Wii U Speculation Thread 2: Can't take anymore of this!!!

S/PDIF doesn't have the bandwidth for uncompressed six channel audio. Nintendo would need to add Dolby or DTS encoding, which means worse quality at a higher price. Won't happen. Might as well stick with ProLogic for those who have old surround receivers.
I just hope that HDMI receivers and HTS drop in price by the time Wii U launch, in my country at least the norm for HTS is using optical/analog outputs, a few of them have both, HDMI input and output, and cost a lot money.

I don't know much about audio stuff, but I just have my home theater connected to my TV via optical cable. This way I can use my home theater speakers and sub when I use my TV, Xbox, and Bluray player. Is there something that I should be aware of by doing this instead of connecting optical cables into each of my devices?
I think it's better connect the optical cable output direct to your device (BR Player/360)
I did the same as you (TV acting as input/output), but then there's not channel separation, for some reason you lost channel separation when the audio output is from your TV.

I'm sure there is probably a lot of info in the previous thread that isn't in this one, but to be clear, is it safe to assume that WiiU looks to be using a 4000 series Radeon equivalent from what is known?
Even if it was (and it isn't), that's neither good nor bad in itself.

...of the Rocksteady Studios' rumored game. It actually didn't become my decision anymore, but rather yours, alongside my site's audience through comments and e-mails, and whatever else popped up on the net regarding the story. I'm happy to share it with you, but please, just take it as a rumor. I wouldn't say "grain of salt" rumor, but this isn't like Title Fight. With Title Fight and past content I've put up, if I say it's fact, it is. I can't confirm this one and am just sharing it because you wanted it and because I personally "hope" it's true.

Here ya go:

Rocksteady's Rumored Game

Enjoy.

That just seems like too much of a fanboy wet dream to be true.

But if it is, count me in day -1. TMNT are my favorite superheroes outside of Spiderman and Batman.

Haha, it's funny. When you were teasing that days ago, I started thinking that Rocksteady sounds like "Rocksteady and Bebop" and BAM, now you say it's a possible TMNT game :P

o_0 too good to be true lol. We can only hope.

So after the bomba of a certain cash-in(TMNT Smash Bros. clone) I don't think we'll see an expensive turtles production from RockSteady. It makes 0 sense.

Yeah TMNT is owned by Nickelodeon, which in turn is owned by Viacom. WB isn't involved, and I don't see why they'd bother working on a game based on an IP they don't own.

I was really surprised that TMNT: Smash Up didn't do well....

I still need to play that game lol.

I don't recall Batman Begins setting the charts on fire.

Can you maybe elaborate a little on what you guys are speculating the GPU will be?
No idea, really. Early rumors were indeed pointing at a mid to high end R700, but now that final hardware is out and supposedly different... We'll see. Could be anything at this point.

RockSteady is financially sound after the two Batman games sold incredibly well. I don't see why they would need to develop something like this? A third Batman game besides the Wii U port of Arkham City makes more sense.

Counterpoint: I don't recall anything TMNT related setting anything on fire in the last 5 years or so. The CG movie bombed ignore that, the cartoon ended ages ago, and as said the games haven't done much. The franchise is back to pre-2003 levels of surfing nearly completely on nostalgia.

Meanwhile, Batman is always popular.

uh...no it didn't. Since when is a $95 million profit, on a film with a 34 million budget a bomb?

The only thing I would imagine is that Nick is pushing a new animated series this year, and believe there is supposed to be a movie out in the next yr or two.

Even so, why would Rocksteady of all studios develop the game? A sequel to republic commando would fit Retro Studios pretty well but the logistics and rights involved make such a thing impossible. The same with Rocksteady, they don't own the IP, their publisher doesn't own the IP and the people who do have the IP have their own partners.

I think that's why the audio is very weak when I watch TV (directv), but the audio still sounds amazing when I play my 360 or BD player. I hope the Wii U still plays audio well unlike my satellite receiver.

That's a fair point.
Er.. hmm..

I just think the prospect is exciting.
Though we actually haven't seen them do co-op either yet.

Rocksteady making Rocksteady...too perfect, lol. Yeah I really don't know if it's real or not, but it was fun to read. Certain things seem like it would make it fake from the get-go, but at least it's a fun thought.

You said you had sources telling you this, or is it more of an "educated" guess?

...but no one that could guarantee me its validity. And by guarantee I mean either giving me screenshots, videos, or actually be a member of the development team/someone directly affiliated with the project (artist, voice actor, designer, market and research rep, etc).

I like Batman and really am impressed with what Rocksteady has done with the character, but I'd want to see them take on Superman (though it'd be a very different type of game). In the case of TMNT, I'd be pretty satisfied...and a little too surprised almost.

So... you have Xbox and Blu Ray connected to your TV via HDMI, and then optical out from TV to the optical-in on the receiver? A lot of TVs will just downmix the audio stream to stereo when it sends over optical out.

If you have a 360 Slim (dedicated optical out instead of messing around with the component video cable), you could just feed the receiver directly. I would recommend doing the same from your blu ray player directly to the receiver.

Wow pleeeeease be true. Turtles with Arkham Asylum / City quality combat and story progression would be insane. Insanely good!

Bebop, Rocksteady and normal Krang being missing from the roster, and the presence of Rabbids, should tell you everything you need to know about that game's worth.

Well those three missing was due to them not being in the movie/series.

The rabbids appearing was down to Ubisoft being Ubisoft.

Your overall point still stands, I suppose.

The Turtles had some classic 2D old school games and a couple "good" 3D titles, but never really something this ambitious or large in scope. TMNT might not be the property it was in the late 80's/early 90's, but 1) it still has a strong nostalgia factor, 2) if a game was done well, I'd be surprised to NOT see it do well because the audience from current kids watching the new series to mid 20-somethings reminiscing of their youth...is there, and 3) with the new comic book doing well and movie in the pipeline, a little more hype would be surrounding an A Quality game from a developer with a proven track record. 1-3 kinda form into just one good reason the game would sell in my opinion...

That's because many televisions (my Viera LCD included) do not support 5.1 over the optical out. You only get 2 channel stereo. The only solution is to connect your player/gaming device to your receiver directly.

It was a 25th anniversary product so you'd think they'd have made the effort, they certainly did for Turtles Forever (which, by some amazing coincidence, was a fun piece of Turtles entertainment). Ah well.

Will not be a 4000 series (at least not in the off-the-shelf kind of way). It'll be a heavily customized GPU, as that is how consoles' GPUs are made. Earliest dev-kit rumors suggested a 4000-series card, but personally, I don't see that being the case. Even if it was true, it'd be leaps and bounds ahead of what the current-gen systems can do. I do expect some nice DX11 features, although the card will use OpenGL instead of DX11.

We did see gorgeous global illumination in the Zelda tech demo. Anyone have a video of a game on the Xbox360 or PS3 with similar levels of global illumination and overall detail? I'm curious, is all.

Paul, are you aware that Nickelodeon (Viacom) owns the TMNT IP in its entirety, not just the TV rights, and that Rocksteady is owned by WB? Makes this extremely implausible.

...and along with it, I mentioned the fact that IDW Publishing just worked with DC Comics to create a crossover comic book, so anything is possible. Kratos was in Mortal Kombat on PS3, we've Assassin's Creed hitting SoulCalibur, Sonic in Smash Bros., Rare still making GBA/DS games after being owned by Microsoft, and so on. Of course this has some things against it, but it is possible.

I'm not saying it is. I'm just on the side of the fence that says, "I hope so".

It's possible that the lastest Semi-accurate rumor about the IBM CPU + 7000 series GPU is about the Wii-U. 10k wafers with 50% yield should have some 500,000 for the Wii U for the initial batch. There is no way they need 200,000 Next Box dev kits.

Wii-U

IBM CPU
~7850

I tried to get wsippel to post this, but he felt it was nothing more than what I had already posted. However I disagree because it was still more than what I got and very relevant IMO. So I'm linking this anyway wsippel. :P

New Wii U specs:

Good news. Seemed likely that there'd be a power increase in the latest dev hardware...but it's nice to get some form of confirmation.
