow.

That is very true. And the same time you're discovering the gamepad, you're also discovering Nintendo in HD, so it's going to pale in comparison...

Let me ask you something. The Apple ipad 2 (March 2011) came out way after the Apple 3GS (June 2009). Why do you think Apple gave the ipad 2 a lower ppi than their, at the time, 2 year old phone?

I regret buying one and didn't even buy 6 games with it. All of the flaws pointed out in the OP are valid, and it only reminds me why I should have waited.

2013 looks bad, with Pikmin 3 sliding to June possibly, and a bunch of Q1 titles having no firm date. Even Toki Tori 2 got delayed like a week before release. It's shitty how we literally have no idea what's coming out on this thing. I could have waited a year and missed out on nothing, except hearing everyone ask me why I spent money on it.

I do like Nintendo first party titles and the console itself is great, it just feels like a bad purchase right now.

The only thing I regret is that I didn't pre-order a black Wii U Pro Controller along with my Digital Deluxe bundle. Ninja Gaiden is doable on the gamepad but it just feels like I need a more traditional controller.

I hope I find one by the time Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is out.

I think its pretty decent screen tbh, i have a nice sony tv with great pq and yeah it doesnt stand up to my £2000 tv but it doesnt look bad at all.

Well I was the one defending it for the last page or so.. so I'm with you. ;)

Because one is a 3.5" device and one is a 9.7" device. Screen prices dropped like a large rock not too soon afterwards pushing both of those to get replaced by models with completely superior screens at the same price or less, less than a year later. We're now almost 2 years ahead. Lets not go crazy.

It's just a cheap screen but theres nothing wrong with that. No need to overdefend. Its still plenty enough to game on and whatnot but I just can't see using the non-WiiU game functions over another device with a better screen. It'd be like watching a movie on a CRT instead of a Plasma.

Yeah me too, it really surprised me tbh i was expecting big ds screen but its better. I think people need to understand that screen costs eat up alot of budget of the tablets they had to find a middle ground and i think they did. I was pissed when i read it was resistive touch pre launch like most people but the more i play the more i see why they chose to go that route.

So far, this has been the best launch of a system ever, and I don't think it's even close. The OS takes 2-3 seconds, nowhere near the other exaggerated amounts. Miiverse is pretty cool. My main gripe is with the no VC and NBA 2K13 having problems saving to the 2K servers, but that's more of a Take Two problem that they need to fix ASAP.

Oh yeah, and every retail game should be direct download. I tend to do my eShopping when I'm drunk.
