Wii U Speculation Thread 2: Can't take anymore of this!!!

Maybe Retro is working on a first-person-vacuumer Luigi's Mansion 3 where the U-pad will act as a vacuum and ghost scanner :D

On an unrelated note, what is going to happen to the E3 Nintendo Network since that will now be the name for Nintendo's online stuff?
On a related note to E3, I kind of want Nintendo to stream their conference on the 3DS. They could make an app for it!

I really doubt they'll stream it to the 3DS. I mean, does MS or Sony even do that for their consoles?

Hi! New here to Neogaf, real big Nintendo fan! :D Cant wait for Wii U.

Anyone else wish they made a cool Battalion Wars sequel for Wii U with high quality online??

Hell yes. So want.

They might consider it. Hopefully, like with the TGS conference, all the media will be available on the eshop afterwards. I still occasionally watch the KI and AC trailers when I'm bored.

My guess would be

Sept/Oct - Japanese launch with Pikmin 3
Nov - US/European/Australian launch with 2D Mario & Pikmin 3.
2 week later - Retro's game

Pikmin sold 1.63M WW, Pikmin 2 sold 1.06M. Last game was 8 years ago, on a system with a tiny user-base.
3 needs to be there for launch if they want this to get as much exposure as possible.

If NSMB WiiU is coming out the same year, I would imagine they would save it for a December release. Putting something like at launch with the console would be detrimental to anything else launching with the console.

I'm honestly more exited about what Monolith are up to more than anything. They seriously outdid themselves with Xenoblade, and I can't wait to see what that UFO business was all about, and what they can do with the power of Wiiwoo in their hands.

They need Mario at launch, maybe Galaxy 3. Pikmin 3 also, and a few weeks after the retro game plus any extra non-hardcore games Nintendo plans to push.

I also think Nintendo will go big with online games at launch to boost up confidence on the new Nintendo Network.

I'm betting it's an RPG.
:P

No, but seriously, they should totally make an MMO for the Wii U.
F2P, at that.
Maybe do like Cartoon Network did, and make it encompass all of Nintendo's franchises.
That would be amazing.

MMOs are worthless to me unless they are F2P so yeah if they did do one I'd hope the same.

But that's not realistic, just hoping for another good JRPG, more than enough in this day and age.

They should be making an Ice-Climbers reboot.

If everyone wants Retro to do StarTropics, I get to have this one thing. Why don't I get the nice things?

Did the Wii one have online? or any multiplayer?

I beat the first Battalion Wars but I don't remember much about it tbh.

I give you points for consistency. :)
Point me to a product that meets the power guidelines that would be required.

IBM, PowerPC Instructions. Out Of Order to meet Wii compatibility. Low power consumption.

That last one is the tough one.

I think my bugaboo here is that I firmly believe that whatever comes out has to be a variant on an existing IBM product, and not a new design, but is still in active development. POWER7 variant doesn't fit - it's too power hungry.

Here is Wikipedia's short list of PowerPC processor lines:

Dig a little. Tell me what fits.

You keep your non-SMT "ARM cores" out of my Wii U's CPU. :P

And yes the POWER7 at face value is too power hungry, but I think you're overestimating what a modified version would put out. Going back to info from the previous thread one 4-way SMT core clocked at 3.6Ghz is ~23w. I also saw that someone had estimated the P7 core with L2 to be about the same size as Xenon's core. So once they remove/build up without the unnecessary functions I think it would see a decent reduction in TDP and work well in a console.

Hey another new guy here, glad to leave the lurking behind and be able to finally take part!

I've got all 3 modern consoles, a psp, ds and 3ds, so I don't consider myself too attached to one system, but as a long-time gamer I'm really excited to see Nintendo coming to the HD era and (apparently) pursuing 3rd party developers aggressively.

It's the best of both worlds for me: Nintendo is still being Nintendo - they've got their crazy new innovation and are doing things their own way, but they're also enabling the system to be receptive to 3rd party developers via processing power and standard controls. Win!

I shook my head when they stuck with cartridges. I shook my head at gamecube's minidiscs. I like where they went with the Wii, but shook my head at their loss of "big" 3rd party franchises and therefore "hardcore" gamers.

I'm not shaking my head now. I'm very excited to see what they can do with this thing, and since I love Nintendo's game library, I'm happy to see them take steps in what I consider the right direction: parity with the other two, but still their own brand of unique gameplay possibilities.

And man, it feels good to be able to post. =)

The Wii U is definitely stricking all the right cords.
Good power
BluRays
Decent Networking
More standard controller

All while still being uniquely Nintendo.

Should be pretty interesting.

My bet is on an HD Twilight Princess at or very near launch. Nintendo will have at least a handful of remakes in the launch window (every system since the GBA has) and Twilight Princess makes the most sense:

-N64 games would have to be completely remade, so they're out
-Iwata has already mentioned that graphics are an important element of The Legend of Zelda
-The Wind Waker has barely aged, while Twilight Princess is borderline unplayable due to blurriness
-At least some number of TP HD assets already exists (E3 demo)
-Twilight Princess is the second best selling (3D) LoZ behind Ocarina of Time, which also recently received an update

Biggest hurdle I suppose is that TP is already playable on the Wii U, but that didn't stop the New Play Control games. Also, The Wind Waker will be the only 3D Zelda missing from the Wii U, so that may bump it up the list, so to speak.

Unless I'm mistaken, there weren't any remakes at launch for Gamecube or Wii, at least not from Nintendo. It doesn't seem like something they like to do in the launch window. If HD remakes happen, I'd expect them around 2014.

Then again, this is Nintendo's first HD console, so who knows? I'd say Metroid Prime was more likely if it hadn't already been remade for Wii.

I wouldn't expect any HD remakes at launch.
They'll want fresh experiences.

I also wouldn't expect them to be retail when they happen.
I could totally see them being a DD thing.

The city tech demo is impressive, but it does leave me wondering about the implications it has for games.

The only application I could muster is 360 FMV scenes, possibly?

For most actiony games, there's not a lot of use.
It would be good for exploration games, however.
Being able to zoom in and look around any part of an area could lead to some neat puzzles.

When was Blu-Ray support confirmed/announced? I thought Nintendo was going their own proprietary discs.....

i don't care if it's retail or DD, I just want my HD ports!

EDIT: Yeah, Ace. Those won't be Blu-Rays, it's just going to be something with high storage capacity (and support HD formats, of course.)

They are, in a sense.
But they're still Blu Rays.
Just like the Wii used DVDs and the GC used Mini DVDs.
It won't play BR movies (at least, not that we know of) but it's the same technology.

4GB of RAM confirmed from the Retro thread?

No, that was a joke because they hired someone from Crytek, a company that said all Next Gen consoles should have 8GB of RAM.

Wii had the New Play Control "remakes," and I thought GBA launched after GCN. Apologies if mistaken.

its based of bluray tech, laser and lense type, just not capable of bluray movie playback. Just like the Wii isnt a DVD player. Least thats what I got out of it.

There's an unknowable cost/benefit analysis here. Would extensive surgery on the POWER7 be worth the design and testing cost in comparison to minor to medium surgery needed to build a SOC with 476FP cores leading to a almost but not quite off the shelf GPU+memory controller+GDDR5?

You know my postion, and I believe that I know yours currently. It will be interesting to see how this all falls together later this year.

Actually an Ice Climbers mmo with some light world-building gameplay could be a killer app.
Building up igloo towns and then waging war on neighboring clans. With hammers, tight platforming, and fast action. I can already imagine how euphoric the CTF mode will be.

Ok thanks! I thought I had missed an additional announcement. This thread moves fast!

I also want HD remakes/re-releases of Wii games like Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Super Smash Brothers Melee.

I'd say chances are pretty darn good Nintendo will address that very thing at E3. I suspect it will be a major part of their online "Nintendo E-Shop" service ie: downloadable HD re-releases.

You have great mental faculties. I would never have imagined this, if you hadn't first... I want this game!

Speaking of Batallion Wars earlier.
I'd love to see Nintendo take it on like Sony did with MAG.
Just a giant online game with ranks and strategy. Would be awesome.

My best case scenario for F-Zero would be to have Criterion make it.

It just feels so perfect for the Burnout guys to make F-Zero.

Very nice idea!

In a similar vein, I'm absolutely hooked on Minecraft. The touch tablet controller is just perfect for all the crafting goodies and ui.

They could even do a vs. mode with 1 player having the game streamed to the touch controller and another player using the Wii controls(or an additional touch screen controller).

Has anyone heard if Notch plans on getting Minecraft onto the system? Seems like a great showcase for the touch controller.

Or will Lego City Stories be our closest/best bet?

Boy they're gonna have a job coming up with names for all these new Mario games this era.

New Super Mario Bros. 3DS
New Super Mario Bros. Mii/U
Super Mario 3D World
Super Mario 3D Land 2
New Super Mario Bros. 3D Galaxy

It'll be a mouthful unless they drop the naming scheme (and the reused assets).

Personally, I prefer HAL and IS, two very underrated studios. Although the latter has been REALLY disappointing for a while now.

Pushmo says "No"...

As an actual fan of IS, Pushmo, however good it is, isn't what I asked for.

This makes me want to kill a stripper.

I've heard of them. But I'm not going to give out any credit until I've actually played them. To my knowledge, there isn't much known about either game.

You say your a fan of the studios but you are unsure of their upcoming games....Maybe you are just disheartened. That is understandable, urge to kill a stripper is subsiding.

they need to stop making stuff like femblem and advwars and just make paper mario games for me.

Seriously WTF. Grabs gun!

starting to expect we'll get Wii U at an early than expected time.

Given porting is apparently easy on the machine, i think Nintendo will want to get the machine out and in the hands of devs so that they can garner 3rd party efforts for 2012 xmas and help establish themselves as soon as possible before we start getting into the NextBox / Playstation+ hype zone.
Nintendo won't release it until they have their own AAA titles ready to go at launch, since they've acknowledged that that was one of the biggest reasons the 3DS launch was so rocky was a lack of AAA first-party titles.

Yeah I thought about that too. The naming scheme they have now doesn't give Nintendo much flexibility for sequels.

I want this so badly.
