Wii U Speculation thread IV: Photoshop rumors and image memes

Ah, Earthbound. Those Beatles tunes and whatnot have doomed that title and hence the franchise in the west. How is that not considered parody or whatever, though? Damn shame...

I was trying to find some Wii U is doomed articles to liven this thread up.

But guess what... I can't find any.

The Wii U is doomed articles.... are also doomed.
They're probably holding their powder, getting ready for next week. My bet is that there's some Media League of Nintendoom that has monthly meetings to decide on the narrative they're all going with. Next week should be fun!

That might happen if Nintendo focuses on those and neglects the others I mentioned. I don't think they'll do that though. Those games would likely be relegated to sizzle reels, with maybe one demo on stage at E3 to demonstrate the controller. But they definitely will be there in some fashion, but I don't think that they will change the perception people have of Nintendo's press conference for the worse, the only people who would keep that mindset are probably beyond convincing anyway.

Here's hoping.

I agree with you, it's just pre and post E3 is going to be freaking nuts with accusations such as my first reply to you.

0. Nintendo isn't going to make Retro develop something that won't sell.

It's between a New IP, new Zelda and new Metroid, in that order.

98% sure it's a new IP.

Agreed. The launch of a system is about the most perfect time to release a new high profile IP that I can think of honestly. Not that they can't sell at any other moment in the cycle, but it seems to be the hottest time for completely new products of high quality.

Will their E3 conference be like years past or can we expect a new presentation style with a bit more life? Stuff like Heavy Metal, guns, explosions. Maybe Iwata comes out on a tank?

Wouldn't it be more effective if it was unveiled earlier still? If it isn't a launch title, I wouldn't expect them to, but if we're talking the very beginning, they should be marketing it at least somewhat by now.

Yep, that's basically the only certainty going into Nintendo's E3.

I'm personally hoping they make a new IP that would serve as the spiritual successor to Metroid Prime, I think that would also fit the "something everyone wants us to do" criteria.

What was the last really solid RPG Nintendo has made?

I want that to be the new IP. I'm nuts for RPGs.

GUYS GUYS I HAVE SOME AWESOME NEWS ABOUT THE WII U!

You won't believe it but..*cough*
I'm under NDA, so I'm risking my life here saying this.
So here I go...
The Wii U will play video games, and...and it has a controller with a touch screen.
I know none of you guys saw this coming, so just calm down, don't freak out..because the Wii U has HD graphics.
Its okay guys, Nintendo is going next gen with this Wii U.
We can all celebrate and breathe this news in slowly. We'll make it.

What the FFFFFFUUU!

No no I'm not dismissing the premise of the other games besides the Wii U branded ones, it's just that "bad Nintendo news" tends to outweigh good ones. For some reason I get the nagging feeling that if we do get amazing first and third party games, people will just look to the Wii U Music, Wii U Play, etc, and chant the same "Nintendo's abandoned the hardcore, headed for casual with Wii U" shit.

This is true. If ¾ of Nintendo's titles were traditional games and ¼ were non-action titles that were either Mii-infested or were non-gaming related (fitness, animals, brain teasers, et al), a lot of people would be convinced that most of what Nintendo presented was "casual garbage" (even if the latter category were largely decent titles with good polish).

It appears I have been living under a rock. I'm going to go buy this Xenoblade now...

God, if there has ever been I time I've felt out of the loop, it's now. My school's taken us of the country (Singapore) for a few months so my access to a solid flow of gaming news isn't the greatest.

Oh god, it can't get any worse than this.

I'd say 60% Metroid, 25% Donkey Kong, 10% Zelda, 5% New IP
They said it was something everyone wants them to do, so logically it would be Metroid wouldn't it, another Zelda would be too soon.

Ohh. Ohhhhh. I was getting a bit confused at this talk of percentages. I though people were talking about percentage balance of different kinds of game (like "5%" of games shown will be New IPs). So I was confused at first, thinking that you were suggesting that 60% of Nintendo's E3 presentation would be Metroid games.

Xenoblade is my "break glass in case if emergency" game. I have it and the bonus controller sealed and in storage, waiting for that particular time when I need to get absolutely lost for months at a time in a jRPG.

It should be -_-
I'd rather Retro's first HD game not star a flea-ridden, tie-wearing gorilla with a banana addiction.
Same, I'd much rather have a Metroid Prime 4.

Same, I'd much rather have a Metroid Prime 4.

Here here.
New 2D game for the 3DS.
New 3D Action game for the Wii U (staring Anthony Higgs)
A new Pinball game for both.
And finally, a new Metroid cartoon made by Genndy Tartakovsky.

If I recall correctly, DKCR sold more than the 3 Metroid Prime games combined. Hopefully, they're smart enough to produce a sequel at some stage.

It will happen.
It's just not what Retro is making right now.

I don't think so. If I were Nintendo I'd try to get Zelda back to at least a mid gen cycle. If Retro was working on Zelda, it doesn't mean it will be a launch title.

To be honest, I don't see Retro working on anything other than either MP4 or a new IP, so 50/50 between those two for me, I'd be happy either way.

Also, what do you guys think of Scribblenauts on Wii U? I think it would work quite well.

Honestly I'm expecting a totally new ip or a Zelda title.

"As you know, we have already collaborated with Retro for the Metroid Prime series in the past," Miyamoto told Wired. "And I think when we talk about any other franchise, Zelda might be a possible franchise for that collaboration."

Source

Only reason I'm leaning towards new ip is because Retro is said to have been working on something new before picking up DKCR. I just can't find the interview where they mention putting a project aside to work on DKCR.

I never got a chance to play it on the DS, it would be even better on Wii U.

You don't need Retro to make a DKCR sequel. You do need Retro to make a HD title compelling to Western hardcores.

Something they have no recent success doing on a large scale. They do have success at 2D platformers.

I'm not being entirely serious and I'm pretty sure they're not working on a sequel right now, but really, just because people here want something else, NCL may want or need them to produce something with a more proven track record than potential hardcore game X.

There would be no point in showing off a two new Marios (if we're to believe a Wii U game will be shown) and a new DKCR at the same time.

I would bet ANY AMOUNT OF MONEY that there's gonna be more DKC at E3 this year. Paypal. You don't make the second best-selling DK game of all-time and spend 2-3 years building an platforming engine and just not pick up on it again.

I still think NST is developing one for 3DS, they haven't had anything released since 2010, around the same time DKCR released, so I think it would make sense if they then started work on DK 3D Land or something.

Retro needs to make Diddy Kong Racing 2 for Wii U with David Wise composing the music.

Come on guys, DO IT!

Or Star Fox, but the former would get my vote, plus Mario Kart 7 gave them some experience.

Gotta strike while that iron is hot. I bet you're right

I don't think it will be Metroid. I'd imagine Nintendo wants to give that franchise a break after the "success" of Other M.

I say Zelda because of that cock tease by Miyamoto and the "a project everyone wants us to do" rumour. As well as DKCR sold, I'm not sure a sequel is something everyone wants them to do.

We'll see DKC make a return, though. Maybe as a 3DS game, that would be sweet.
