Wii U Satisfaction Thread

Ugh.....it's a common problem. It's overscan. The Wii U UI was designed without the "safe zone" in mind. It drives me bonkers. You can change this setting in the Internet browser, Miiverse, and eShop, but you have to do it for each. As of right now, you cannot correct this on a system-wide level. Hopefully one of the next two big updates will add the feature, because it seems that most people are missing a part of the picture.

Some TVs can correct this issue. Try to set your TV to "just scan" if it has that feature. It seems like most TVs cannot correct overscan, though, unfortunately.
Ah yes, that explains it then. :/

Hopefully my TV will have a setting to correct it.

There are a few wii games with protected saves, though... And yeah... The overscan. Luckily my TV has a no overscan mode. It allows the Wii U to send a perfect per pixel signal, but a lot of TVs don't support it. But if you think about it, it makes no sense for TVs to lack the feature. Over scan in a relic from the old CRT days. It really serves no purpose anymore. Nintendo were forward thinking in sending a true "per pixel" signal... It's too bad, really, that so many "modern" sets are so backward...
Does anyone have a list of which ones?

Also I really wish the Wii U didn't require you to look at the GamePad screen to navigate the OS, since it's a pain in the arse.

I love the music though, it very much reminds me of the Cube.

So I bought a PS3 about 2 months ago now. I have to say that while some people may not think Wii U is much going forward it's a lot easier to tell when you go backward. I'm playing through Disgaea 3 and boy do I wish I could play it on the gamepad, it's just so much more convenient and I wouldn't have to sit in my desk chair (which I do all day). Also just flipping inputs is enough to get annoying sometimes, I need to go back and forth with the video/audio to use my computer and look at faqs etc. It's amazing how quickly I've come to miss just turning on the controller and going.

This is what I've been thinking since I bought it. There are a lot of features that are very user friendly. Having all the games laid out on the main screen is good. There's nothing to shout about but there are a lot of little improvements that make the other consoles look inferior as far as ease of use goes. I can't imagine getting a multiplatform title on anything else.

I'd like to know what you consider the "little improvements" the Wii U brings: I can't think of any, unresponsive touch screen aside. You can't even backup save files in case your system breaks, the Wii U is years behind in terms of ease of use and features. Every Wii U system application seems to follow its own unique set of interface guidelines and independent, but equal settings are replicated at multiple points.

I always have my laptop or tablet handy when playing the Wii U: Using that is much more convenient than using the pretty lacklustre integrated GamePad browser (another application greatly hurt by the low resolution non-multi touch screen). Much better browsers are ubiquitous.

I have to say Zen Pinball 2 is pretty great. Downloaded the Marvel Pack (Spider-Man/Wolverine/Iron Man/Blade) and it's quite addictive. Looking at the leaderboards I have to wonder how the hell people reach those scores, though. I have trouble reaching 5 mil!

Same thing happen with the 3DS version of Zen Pinball. The leaderboard scores were insanely high.

This is not the same thing as what I was talking about.

Why are you in this thread again? Just to disagree with people who are enjoying their Wii U? In a thread dedicated to people enjoying their Wii U? You've already said you wish you didn't buy one.

You're the first person I've heard say the browser is lacklustre. What console has ever had a better browser? What good does a multi-touch screen do when it comes to browsing the web? Zoom in and out? That's what the buttons and sticks are for. Hurt by the low-res screen? Press X to view it on the television. It's not an 'integrated GamePad browser', it's an internet browser on a console.

Not that that has anything to do with what he was even talking about anyway.

Move on, people, don't mind netBuff. That's just his shtick.

I haven't really been following the Wii U virtual console news. So what happens to the 30p games? Because you can't buy F-Zero anymore or Balloon Trip. I missed those games and I just got Punch Out yesterday.

They'll be up for purchase again when the full VC launches, but for $5.00 instead of $0.30.

Just updated my Wii U, I still can go on internet with it, update my games.....but can't use any other online services such as eshop, miiverse or even connect my account. The system keeps displaying error codes not recognized on support.nintendo.com...

My system is from US, but I don't live there, did Nintendo have the great idea to block non-US IP?

UPDATE: err, nevermind, after trying everything within the settings/trial VPN without success I just restarted my router...it works again

Well last time there was down time it was leading up to the last update, wasnt it?

Maybe it's maintenence ready for the Spring update in April ;)

He's in charge of the company. That's how things work in the big boy corporate world.

and again i say, nobody would be on him if he didn't say himself that he would resign. it's no doubt he's made misjudgments in this retrospect but he did it trying to do what people keep whining and complaining about for years and that's trying to get 3rd parties on. but it backfires and you guys blame him. that's rich

In the US here...

Is the standard bundle for $250 (Best Buy promo) with the $50 Target gift card (Target promo) worth it? Or is the deluxe still the better buy? I'm thinking of running out today when I get my 3DS price adjustment and pickup Luigi's Mansion. But I don't know enough about the bundles to know what's worth it. Or, do I just wait until the Deluxe bundle gets a sale in a few months?

Are you planning on going Digital? As the Basic has no reward program (and less space, but neither basic nor deluxe have much if you're downloading retail games).

Would you like Nintendoland? The charging cradle may be of value to you as well, which doesn't come with the Basic.

It really comes down to your preference.

I don't really know, which is why I asked. Are those extras worth the $100? And can't you use an external USB drive to download and store games from the eShop?

Yes you can, which is why I said the difference in GBs isn't too much of an issue overall.

Most who have Nintendoland would say it's a great experience among friends and family. And while you can plug in the Gamepad when not in use, it's much more convenient to just place it in the charging cradle and leave it there. You also get another stand like the one in the picture:

Personally, I got the Deluxe for DDP. Maybe someone who has a Basic can say if they think they made a good choice.

So you get £5 for every retail game? I didn't realise it was such a generous promotion.

I forgot to mention earlier than you can use DDP codes in the 3DS eShop too.

I guess the Best Buy deal is dead, so it's a moot point now. Target is doing a buy a basic and get Nintendoland free, but that makes it buying the additional gigs and cradle for $50 (with digital discount).

I hate choices like this haha.

I'll follow up Jaded Alyx since I'm one of the few who got a Basic. If you're planning on getting Nintendo Land (and you should, it's great) then keep in mind you'll be adding $50 to the price of a Basic.

With the Deluxe you get 10% back on everything you buy from the eShop. If you buy a $50 game you get $5 back. But if you then use that for your next $50 game, you'll spend $45 but still get $5 back. That sounds great, but remember, it would take spending $905 to get $100 back. (Right? Someone might want to double check my math on that...)

The Deluxe has 32gb and the Basic has 8gb built-in storage. The difference is the size of one game (Lego City Undercover). So you'll probably need an external hdd either way unless you routinely delete games to free up space.

I can't comment on the extra stuff like the gamepad stand since I don't have it. I just leave my gamepad plugged in all the time anyway so I don't feel any need for it. Other people seem to like the stand though. I did end up buying the vertical stand for the console from Nintendo for $3. I already own a Wii so I didn't need a sensor bar.

If I were you I would get the Basic, buy Nintendo Land seperately, and put that extra $50 towards a big external hdd. But if you want the gamepad stand, the console stand, the sensor bar, and you're one of the people that buys every game digitally, it might be worth it to get the Deluxe.

Or just wait if there's no game out right now that you really want. The Deluxe is bound to get a good deal in a month or so.

I hope that helps.

Well, if you were going to get Nintendo Land either way it doesn't change much. I'd still say when in doubt, wait. But, that buy 2 get 1 free deal is pretty great.

I recently bought Lego City Undercover and my wife and I are really enjoying the game. The graphics are great and we really like the humor. I also picked up Black Ops as well, I like it, the one down fall is that there isn't a lot of people online and the people I usually play with don't have Wii U's yet, so I'm not sure if I plan to keep it.

It's a good point about the 8GB vs 32GB. Having 32GB really doesn't satisfy people that are downloading a lot of online content anyway.

I'd say it's worth mentioning the color options. Some people might prefer to get a white over a black, even though the the black consoles seems to be somewhat more popular.

A different question. Anyone who's bought the Pro controller and got some experience with it? I'm considering getting one, but the swapped the positions of ABXY and the right analogue stick seems weird. I'm not sure how that works?

Personally I love and hate the Pro Controller.

For one, the stick placement is weird to me but, you know, it's the same on the gamepad so frankly it's something we're all going to have to just get used to unless someone makes a better third party controller. I don't like the decision but it's universal across Nintendo's Wii U controllers so there it is.

That said, the controller's battery life and general feel are pretty good, I personally don't bemoan the lack of an audio port for a mic and in game usage like Warriors Orochi or Tekken Tag I greatly prefer the Pro Controller to the gamepad.

What I hate about the Pro Controller is that despite it being what I consider the better overall controller for games you will still need to keep your gamepad near you anyways a large portion of the time. The gamepad does not work in miiverse, the eShop or the settings nor does it work with the Hulu Plus or Amazon Prime apps so if you plan to play a quick game and then perhaps lounge around and watch a movie you need both fucking controllers at the ready. This drives me insane. Even demos you have downloaded but not yet ran will initially require the gamepad to acknowledge how many uses you have left before the demo starts. It's frustrating as hell.

This may not apply to a lot of people but it's also kind of helped make my Wii U in my living room setup kind of a pain in the fucking ass to use. Basically, I have a cat that loves to chew cords and in my apartment my TV is situation across from a wall that happens to be the perfect size for the couch, I can't really flip the layout because of a lack of plugins and outlets on the side the couch is on and I can't use the other two walls because of window placement so I'm forced to keep the Wii U cradle(which is a great idea and device mind you) on the second row of the entertainment center with all the cords behind it so my demon cat doesn't chew it up. This makes grabbing and setting the gamepad back on the cradle a pain in the ass. Now that part is definitely NOT Nintendo's fault, I'm not blaming Nintendo for my cord eating cat. What becomes a problem is I can hide all my other controllers under the couch and they're good for generally a month and if I wanna play something I just pull out a controller and play, I can do this with the Pro Controller as well, it has great battery life and doesn't need to be plugged in at all times or anything silly like that. It works great for that, unfortunately I find myself still needing the gamepad more or less every time I use the Wii U because of things the Pro Controller just can't do, like launch a demo, browse the eshop, navigate miiverse, and stuff like that. So if you happen to have a setup like mine just keep that in mind.

But man, do I wish I had electricity and another foot on the wall where my couch is so I could put a small table or stand and just keep the gamepad there along with the cradle. Oh well. Or another few hours of battery life on the gamepad. Or if most features of the Wii U just worked with the Pro Controller.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm really thinking of going to grab the Wii U basic from Target today. With free Nintendoland, B2G1, I can get the system, Nintendoland, Monster Hunter, NSMBU, and something like Luigi's Mansion (and thus Mario 3D Land) for $420, and a $50 Target gift card...So effectively $370. Not bad.

Now comes the kicker...If I want to set this up and play games with my wife tonight, do I need to buy a pro controller? I have one from my Wii still, but I don't have any Wii motes (I sold my Wii). What options do I have to make that work?

Get a Wii remote plus, you'll need it for multiplayer nsmbu and Nintendo land

Ah yes, that explains it then. :/

Hopefully my TV will have a setting to correct it.

If memory serves, this applies to all WFC games.

Great feedback, thanks. I'm pretty sure that Nintendo is very keen on keeping the GamePad as an integrated part of the user experience. So it's probably just something we gotta live with.

I think I'll get the Pro controller. After all, it sounds like it's a decent piece of hardware.

I think I spend more time playing games with the Pro once it's supported.

Sonic Racing - Pro
Assassin's Creed III - Pro
The Cave - Pro
Runner 2 - Gamepad (Pro not supported)
Monster Hunter 3 - Pro
NSMBU - Gamepad (Pro not supported)
Nintendoland - Gamepad (ditto)
Lego City Undercover - Gamepad (see above)
Zombi U - Gamepad (guess)
Nano Assault Neo - played before I got a Pro
VC Games - Pro
Tekken Tag Tournament 2 - Pro
Floaty Physics: The Game - played before Pro support
Puddle - meh, can't even remember

can i ask if anyone here has tried Google Docs on the wii u browser? obviously without a keyboard, you wouldn't get that much out of it, but at least some simple edits can be good every now and then.
