Wii U Speculation thread IV: Photoshop rumors and image memes

I already said I'll believe it when I see it. And even then I don't expect it at launch. We saw SMG at E3 06 and it wasn't at launch.
They don't need Mario at launch.

Understood.

I actually still believe it's a 3D Mario and wouldn't be surprised at all if it's for Spring/Summer. Didn't the Galaxy games come out during that time?

...
I know it's way off-topic, but I really need feedback.

Looks great, but I think it takes up too much vertical space. I would crop it so just the eyes, nose, and title are visible. The other slight change would be to have more black under the right side of the "II" so it pops more, but that's just nitpicking.

Can anyone type up a dream list of Wii U titles that people are hoping haven't yet been announced for the platform due to NDAs?

FF15
SMRPG 2
HD remakes of classic games
new console Pokemon game based around BW2
Contra
Next gen castlevania
LP3
Ominusha
Darkstalkers
RE spinoff

holy shit, how many times is that going to be posted..

I'm expecting a demo of the game, release in 2013.

Just like Galaxy back in '06. First shown at E3 '06, released in november 2007.

Could be, but I also would not be at all surprised if they have it ready this year.

It could be a sort of one-two Mario punch that Nintendo is planning.
- 2D Mario title on Launch Day
- 3D Mario title for Holiday 2013, opposite PS720 launches.

Makes more and more sense, now that I think of it. Nintendo would get to milk its first 3D HD Mario title for not one but two E3s. (although I'd love to see the 3D one in November or December)

Which is very wird about that interview is that Miyamoto didn't say that in the video. The interview was posted in the online edition of the newspaparer BUT there is an interview with him in their print edition (I wil try to get that as soon as possible).

We'll definitely see Mario at E3, but I don't know about it being a launch title. Wouldn't that make third parties stress more if they have to compete with a Mario game at launch this holiday season?

Well, this is the biggest news Wii U threads 3 & 4 have had.

Nintendo making a Mario game isn't really news at all unless it at least has a title. I'd argue that the Retro hire was bigger news, as well as Nintendo's declaration that they wouldn't present at Gamescom.

Third parties? I just don't see Nintendo releasing a Mario game at launch.
"We couldn't get a foothold at launch because you were too busy ensuring it's a healthy platform!"

Nintendo shouldn't pay much heed to this line of thinking after the 3DS fiasco.

A 3D Mario at launch? Even taking for granted that a small team was working on pre-production while SM3DL was being frantically whipped up, that would still be a damn short cycle considering the presumed scope of such a game. Although, Nintendo seems to be pulling able hands from any of their expansive network of internal studios these days, so I guess anything is possible.

I believe the real question is what has EAD Tokyo Group 1 been up to? I've leaned towards Star Fox myself. Under their new development strategy (the aforementioned farming out of certain tasks), Q games might do some of the programming, and some of the key guys behind the original Star Fox might serve as consultants in Kyoto. The director of Star Fox 64, Takao Shimizu, serves as the head of EAD Tokyo 1 now, and they still have alot of the talent which worked on Super Mario Galaxy 1 (which featured gorgeous space environments).

An expansive update on the franchise would certainly help Wii U sell to the Nintendo enthusiast crowd, which is clearly the demographic they will be targetting at first (the quotes on expect a higher price tag, etc). Imagine online multiplayer: see your buddy's face on the DRC complete with cockpit overlays to "put you in the game." I mean, I just cannot take seriously that the fate of the franchise rested on a, quite frankly, graphically unimpressive remake/port, which lacked the online play that hardcore gamers cannot make any more clear they value. 64 3d must have just been the appetizer for the franchise's rebirth on Wii U. I hope to the goddess I'm right.

I think Nintendo knows that they have to "pick their poison" at this point, and they may well be going with the safe thing, opening with full firepower instead of relying on third parties to bring the true system sellers.

Speaking of Darksiders II, I need you guys' opinion on something.

As you might know, I'm working on the OT for that game. I made a banner, and I want to know what you guys think.

I'll delete the banner once I get enough feedback, I don't want to leave this around for everyone to see before the OT is opened.

I know it's way off-topic, but I really need feedback.

Here's what I think you could improve:

  • Use the official logo, it's a bit grittier than the text you use and creates a more unified theme. If you have access to Gamespress, you can probably find a large logo file there, otherwise here are two versions:

    http://www.darksiders.com/images/bkg_agegate_logo.png
    http://www.darksiders.com/images/logo.png

  • If you choose to keep the typeface you have chosen, the purple color in the logo can in my opinion be changed from #870bc1 (R: 135 G: 11 B: 93) to #7c08de (R: 124 G: 8 B: 222). It looks better I think, less intense.

  • Change the typeface for the text below the logo, whatever that is it doesn't look good and is kinda difficult to read. I can suggest either Galena™ Small Caps or Pompei™ New Regular Small Caps, two typefaces I use from time to time.

  • Add some vibrance to the main art, a value of 50% equaled a nice result (in Photoshop CS6). Also, add some cyan and magenta to the main art, a value of 10 should be nice (for midtones).
Else than that I think it looks awesome.

They didn't release anything worthwhile at launch for the 3DS at launch. What did they have that would attract gamers and casual gamers? I don't recall anything special from Nintendo or Third Parties.

All they need to do is release some good games. This doesn't necessarily mean they have to release a Mario game at launch. They also need a Wii Sports equivalent for the Wii U. The 3DS has none of those.

True, but they can do it with any of their franchises not just Mario.

The big question is: will it be the big new Mario title from EAD Tokyo?

I'd say yes.

Edit: just read about the Pikmin thing. Hnnnnnggg

Right. If Nintendo relies on 3rd parties, they are not going to sell any consoles. Better to take the sure thing.

True, but they can do it with any of their franchises not just Mario.

Indeed. I think they have different paths of varying intensity that they can take:
1) "Damn the Third Parties!": 3D Mario, second-tier titles, Wii _____, etc.
2) "Let's Share the Spoils!": 2D Mario, one second-tier title, Wii ______, etc
3) "No, I Insist - After You, My Good Sirs!": No mario, second-tier first-party titles, etc.

Each path tells is something about how confident and risk-averse they are.. confident about themselves, confident about third-parties, scared of a 3DS repeat, unconcerned of a repeat, etc. It'll be very, very telling to those of us who are paying attention.

Okay.. I must say: I'm pretty psyched that Nintendo is going last this year. They get to tweak their script and be ready for any nasty surprises that the other two may have planned for Monday the 4th.

Kinda like a political campaign: you want your convention bounce after the the other guy has had his.

Path 2 and 3 seem more likely. I can see 2 happening, although I'm more inclined to go with 3 since Nintendo wants 3rd parties on board. They just need to release two or three good titles including the Wii ____ game.

Going last? They haven't announced date and venue of their media briefing, have they? I saw the threads for Microsoft's and Sony's respective press briefing, but nothing about Nintendo. Technically, they could have it on the 3rd of June as E3 technically starts then.

For their own sake I hope you're right because going last isn't going to do Nintendo any favors this time. It would actually work against them.

A Sunday?

I can't ever remember that happening. It'd be interesting.

Nintendo doesn't give two shits about MS or Sony. They're gonna go at the same time they always go.

I disagree. Even if MS and Sony were lying and did do some kind of reveal of their next consoles, it wouldn't hurt Nintendo since very little has been revealed up to this point as well.

Yeah. During the last years Nintendo usually was Tuesdays morning. With Microsoft been the only one of the "big 3" to go on Monday.

So far, the only change has been Sony been the same day as Microsoft.

Okay, I'll change the font for the sub-text, but no way am I paying 25$ for FONTS.

2d multiplayer Mario will bring in the casuals. ::shrug::

Just give it challenging secret areas and some sort of online functionality and I'll be happy.
I'd prefer 3d Mario more than anything

Not gonna happen.

Conference on Sunday would rob them of the opportunity to respond to "surprises" thrown at them from Sony and/or Microsoft.

Imagine Sony and/or Microsoft showing "bullshit" cg trailers. (Wich NeoGAF would praise as 100% possible ingame graphics, ofcourse. Because thats what happens everytime ;) )

When their last, they can say "Unlike our competitors, our material is all ingame and not pre rendered videos wich are unlikely to be archivable, like in the past!"

I'm not even talking about MS and Sony unveiling or even hinting at new consoles. I think they would be stupid to do so.

What I'm talking about is An MS conference showing off their upcoming games and more stuff for the incredibly popular Kinect, a Sony conference showing off their upcoming games, most of which are the same as the 360's upcoming games, and cross functionality with the Vita and PS3.

And then there's Nintendo. Shouting "Buy our new system!" with mostly the same games we just saw in the previous two conferences, and a controller that's doing exactly what Sony just showed off the Vita can do and still isn't as cool as Kinect.

Going last this year is going to make Nintendo look like the "Hey me too guys! ME TOO!" company unless they have some crazy secret planned out.

Mario + Pikmin + WiiUSports would be a solid launch combo. I'm sure they'll also have some big third party exclusive to go along with it.

I'd hope Nintendo has learned from the 3DS where they let third parties have the launch entirely to themselves, only for nothing besides Street Fighter.

That's not really a good argument at all IMO. Vita and PS3 don't have the "exact" level of functionality. Non-gamers jump on new, interesting things, so touting Kinect as a concern doesn't work. About the only legitimate thing is seeing most, not all, of the same games and even then we don't know how much the new interface will change that. And new console hype always makes a difference.

And we also forget that Miyamoto is working on a brand new IP. There's no evidence that his new IP won't release by end of the year.

Same games? Do you have info the rest of us haven't? :p

And I doubt the controller only does exactly what the Vita does, it's pretty silly to compare the two.

Considering the relative success of 2D and 3D Marios over the last decade, I think you've got them in the wrong places here.
