I wanted Nintendo to appear at Gamescom. I was even excited to watch Sony's conference. It felt just like E3, and I enjoy E3 conferences. Even disappointing ones.
It's not free to attend. Pretty sure you need to buy booth space and everything.I was thinking about making thread about this, but it might not be a good idea.
I think it´s a big mistake that Nintendo did not show the WiiU at Gamescom. Nintendo could have had a tonne of free media coverage and average consumers could have tried the WiiU.

There are 250k attended at Gamescom last, so it´s a huge event. Nintendo could have made a great impression on people there.
Nintendo not showing up made them lose free advertising, and early good impression from consumers.
Much more marketing came for Wii U, got it from the site you go on for Nintendo news...Where getting closer .

A Patent Application got published today (filed Jan.25 2012) which shows a balance board with "distance sensors".
Not sure if it was mentioned in older patents but don't think so - all similar schematics just show the four "load sensors".
Incoming Balance Board "redesign" or this is just Nintendo exploring different configurations ?
British developer Sumo Digital has found the Wii U's graphical capability to be "on-par" with current generation consoles - "or maybe even better".
The Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing Transformed developer divulged the information to Eurogamer as we tested out the upcoming racer's Wii U version.
The 3DS and Wii U versions will exclusively support Mii characters, Sumo also confirmed.
The racer allows you to pilot both aircraft and boat forms of your vehicle - necessary for each course's airborne and aquatic sections. It's similar to Nintendo's own racer Mario Kart 7 in this regard, although Sega said that their project was started first.
The Wii U version allows players to use the GamePad screen for Remote Play, or alternatively as a second display offering a rear view.
You can even use the GamePad screen as a weapon-cam, allowing you to guide homing rockets around the course. But this feature can also demonstrate the perils of glancing from screen-to-screen: Eurogamer saw one racer look down to fire his rocket, stop racing, and manage to shoot himself instead.

is that wii u footage?
Considering the bird tech demo we saw from last year was better than anything I seen on the PS3 and that was an old dev kit I shouldn't be worried about this statement...right?.
Also what if he's talking about the Wii U version of Sonic and All Star Racing Transformed, the Darksiders 2 dev said the same thing but than it turned out he was talking about the Wii U version and not the console it self.
Iwata told investors that AC3 on the Wii U will be around 50% of what the Wii U can do. As far as official statements go, that's probably the best we have to go on until we see it in games.
More than likely PC, but I'm assuming the WiiU version won't be far from it other than the fact that it won't run above 720p at 60fps and a few minor things.

Can't imagine it's a whole lot of games, maybe big ass ones with lots of FMV or something. Sticking with single layer might be more reliable (fixed lens, one less moving part) but it might cost more to get a part like that considering everything else out there is dual layer, in that case it could just be a firmware thing that could be changed later.True enough. You would just assume it would be dual layer reader... has to be! How many games on the PS3 were dual layer and how many games on the 360 were multi-disc? Was it in the 100's?

For reference, here's IGN's version:I wonder why they only quoted phrases in this article instead of whole sentences.. ok I'm lying, I've got a very good idea why they've done that. Removing context makes it much easier for "journalists" such as these to twist words and meanings.
So yeah, seems like Eurogamer putting a bit of their own twist on things.Thats how the game plays but Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed also looks good on Nintendos latest console. I only saw two tracks: Adder's Lair, inspired by Golden Axe, and Seaside Hill which is based on a level from last years Sonic Generations. Both looked good like its predecessor, the visuals are bright and chaotic but things were obviously still being fine-tuned for Wii U. Ocean View was nicely designed, especially as the level slowly crumbled around you, forcing you to hit the waves, where you weave in and out of the flailing tentacles of a huge mechanical cephalopod. The game is easily on a par [with Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions], says Lycett. Were still very much getting to grips with what we can make the hardware do [...]. So its hard to really answer that right now, but yeah, I think once weve had a bit more time finding our way around it, chances are you can look to do things that you may not be able to do before.
Cause multipliers are bullshit numbers with no context?I guess we will have to see how much more powerful it is, but haven't we heard it's 3x more powerful?.
Frozenbyte has unveiled the Trine 2 expansion it teased months ago, now titled the "Goblin Menace." A newly released trailer shows off the new areas as the expansion gets shown off at Gamescom 2012.
Goblin Menace will include a new campaign consisting of six new stages, and a host of new skills playable in both the expansion and original game. Also, it presumably includes goblins doing something menacing. It's set to hit PC in the fall, and will be included in the Wii U "Director's Cut" version of the game. Pricing and release information haven't been announced.
"Trine 2: Goblin Menace is an expansion that we wanted to cultivate with a lot of time, effort and love," said Frozenbyte CEO Lauri Hyvarinen, in the announcement. "We feel this expansion is our best work to date."
The screenshots they posted were from the PC version; Wii U version is 720P apparently. But I personally don't care much, it looks amazing really.i think wii u version is confirmed to run at 1080p 60fps.
I am certain it hasn't expired yet; I believe once it does, we will see Rayman featuring those toys.Love the Arkham Assylum box. And NDA's expiring is something I guess...
So should I be disappointed with the Sumo statement or is it possible he was talking about the Wii U version of the game, I mean Vigil did the same.
Wait whats up with NDAs expiring?
Soonish.
No idea. It's rolling, some publishers' are up as soon as this week, others have a while longer yet.
Just because NDAs are expiring does not mean they will talk.
you should just ignore it and move on. this has been discussed to death over the last year and everybody keeps repeating themselves. please let's not start the on-par discussion YET AGAIN.

Wii U launch is just exceptionally good, too good actually, there will be quite a lot of games that I want to pick but won't

Wow, Eurogamer SERIOUSLY twisted the IGN article.
SUMO only said the game itself was on par and even said it was because they didn't know how to use the hardware fully yet. Sadly someone WILL make a thread about this.
Imagine that.
Is this a downloadable title? Or retail? I won't be able to get a Wii U at launch and don't want it to disappear from stores before I can buy it.

Does anyone if Nintendo is going to allow custom soundtracks on Wii U?
If there is streaming music services like Last.fm or Spotify available for Wii U, I can see Nintendo allowing custom soundtracks. But I doubt they would allow for playback of MP3 or Wave files etc. They didn't allow for that on Wii due to fear of illegally obtained music.Does anyone if Nintendo is going to allow custom soundtracks on Wii U?
I wonder if wii u game partitions can be installed on the system itself, just like the 360 and ps3 since wii u optical disks are 25gb.
Not necessarily. Like if the publisher/dev of a game dissolves, the game would likely get pulled (barring some crazy agreement where the store takes the rights in that case). On iOS there's a yearly dev fee, and if that doesn't get paid the apps from that dev will get pulled.still a downloadable game. Trine has always been downloadable anywhere.
also, why would a game disappear from stores? you know you can ALWAYS buy ANY game online, right?
(...already posted this before but whatever) Probably a decent chance of supporting dual layer discs (if they want), depends if the laser is fixed to read single layer in hardware or firmware. I'm guessing the latter just cause it'd probably cost more to do a fixed lens in hardware when every other BD drive in the world is dual layer.I wonder if wii u game partitions can be installed on the system itself, just like the 360 and ps3 since wii u optical disks are 25gb. Also is there any chance for nintendo to increase disk capacity to 50gb dual layer. Just like how sony did with god of war 3?

Oh, right. Well, I guess there was one exception. I do remember though someone saying they didn't want to fully enable custom music to be played due to copyright issues. How dare you forget EXCITETRUCK.
In short, getting WiiU launch games to look as good as end of cycle PS360 games is not a problem. Give us a little more time to figure out the new hardware and we can come up with visuals not even possible on the PS360. Thats a step in the right generation.
