Wii U Satisfaction Thread

I hacked the virtual Wii environment of my Wii U for homebrew, HDD loader, etc.

This has increased my satisfaction. It's nice to be able to go back to not having to keep all my Wii discs out.

Hopefully at some point they hack it to play Gamecube game ISOs with the Classic Controller; there are some projects going on to attempt this.

Finally got a pro controller. It's pretty cool, but am I alone in thinking the face buttons are a little too far toward the middle of the controller? Nothing major, but not really as comfortable as I feel like it should be.

What would be better:

I am not sure why you would want that. Thumbs dont move up and down like that, they rotate out. Meaning it is much more comfortable to have the buttons offset out. Like almost every controller does. It is also why Nintendo redesigned the wii u gamepad.

nintendo-shows-off-wii-u-introduces-gamepad-miiverse.jpg

when the prototype was first unveiled, myself and others pointed out how uncomfortable that button layout would be. You would either need to slide your whole hand down, or sort of bend and wrench your thumb at its joints to have it reach down. Rotating your thumb at its base, is medically much more safe, natural and comfortable then constantly using the thumbs joints.

Good thing nintendo agreed, and decided to make the gamepad bigger to accommodate offset buttons.

your suggestion isnt nearly as bad as the directly up and down as the gamepad prototype, but I dont believe it would make the current design more comfortable.

I added you. I'm pretty new to Wii U myself. Had it for a couple of weeks and really enjoying it. My NNID is Wolfburn.

great! I'll add you as soon as I get home. :)

Just so you know, if people add you via Miiverse (a.k.a. the correct way), then the bolded isn't necessary. You'll receive a notification.

thanks for the heads up, I didn't know that. I'll do it that way from now.
Is there a Neogaf NNID official list somewhere?.

Japter made a list in the Need for Speed thread:
Just to automate the NNID thing just slightly I did the Google form/spreadsheet thing I mentioned a few days ago, used Soka's list to fill out the initial spreadsheet with what's been posted so far. You can sort alphabetically by either name or by timestamps. Just used the post and edit dates for Soka's list but seems to retain the order at least.

I put the form for new names here, and spreadsheet here.

Have played my Wii U consistently since launch, but it really has got a hammering over the past week or so with Monster Hunter and NFSMW.

My only concern is what will be out late this year, because between now and say the fourth quarter there is more than enough on this and the 3DS to hold my attention.

What's the general concern level of using/not using a protector on the Wii U controller screen? I have not picked one up yet but am wondering for the sake of longetivity of the product, if I should.

Since the system has been through a bit of a drought lately, I've been away from it for a couple of weeks and doing stuff on my PS3. Came back to ACIII on the U and I was suddenly reminded how much more I like the front end & controller on this system. I like the PS3 a lot, but I just find this system more pleasurable to game on. I wish it was getting more of the recent multi-platform games so I had the choice.

I haven't had any issues since mine slipped off and vanished into some other dimension, but I have heard that the screen can get scratched.

I received NFS yesterday, which is praised for its graphics and I must say I'm far more impressed by the results on the GamePad than on my TV. And the reason is you can't see any jaggies on the GamePad, the render is just beautiful.

Toki Tori 2 is absolutely gorgeous on my TV, but again I still prefer Off TV.

To me Wii U = off TV.

Is that your tv by any chance? :>

End of the month I reckon. Then a couple small ones in the lead up to E3 if past history is to go by.

Investors meeting on the 24th I believe that is automatically some kind of direct alone.
Meh, it's been too long with zero news, zero games, zero anything. As someone who bought the system on Day 1 and has bought new copies of like the top 10-15 WiiU titles, it's frustrating to say the least how little support I feel the system is getting. I wish they would do what they did with the 3DS and give early adopters some sort of bonus for sticking with Nintendo. That way I don't regret, at least a little, the fact that I bought on day 1 as opposed to waiting until now and getting the console for at least $50 off brand new.

Please can somebody answer that if (when!) I buy an external drive and install it and then purchase a game from the eShop, can I choose whether to download/install to the Wii U or the external drive? I ask as I have OCD issues and wish Virtual Console to be on the console and retail games etc to be on the external drive. Thanks in advance!

All downloads goes to the external drive when plugged in. But you can move them right after the install is complete. Kinda sucks. But that's what I did with my VC games too.

More complicated, but to know: It also works this way for games updates and saves.
For several days at first, I thought to have lost my Nintendo Land save. One day when I did not plug my external drive, the game booted, downloaded again the update and my save was "gone"... Conclusion, always plug you HDD, and always move the games you want in the console memory as soon as you downloaded it the first time!

Thanks for this. I think I'll try and get around it by unplugging the external drive when buying Virtual Console games so they've got nowhere else to install but the console. And then plug in the external drive for buying retail/Duck Tale games!

Really the best way to not mess up from my personnal experience, is to let the HDD plugged in all the time. Just move your VC games as soon as you downloaded them. It's a couple menus away only.

well, I just got a WiiU. The Deluxe version with the Zombi U bundle.

here are some impressions:

The Good:
-Loving the GamePad, it's light, the display is crisp and the buttons feels great.
-Loving the Pro Controller... I thought I wouldn't like the thumbstick placement, but after playing a while, I think I love it.
-The Miiverse is really fun, it's addictive and I'm getting better with the drawings.
-I'm enjoying the three games I got so far (New Super Mario, Nintendo Land and Zombi U). Planning to get scribblenauts and AC3 by the end of the month.
-Nintendo on HD. Great, now I'm just hoping for more games to be announced.

The Bad:
-The OS is incredible slow... I really hate it =(
-The GamePad reception is worse than I thought. as soon as a wall gets in the way, I lost connection
-I had a couple of freezes the first day... haven't happened again, not sure why.
-The account system is kinda retarded. I registered myself as a USA user to get the club nintendo points, but I actually live in Mexico, so now I can't use my credit card to buy stuff (i had to make a separate account to buy Punch Out, but aparently, I can play it with both of my accounts, I really don't get it)
-The "installing" times are horribly slow too. And I find it weird that you have to install something after download it... at least let me install it in the background. It's stupid.

Overall, I'm happy with my purchase. I'm concious that it will be a Nintendo machine with a couple of gems here and there; and I'm perfectly happy with that, I'm just hoping to get the "big games". (Zelda, Mario Kart, Smash, etc).

If anyone wants to add me, my NNID is zRuben. Let me know, to add you back =)

I'm from Mexico too, but I livein the border, so I get to go USA like 2 or 3 times per week (the International Bridge is literally 10 minutes away from my house).

Well, I also registered all my accounts (Nintendo Network ID, PSN, Live) with a USA address. and I kinda regret it, because I can't use my Mexican credit card on the stores. The reason why I created my PSN and Live accounts with a USA region setting (back in 2006) was because I thought it would have more content that the Mexico region, but I was wrong. It is the same exact gaming content. But now I can't change the region (I could create a new PSN and Live ID, but I already have a lot of purchases on those accounts), and the reason why I did my eShop with a USA region was because of Club Nintendo. I just found out a few weeks ago that I could have used a Canadian account, because you can use international credit cards and Club Nintendo, but it is too late now, because you can't change the region of your Nintendo Network ID.

Now, I have the advantage of living in the border and the USA is 10 minutes away from here, so I can go and buy PSN, Live and eShop cards, but again, it is annoying to just to buy cards instead of using my credit card. Plus, I have to drive, use gas, pay a $3 toll on the bridge, etc...

So, my advice? I found a website (thanks to GAF) called Maximus Cards ( http://maximuscards.com ) . You can buy, for example, $20 eShop cards for $23. That's a very good deal. Those extra $3 are less that what I spend going to USA to buy eShop cards.

The Nintendo Pro Controller is SO GOOD. Seriously. It's the first and only time where I've actually felt comfortable pressing all four of the shoulder buttons.

I'm not really interested in Monster Hunter, Lego City or Need for Speed, and those have been the only releases the last two months.

I can vouch that Monster Hunter an LEGO City are amazing, but LEGO City is likely to appeal to more people. You should get it.

Alternatively - this is my very first Monster Hunter game, and I'm enjoying it lots.

I understand, but I'm not sure I would call it a drought lately even though I might not be interested in those games. Just sounded a bit odd that's all.

Oh, I don't doubt that all three are good. They're just not up my alley, and I've got enough of a backlog of stuff I really do want to finish anyway, some of it still on the U.

Would you say it is superior performance-wise for, say, CoD, NFS or Sonic Transformed? I've got some store credit I'm eager to use, and I'd like to make use of that GamePad stand, too. :)

I haven't used it for any of those games (despite owning Sonic), but considering they are much faster paced than the games I've used it for so far (Darksiders 2, Monster Hunter), I'd wager a guess and say that it would be superior. My experience with fast-paced games and the Gamepad haven't been great. Having a second screen is great for slower paced games, but faster paced games just start to overwhelm me with it.

Not to mention the lightness of the Pro Controller makes it much more "pick up and playable."

LEGO City Undercover is one of the best games ever. It's so much fun. And I find a lot of parts being rendered very well, some texture works are very good, the only bad point is frame drops but I can live with that when I can enjoy such a wonderful game.

Everyone who hesitates to buy a Wii U should try this game. It's awesome. I can't wait for the Marvel LEGO game !

And not counting all the other great games which are coming like W101, Rayman, Bayonetta 2, Pikmin 3, Assassin's Creed IV... and all the more famous Nintendo franchises like Zelda, Mario and Pokemon.

The post-launce drought has definitely been hard going, but it does look there's finally some decent experiences coming down the line. I do get the feeling either Pikmin 3 or W101 is going to get delayed until later this year so Nintendo have something to sit alongside Mario Kart (more likely than a new mainline Mario, in my opinion) and Wind Waker HD.

I really love the Wii U web browser, it totally surprised me,

listening to youtube while browsing in other tabs is great & the speed in general is actually really fast, so far beyond any other console browser

Also some games work alright in it not searched for many yet but played your typical classic solitaire game here etc,

Also some drawing apps work alright like

Harmony a Procedural Drawing Tool

and although I didn't try it properly it seemed like deviantART muro, the free HTML5 drawing application works

others that may work are:
http://drawception.com/
http://doodleordie.com/

I will have to search for a few more things that work on it, anyone have any other sugestions?

I have a big Plasma screen and I can see jaggies. I'd actually say the bigger your screen, the most visible it is, am I wrong?
Perhaps go into the TV settings and turn the sharpness down/off?

I did that for mine and it looks fantastic.

You can tell the diffrence more when you use the gamepad only a lot then you play the same game on the TV. This happened to me with Black Ops 2, I mean the TV is OK, but it is amazing the IQ on the gamepad IMO.

Sounds crazy, I liked the MonHun demo, was difficult to me, it seems to be one of those games you need to invest so many hours to accomplish something.

I love playing mine. Monster Hunter is great. Bit Trip Runner 2 is great. I have to be honest, most of the games I'm buying for the next 9 months are on the Wii-U and a bunch of indies my PC.

I'm getting GTA V and Dark Souls 2 for 360 but I think that is about it.

Deus Ex: HR Directors Cut
Wonderful 101
Pikmin 3
LOTZ: Windwaker Reborn
Rayman Legends
Bayonetta 2
Watch Dogs

and hopefully Mario Kart U and a 3D Mario platformer or Smash.

That is pretty much my year outside of my 3DS. I am getting a PS4 but not until Spring of next year at the earliest.

I don't have the Wii U version, but the PS3 version of the game looks great on my 40" set, despite the aliasing.
My point was, there's no aliasing at all on the GamePad, which gives it the edge visually speaking. Compared to the muddy Sonic All Star conversion on the same little screen, it is so much optimized you can tell Criterion wanted to please Wii U owners to the max.

I've been meaning to post in this thread for a while -- got my Wii U back in early December & have been nothing but satisfied. Speaking completely outside of Nintendo as a business (sales, marketing, etc.), it sort of amazes me how derided this system is in these forums. I'm either a hell of a lot less jaded than most members or have a hell of a lot less time to play games. This is my haul so far:

--Monster Hunter 3: Ultimate
--Zombi U
--New Super Mario Bros. U
--NintendoLand
--BIT.TRIP Presents Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien
--Little Inferno
--The Cave
--Mighty Switch Force: Hyperdrive Edition
--Nano Assault Neo

This doesn't include F-Zero, Punch Out! & Balloon Fight, which cost me a combined total of $0.90. In my estimation, that's a damn solid haul for a console that's a little over four months old.

Monster Hunter & Zombi U have satisfied the "hardcore" part of my gaming id, especially the former; you'd be hard pressed to find a game with more content -- very few games have sucked me in so deep this early into a console's lifespan. Runner2 & Little Inferno stand as some of the most immaculate, interesting & engaging indie games I've played, & The Cave has been fairly intriguing so far. Meanwhile, Mario, NintendoLand, Nano Assault, Mighty Switch Force & the Virtual Console titles make the strongest core of "old-school" style gaming experiences I've witnessed in ages -- there's a fascinating trend of old-school playability wrapped in new-school presentation on the Wii U, & I love that. It's been strong in Nintendo's (admittedly small) output (the game design present in both Mario & NintendoLand has been severely underrated). The eShop's fast-growing contingent of indie developers solidifies this, I think.

To put a cap on the gaming element of my satisfaction with this console, its upscaling ability has completely revitalized my interest in Wii games, so I've also got Xenoblade Chronicles, BIT.TRIP Complete, Sin & Punishment: Star Successor & No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle in rotation (that last three of which were $10 a pop, new), with The Last Story & Pandora's Tower sure to be my next purchases. On the U side of upcoming games, Pikmin 3, The Wonderful 101, the HD release of The Wind Waker are all locks for me in the next few months. As a guy who likes the quirkier (for lack of a better word) side of gaming, I'd say I'm set for a while.

This is to say nothing of the controller (which has so many features it's almost ridiculous -- especially digging the second screen usage in Monster Hunter, NintendoLand & Zombi U), off-TV play, & OS features such as hopping online in the middle of a game to look up info, turning to Miiverse for hints, posting screenshots instantly, in-game Miiverse integration, or the multimedia end of things. On the note of the Miiverse, I'm a person who doesn't like online social networks, & yet I love the thing. Much has already been said about it, but shortly, Nintendo nailed the "empathy" angle they were going for. It feels more personal, positive & expressive than any of its ilk. Commenting on a game & then getting into a conversation with that game's developer, something that happened to me recently, is pretty exciting -- there's lots of potential in that community.

Anyway, my personal opinion isn't going to invalidate all the types of issues people in a gaming forum like to discuss, & I'm sure those issues are valid in the first place, as far as the Wii U is concerned. Maybe the thing just skews exactly in my direction as a person, but I've had a wonderful experience with this box during its first couple of months. Looking forward to more.

Moved my Wii U so I could play while on my exercise bike which has no TV near it, I love off TV play...just wish the power adapter wasn't $40. Pain in the ass to change the plug where the TV setup is. Wish Nyko or whoever would come out with a cheaper one like they did for the Wii.

I haven't played Sonic in a while but I'd say it's similar, like you can tell it's going from a higher res source and just scaling down to the gamepad, particularly with smaller details like most of the text in menus (or anything with sharp reds where you can see video compression artifacts). I figure the big difference is primarily that NFS is just a better looking source to begin with.

I'm still peeved I'm not finding any deals on games. Assassin's Creed III is getting it's first pricecut, seen Batman AC for € 30... but I want Tekken TT 2 for like € 30.

I just picked up a Pro Controller for £19.99!

Pretty good price I thought, not that I really need it...

I'm still waiting for a price like that. I want one too even though I don't need it (yet).

And does anybody know what's up with Horii's Wii U fightingstick? It should've come out february this year, I pre-ordered one. And suddenly it's delayed until december 2013?? What's up with that? I want one for Tekken... :(

Is Nintendo ever going to let us install games on the hdd? I like the Xbox does it. It gives the optical drive a break and it should improve load times.

I just played AC III for 11 hours straight today, only reason I stopped was because of eye fatigue. The game started out kinda dull, but by the time I got my own pirate ship I was in full-on HOLYSHITTHISGAMEISAWESOME mode. There's like an Elder Scrolls level of sidequests here too, I barely made any progress in the main story despite playing so long.

Anyway, if you're looking for something to play on your U and haven't tried it yet, get it. It's pretty epic.

************

I added up my time today, I'm over 130 hours since buying the system in December, and that's after barely playing in March. I'd say I'm definitely getting my money's worth.
