Marketing spin from PS360 had a lot to do with the "core/casual" mindset. The market is saturated with shooters(FPS,TPS) and anything that isn't in that one genre is being considered casual. I've seen people calling all sports games casual(Madden specifically)... It's really odd. One genre should not be looked at to define all of "core" gaming.

Where I can agree is that Nintendo didn't do a great job of introducing a particular puzzle mechanic, maybe a couple different variations that were relatively simple, and then build upon them in clever, more complex and creative ways. Which I think would be the far more satisfying and organic way to "teach" the player. A lot of the puzzle design, not all, but a lot of it seemed just tossed together or in service to a dungeon theme or just out of left field. It didn't have a natural sort of build up to a lot of it, which made it less "man, I can't wait to try that again" and more "glad I figured that out, because it was a hassle and don't want to do it again". I also think Zelda needs to work toward a design that offers and encourages experimentation with multiple options to solve each puzzle and sequence break a lot.

Man, I would love to comb over SS puzzle by puzzle or just have a listing of all the puzzles in the game because without it its only my word vs yours but I'm going to say it anyway. That bolded statement isn't even close to being true.

The problem for defining is

what is a core gamer? there IS no definition.

For what it's worth, the term "core audience" is pretty well defined.

The main kind of people who watch a particular type of programme, listen to a particular type of music etc.

That's it.  It just means people who do it a lot (which ends up being a group that can be more easily marketed to).

As a corollary: There is such a thing as a core audience for particular genres of games. There is not really such a thing as a "core game". A game can be more in line with what appeals to the common interests of a core audience, but it is incredibly disingenuous to apply the labels for the audience to the products themselves, especially in a rigid fashion. Wii Play, for instance, mostly seems to be enjoyed by more of the casual audience, but its mechanics allow for some of the most insane core attachment I've ever seen.

I have a lot of trouble imagining anything not announced or implied so far that would be in danger of being stolen... Online their playing catchup, unique online stuff wouldn't be hard to "steal" in a short amount of time no matter when they disclose it, uses for the controller in new first-party IP's being stolen is pretty immaterial. So unless it's something BIG they still haven't shown, I have no clue what all the secrecy is about.

Other than possibly behind the scenes trying to lock up some type of exclusive stuff, or logistical stuff like that, or maybe it's just going to be a mess of a launch. Nintendo really needs to show off one big first party 2013 game that really cranks one out for the Nintendo fan base.

The more time that passes the more I'm convinced Nintendo is taking an Apple approach with the Wii U. They announce very few details up until, seemingly, the last minute and they are starting to do their own conferences with the Nintendo directs.

I guess you've never been to a Madden tournament. Madden is a core franchise within it's genre. It's not an ultra-violent bloodbath... but then, it doesn't have to be... Fifa is another "core" franchise in the genre...

I think the rep who told him typically didn't know the actual resolution the game was displaying in. For a lot of people "displaying in high definition" is easily confused as "displaying on 1080p", as 1080p is generally the resolution marketed as HD. Plus the Wii U technically outputs at 1080p, and it may have technically been playing on a 1080p screen (thus upscaled).

Until the developers specify that the game natively renders in 1080p, I will by default assume all games are running in 720p, with the exception of the most simple (eg: Scribblenauts).

I thought I saw a video back around E3 where Ubisoft said that all (console) versions of AC3 will be 720p.

Thats probably the best description i have read in the past few years.

I would put NSMB in the 'casual' bracket and Galaxy in the 'hardcore' bracket but this is just my opinion .

It has nothing to do with how difficult they are and more to do with who they are aimed at, NSMB is aimed at the people who bought a Wii for Wii Sports / Play / Fit and family games while Galaxy was made for the hardcore Nintendo fans who wanted a sequel to Mario 64 and Sunshine.

The casual / core thing has really muddied the waters this generation and made conversation difficult. Problem is I use the terms myself sometimes as a shortcut just because so many people are basically familiar with what they get at. But it's problematic.

It seems the whole thing was really invented as a desperate attempt to explain what the hell was going on with the Wii - and used by some people to invalidate the Wii's success, by framing this new form of 'casual' gamer as someone who isn't a real gamer (the true faithful) and thus not a 'threat' to the self image gamers have.

But of course, nearly any game can be played 'casually' and nearly any game can be played i n a way that's 'hardcore'. There are hardcore Bejeweled players out there who will wipe the floor up with any l33t 20 year old brah who thinks he's a real gamer because he only uses game pads with thumb sticks.

I think, with 2D Mario, and 2D games in general, it could merely be an issue of accessibility. It takes less time to get to 'the fun part' and so it's more enjoyable for a wider range of people. The key thing is, accessibility doesn't automatically mean 'causal'. 2D shmups are easy for anyone to understand but can be some of the most difficult games on Earth. 2D Mario can be extremely hard and some of the most complex platforming around.

A lot of people really misunderstood the entire point of the Wii at the start of this gen by buying into the derogatory propaganda about how casual = weenie poo for old ladies. Wii was really about returning a sense of accessibility to gaming for the masses. Wii Sports gets quite hard if you play it for real, with a rather great dynamic difficulty system. Most brahs who flailed around with a Wii for 30 minutes and then quite never appeared to realize stuff like that.

The problem with 3D Mario (from a mass market perspective) is that it simply takes a lot longer to learn and become able to play at a competent level if you're unfamiliar with 3D games. It's rewarding in that there's a lot of interesting and fun game mechanics native to its 3D nature. But this is why Nintendo has been trying VERY hard to figure out a way to streamline the 3D experience. Mario Galaxy 2 introduced many presentational and structural elements of 2D Mario to coax people into it. Super Mario 3D Land, in the opinion of even many hardcore Mario players, is the most intuitive fusion of 2D and 3D so far, and the easiest to get up to speed in. (3D Land's sole flaw is that the designers were so afraid of scaring off new people too quickly, that the front half of the game is too easy. Fun as hell, but far too easy by any standard.)




And don't forget, before NSMB, MANY long time gamers had been talking about 'why won't Nintendo make any new 2D games'. The return of 2D Mario games (and side scrollers in general) was something pined for by the hardcore gaming sect, who viewed the abandonment of 2D as shortsighted.

So 2D Mario comes back, and we see just how big a market there really is for 2D games. That there's a point to the concept of a 2D game. That things don't have to be 3D (mechanically) just for the sake of it.

Except now that 2D has succeeded more than 3D, 2D is 'casual'? Where's the sense in this.

Wii U is essentially what I've been saying it is. I'm content enough with what is known and what I have mentioned that for me I don't need to dig further on what it will be capable of power-wise. I'll still discuss hardware-related things like how Wii U might accomplish certain things (most recently lighting), but those things will be within the realm of what Wii U can do and not something as to "still trying to figure out" what it is capable of doing. IMO there's nothing left to learn when it comes to Wii U's power. Exact specs not included, but they won't be anything beyond what we already expect.

Forget the individual components in this case. It's a console that will be a noticeable, but not clear jump over PS360. And on the flip-side it won't be blown away PS4 and Xbox 3. The hardware itself will be able to do more than just having those titles in HD with improved textures because Wii U is beyond a generational leap over Wii.

With Nintendo statements it sounds like Nintendo is expecting the Wii U to be the PS2 power of next gen, but if the Wii U is the Dreamcast power of next gen at least it won't be nothing like this gen with the Wii and PS3/360, and the Dreamcast wasn't that much weaker than the PS2.

-1 star - police follow you on foot and try to make an arrest. No sirens, no car chases (unless you are speeding).

-2 star - police will still attempt to make an arrest. If a weapon is drawn then the police will begin opening fire. Police will use stun guns if a weapon is not drawn.

-3 star - Chases begin and the police don't care how they stop you, they just want to do it.

-4 star - road traps, radio stations and much more hostile police. Even when you have evaded them, they will still search for 24 in-game hours for someone matching your description.

-5 star - shoot to kill, arrest only if it's made very possible. Even when you have evaded them, they will still search for 48 in-game hours for someone matching your description. Few missions become unavailable if you are wanted.

-6 star - military vehicles come after you. Even when you have evaded them, they will still search for 72 in-game hours for someone matching your description. Some missions become unavailable if you are wanted.

-The Map is roughly 3x the size of GTA IV's.
-A Former Protagonist will appear and join Albert's new Gang.
-The Radio has been GREATLY improved. Rockstar has partnered with iHeart Radio, to let you stream Live Radio from any iHeart Radio station in game.
-Nightclubs are back, even including Maisonette 10 as an Easter egg.
-Rockstar has designed the Environment to have at Least 50% of buildings enterable.

Yeah, it might make people think their is no Wii U version and they would just buy the other versions, I want to go to Iwata and Reggie and be like "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!".

Or Nintendo's master plan is to wait till the fall conference and have a huge blow out of info for Wii U.

Yeah I hope they know what they are doing. It's not like 3rd parties even have to mention any special or unique upgrades or anything either. Just a simple logo or reminder would suffice. Whatever though. Its best to not try to understand why Nintendo does the things they do. It can drive a man to madness!

The two newest screen shots looked very much like PS360 graphics to me (the original trailer looked to be the PC version of a current gen console game), i think the release date will be announced in November and it comes out April 2013.

Wii U may get a port in late 2013 but i wouldn't hold you're breath.

We all know Nintendo's relationship with third parties so with news of a possible $150 PS3 'Slimmer', there should be no excuse for people not to grab one if they have the available funds and want to experience the big third party games of late 2012 / 2013 like Borderlands 2, Farcry 3, Resident Evil 6, Tomb Raider, Crysis 3, GTA V, Splinter Cell: Black List, Bioshock: Infinite, Watch Dogs ect.

With PS3 you also get a massive back catalogue of big Triple A exclusive games, free online gaming, a Blu Ray player and it still has God of War Ascension, Last of Us, Beyond and Last Guardian to come in 2013.
