Yeah. But "next gen" does have other definitions as well, even if they are a bit silly. It would be dumb to ignore that fact, just as it would be dumb to state with any certainty which definition he's personally using.

More often, used in marketingspeak and console wars taunting.. of very little other use, except perhaps to group market competitors in analysis discussion.

Well, in 2010 (two years later) the 1st/3rd party ratios were:

~52ish% for Wii 3rd Party.
~80ish% for Xbox 360 3rd party.

I don't know what the hard numbers were, and I'm lazy, so I will insert arbitrary variables.

Xbox 360 software:hardware ratio = 8.1
Wii software:hardware ratio = 6.9

∴ Xbox 360 3rd party to hardware ratio = 6.4:1
∴ Wii 3rd party to hardware ratio = 3.6:1

Xbox 360 sales = 40m
Wii sales = 75m

∴ Xbox 360 3rd party sales = 256m
∴ Wii 3rd party sales = 270m

…huh. I was expecting to come out with a result that had the 360 much higher than the Wii. Then again, Almost all the numbers I entered were guesses (the Wii sales were based on various shipment reports in 2010, but the Xbox 360 sales at the time are a WAG*, as are the S:H ratios). Please, somebody fill in actually correct numbers and make me feel dumber. :D :D :D


* edit: means Wild-Ass Guess, so please don't take numbers here as fact save for those numbers that I've explicitly indicated as fact. All equal signs are really squiggly at a microscopic level.

I feel that using "next-gen" as a sign of something's power is becoming outdated quickly, as the gap between each console's capabilities grows larger, so I think we need to stop using it soon. I don't think it's too dumb to assume he was talking in terms of succession- he might have considered there's still folks who think that the Wii U is a Wii with a tablet controller, which is certainly possible (especially amongst the kinds of morons who'd still watch something like hiphopgamer, lol).
 
I still think Nintendo will get a pretty powerful GPU and CPU that surpasses current consoles for cheap.

GameCube's GPU and CPU were pretty state of the art for 2001, and that console launched at $200.

I don't believe this idea that they can't get decent graphics tech in the console without going insane with the price. I think they could strike a good balance between tech and price. Especially since a fuckload of manufacturing companies would love to have Nintendo as a client.

It seems to be where they're going with the Wii U. The problem is people are going to compare it to the 720/PS4. We know it won't end well because of this.

In that case, we just need better terms for discussion to delineate groupings and timelines. As annoying as it may be, it's a convenient term.
 
I hope next gen the media learns to stop talking about games being released in the present as next gen. The only time it makes sense is if you are talking about current PC graphics being a indicator of what next gen consoles could be like.

Oh, I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm just pointing out that it is indeed an assumption (a pretty safe one), not a fact.

Well, it seems more like their console will be less modest and more customized/optimized, like the GameCube was.. without breaking the bank. After the Wii, it comes as a bit of a relief.

Actual evidence? If so, then I can understand your position. I haven't seen that, however. The problem to me is that his info seems so in line with the frontrunner rumors and also Nintendo's historical approach, that it's hard to argue against him if you've read up.

For example: Nintendo threw some fixed function hardware in the 3DS, and we know that some (that texture logic) would aid in Wii BC. I even remember an IGN article around the Gamecube days which mentioned Nintendo's emphasis on lighting and obviously there's the Wii U Zelda demo also, which apparently featured instantaneous and dramatic adjustments in lighting at the press of a virtual button. Those investor q&as have also disclosed quite a bit of info to draw from. Basically, he obviously knows alot about Nintendo whether or not he has an insider source, I simply haven't seen any verification that he does. Wii U hype all the same.

Seems silly, but that gets annoying (and sometimes throws me off). I mean, if it's out now, why is in "next-gen"?

Who knows, but the gaming media is full of illogical people.

My prediction is when the WiiU is shown a load of gaming sites will report that Nintendo is finally next-gen.

That's cool. Let's carry on with the discussion then. Have you thought of any other effects which might benefit from fixed function hardware? Things so common pretty much every game would find them useful? To say nothing about whether or not devs choose to implement them or go for the quick and dirty port+controller features route...

I've been thinking that they may beef up the TMUs or replace them entirely with something which would aid in flipper emulation. This may mean a lower amount and very different config then the RV700 standard.

Yeah the latter two weren't dramatically different for the most part so compared to how the next Sony/MS consoles are shaping up, I included both as a range for Wii U.

Xbox had a very wide power gap (compared to DC/PS2) that wasn't totally exploited. It's very plausible that it happens again.

My gap in tech knowledge keeps me from proposing proper ideas on how exactly these functions may play out. Like I mentioned on B3D, my previous take was based on "primitive" ideology. People like wsippel and blu would be able to suggest how that would work in a current environment.

From the bare numbers, it looks as if the PS2 is ~50% faster (cpu 200MHz → 294MHz, gpu 100MHz → 147MHz, memory 16MB+8MB+2MB → 32MB+4MB+2MB). Granted, bare numbers lie badly. :O

So what can we say about the power of the WiiU from all the speculations?
Considering Nintendo wanted to make it port friendly with current games...

Running current non-optimized middleware will result in on-par performances with the HD twins
Running current but optimized middleware gives it a 50-75% power increase over the HD twins
Running a proprietary engine will offer 100-150% performance increase over the HD twins allowing it to be able to run next gen games.

We'll see. For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure the the hacked together tech demo at E3 2011 ran at 720p with no anti-aliasing, so you might not get 1080p :P.
