This is all we know right now!

Yes!
You are on the right track.
The idea with the WiiU controller allows us play the entire game in wondrous HD without the clutter of a HUD. This should be translated to the game box design as well.

That's a brilliant point.

Who is more dangerous?

A Nintendo Ninja

A Sony Samurai

A Microsoft Mercenary

looking at how much leaks we got from Nintendo so far... its the Nintendo Ninja... ;)

I hope you don't mind but I borrowed your template to work on this:

It's not that great (I have very little skill with editing images :P) but whatever. I hope Nintendo tries to make their cases smaller.
Positives of smaller cases include:
-Economical/"Green"
-Differentiates from Wii boxes
-Less clutter for my shelf
-Publishers will maybe try to make simpler, cleaner, more organized box art.

I think if they use a square format the WiiU (or whatever) banner will be on the left (as on 3ds boxes)

But I would really appreciate smaller sleeves, also like the idea of paper sleeves with embossed logos.

I just imagine it something in the line of no top banner, just a watermark on the top saying WiiU. More space for impressive/or an crap boxert art.

Yes please. Also, the backs of Wii boxes have been way too boring, it's painful. Especially in Europe, where in most cases even to logo is just ordinary block letters. Needs to be like Gamecube again, looks far better in the shelves, especially if you have relatively many games.
The 3DS boxes aren't a great indicator though and neither is the WiiU design that already looked way too similar to the Wii at E3. :/

Too little brand recognizability. Nintendo would be pummeled by scores of angry moms that complain the pc game they bought doesn't work on their nintendo. So never going to happen I'm afraid.

wiiu.co.uk redirects to NOE.

To be honest, this is just standard procedure to avoid external parties from drawing in people looking for an official wii u site.

They've reserved the URLs to ensure people go to the right place.

I just had a thought.. Do you think there's a possibility that there could be some Wacom style functionality in the controller? By hovering over the screen with the pen you could control a cursor on the TV. This would make something like Canvas Curse feasible on the big screen, and when you switched to the small screen it would play DS style.

Just a thought.

Wacom has replaced my mouse all together (besides gaming), So i would like to see some wacom functions like hover, pressure, tilt/pitch. What are the capabilities of resistive screens?

Those Metroid V and Pikmin 3 boxarts are making the sex with my eyes.

Nice blend of the boilerplate stuff that has to be there, but differentiated from the Wii boxes.

I do hate (although I understand) how the US boxart for first party titles has to have everything in 3 languages on the back of the box. Clutters it right up.

That's a point, Wacom tablets don't come cheap. They usually start at around £50

They sell to a niche though... I think with a contract for tens of millions, the proximity component would be quite cheap... I just don't think it's something Nintendo would consider, and Wacom possibly wouldn't like the thought of someone writing uPad drivers for the PC or something.. even though obviously it would be hundreds of times inferior to their cintiq tablet line, I can't imagine them wanting to see something like that happen.

As far as I know, resistive screens can only detect a single [x,y] coordinate and nothing in terms of pressure or anything else. However, it could be coupled with a stylus that senses pressure (which may increase the likelihood of people [kids] damaging their screen by pressing harder than they actually need to). Another route would be to use the circle pads and/or buttons in conjunction with the stylus.

i thought the original ds screen could detect pressure but nintendo never let the function be used and dropped it from later models?

I like Alazz's Metroid box. It reminds me of the Games for Windows boxes, which I always thought were the best of the four last gen (GFW, 360, Wii, and PS3).

this is a 2009 article, maybe we'll get a multi-touch tablet?

Whoops, I take that all back then. Never knew that, nor do I understand how it could work, but I guess it does/did. (I Googled around and found a homebrew app called Colors for the DS which utilized pressure sensitivity.)

In the conference call for Final 3rd Quarter Sales for fiscal quarter ended December 31, 2011, Ubisoft just said that they will have 6 titles on the console (unknown if it will be for launch day though), and they believe Wii U will bring fresh air in the industry. They will provide games for core gamers and casual gamers simultaneously.

This perhaps, while it's not that interesting, should have its own thread.

^ Good!

Oh, and a multi platform release won't indicate the time of the Wii U's release. That game could be launch window, for all we know, or indeed before the Wii U comes out.

Personally, I reckon we're getting the system in August or November. Nowhere in between.

I love the small Wii U case idea. I've secretly wanted a ps1/Dreamcast size cd jewel case made with the DS' hard plastic for years now! It is the ultimate form factor for CD based media storage. PS3 was close, but next gen I hope some or all of the big three get it right.

What about a blu-ray case (thinner, rounder) but not as tall? Like DS or CD case height?

I'm placing bets for late september or november

Sakaguchi on Wii U:

"The Wii U will bring us new opportunities and above all new development prospects. Personally, this is exactly the kind of machine that is able to surprise me. I am sure there will be concepts that I never thought and innovative ideas that will advance the game." (Google Translator)
