black consoles are lame

I think dark grey would look pretty ace.

Probably has something to do with the 3DS looking exactly the same. The Wii U design we have seen doesn't distance itself from the Wii either.

Especially in light of the original DS having so many revisions/colors/etc, it's easy to see how people could interpret the 3DS as just another revision. The lack of distinction (in design and name) shouldn't be as damning to the Wii since it hasn't had nearly as many flavors as the DS and hence, it's more likely people will realize it's a new product. Still neither the name nor design help it in that respect.

Nintendo's stuck tightrope walking between piggybacking off the previous brand's success and good name while still instilling in the customer that this is in fact a new, unique, must-have product.

I personally think the WiiU design needs to change more than the name. The Wii was sleek and sexy for its time. The WiiU looks like they dropped a Wii into a Fisher-Price machine. It looks like a machine that could have predated the Wii, not succeeded it. Give it some balls and something to distinct it from the Wii, and go ahead and leave the WiiU name so people know it's related.

Secondly, they need to change the visual aspects of the brand. Most importantly, change the font. A new font in the 3DS logo would have done a lot of good in differentiating it from the DS, and Nintendo should avoid making the same mistake with the Wii U while they still can. The brand's colours need to be changed as well, launching with the same glossy white styling (particularly on the controller) will reinforce any impressions that it's an add-on or re-release. Include the colour red in some way, both as it's the only primary colour left after MS and Sony have appropriated green and blue, and also as it's Nintendo's traditional colour anyway. A black console and controller with a red logo and a red disk-slot light would work, as would red game cases.

Sex. Rough sex.

Agree with this as well.

Part of what made the Wii's design so sexy were the sharp angles. It looked sleek, simple, and futuristic all at the same time, especially in comparison to those weird, fat, curvy things that were the original 360/PS3 designs.

The current Wii U case effectively kneecaps that strengths of the original Wii design, and instead has this weird bloated look despite the fact that it's not that large.

I'd love for them to bring back the angular design of the Wii, but maybe a different shape (...cube, perhaps?)

Nintendo Woo!

You heard it here first! ;)

...and last :(

I also desire a black console with a red slot light. I'm bored with the default DS/Wii colour scheme and want something new please.

The naming talk annoys the heck out of me. They can call it a penis mcshitfuck and so long as it had the proper advertising and software that people wanted to buy. With those criteria met, there'd be plenty of proud penis mcshitfuck owners.

Oh come on, just imagine it...black, brushed metal, no mini-disc tray at the top but instead a red-rimmed slot loader where the gamecube control ports once were...hnnnngggg....
It would be extra sexy, but I also thought that the GC was the best looking console ever at the time... shows you what I know :(

Yes...YES.

I've been thinking that Nintendo should use red cases, but the black console with a red lit slot? I love it. It would be beautiful.

Just print Nintendo at the top in white.

Problem is, not only is the logo blue, but Sony uses red cases for their Greatest Hits line on PS3 (yeah, PS2 and GC used black DVD cases, but still...).

I say go with a blue one to match the logo if it stays that way, if Nintendo changes the name and thus the logo, they can use a blu-ray/HD-DVD case with whatever color the logo is.

Like how they brilliantly went with white DVD cases to match the white Wii, I don't know if white HD cases would be that cool, maybe?

My concern with continuing the white and blue colour scheme from the Wii is that there's going a lot of potential confusion about whether it's a brand new console or not if they use exactly the same branding and aesthetics. White cases would further the confusion, black would be insufficiently distinct, blue, green and purple are associated with their competitors, and yellow, brown, orange and pink all have their own problems. Red basically becomes the default option.

Plus the NSMB Wii box was pretty nice.

Looking exactly the same? Looks similar to the DSL but not exactly the same, sure they both share the same clam shell design but they look different enough that people can't say it looks the same. Why aren't people saying the same about the PSV looking the same as the PSP? (sorry for bringing it up on a Nintendo thread)

Cause no one's buying it anyway.

I like the Nintendo U name but I really just hope they change the name at all. I think a red console is a bit too jarring. Like it doesn't fit with a lot of modern household technology. Black console with red LEDs would be slick though.

That's right Nintendo U.
Nu.

All hail the name.

I think it works on many levels. Its all about U.

Wait, that's still happening? I thought that's what all those threads about Nintendo's sales and the Wii U coming out THIS year were from.

That was the earning release.

The investor briefing is taking place tonight around 9 PM EST.

With Nintendo's losses I imagine they would want to reveal/announce something that would soften the blow. I'm guessing (hoping) we hear something about Nintendo Network.

Worth bearing in mind that at the last one, Iwata mentioned that they were changing their strategy regarding the briefings, and making game announcements more in the Nintendo Direct broadcasts, to keep investor briefings more focused on the business. That doesn't really mean anything, just worth keeping your expectations low.

I think what it comes down to more is that all the while the vita looks similar to a psp all the psp revisions looked practically the same had similar dimensions and the same screen size(except the go and that looked nothing like either) and were all just called psp for nearly all marketing.

While for the DS all the revisions looked similar but added a letter or two to the DS name. It's not so much that the 3DS looks like the DS but that it followed that same pattern with DSL DSi DSiXL

It always is for anything that isn't an actual press conference (i.e. E3 or the almost-annual fall Japanese conferences).

what comes around goes around, and what's coming around is ATOMIC PURPLE

Awesome. That was my favorite N64 controller. I don't see purple coming back after the GCN poor sales, but a clear or smoke system would be sweet. I have a clear Wii controller that I used as a gyro mouse for presentations and I get a lot of positive comments about it.

GCN didn't have poor sales because of "purple", but because third-party developers didn't support it very well after the PS2 had been out (and selling gangbusters) for a year.
