Wii U Speculation thread IV: Photoshop rumors and image memes

See, this is why we need a website with an UPCOMING EVENTS sidebar that is always visible and lets you know exactly when the next Nintendo event is.

True. I was kinda hoping for a daily-updated, bulletpointed list in the OP so that folks could check it from time to time.

It's sneaking-up on a lot of folks. Outside of this thread, I don't see it mentioned very often.

Be prepared for a troll surge next week.

I expect trolls to be in full force. I'm just hoping we get one relevant piece of information.

Yeah, next week is gonna be crazy. I am especially interested in the Q&A, I assume some investor anyway has read these rumors about Wii U being technically inferior to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. If Wii U specs are not released during the presentation, I hope someone asks about them. Even if Nintendo replies with "we don't focus on hardware", it will certainly bring much speculation. And they can't keep dodging questions about the specifications forever, eventually someone is gonna reverse engineer the Wii U to see exactly how powerful it is.

And as I mentioned before, AMD has having an IR event today: http://ir.amd.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=74093&p=irol-EventDetails&EventId=4723953

I don't expect much from it, but it's their largest IR event (not counting the 2012 Annual Meeting of Stockholders) before E3, and to at least reconfirm they are developing the GPU for Wii U could be nice for both investors and customers to know.

Interesting points. I'm hoping investors press them about the hardware just so we have some more insight on it.

That was months ago! I remember you telling me that I was getting quite close, and I remember telling you that I'd need to brainstorm about it some more.

Man.. I used to yell that the NES was "cheating" when I was a young'un.. but now the computer will really be able to cheat? Amazing!

The side effect is that this manner of cheating will further focus the system on single player and not on local multiplayer, which every game ever made should support, damnit! >:O

Well, there should be local support in at least every multiplayer game

Oh, snap. I remember back in the day when I was a pretty massive AMDroid (I chatted via IM regularly with folks who did hardware design and PR on stuff like the K7, and the website I made had like five to ten thousand regular visitors!). Almost met Anand Lal Shimpi for tea once. :D

Part of me is still pushing for the little guy, even if Sanders was a right twat now and then, in retrospect. :)

Apparently, Shadowrun Returns won't be ported on Wii U (nor on the other home systems !), according to an interview of Jordan Weisman, the co-founder of FASA & one of the creator of this setting

No consoles versions of the kickstarted turn-based old-school RPG are planned.

Where does Shadowrun Returns go from here? Are we going to see a Wii U version? We're only half-joking about that.

No, we are not taking Shadowrun Returns to consoles because the type of RPG we want to make just won't play well there. The additional money has allowed us to add a second city to the game and lot of additional depth and content; things like more characters, more props, more locations within the two cities and more stories.

Considering the overwhelming response, how does this change the perception of the game within the publishing industry? Fans definitely want a new Shadowrun. Do you think Microsoft and Sony will want this game on their respective platforms as well?

As overwhelming as the response has been, it is important to remember that in the context of the industry, Shadowrun Returns is still a game with a budget, which is less than most competitive XBLA games, Steam games or even some higher-end mobile games. That said, it is clear that the Shadowrun fans have been waiting for a game like this, and we are very excited to make it.

Just curious if you've seen Republique, a proposed iOS title from Ryan Payton's Camouflaj studio. It's also on Kickstarter. Any thoughts about that title, and direction they want to go in bringing a hardcore experience to mobile devices and tablets? In a way, it and Shadowrun Returns are cut from the same cloth, yes?

I met with Ryan last year about Republique, and my sense of it was that it had more in common with some of my earlier Transmedia work, like "I Love Bees" and more specifically the "Cathy's Book" trilogy rather than the RPG structure of Shadowrun, but in general, I do think the hardcore game audience is large enough on mobile devices for it to become a viable platform, especially in combination with PC and Mac like we are doing for Shadowrun Returns.

Great to hear. We look forward to seeing the game.

A real pity, because this franchise is huge, i've played this pen & paper rpg a long time ago, the background is original, a mix of cyberpunk & fantasy, i would have loved to see this on Wii U :(

I think i'll definitively create a facebook "I'm a PC & Nintendo fanboy ! I want your indie/revival/kickstarted/crowdfounded old school PC title to come to the Wii U damn !!!!" to pressure a bit these studios about the subject :p

Seriously, I'm fine with PC only versions of those big Kickstarter games. Just to see Shadowrun and Wasteland again is incredible enough and should be supported. :)

If they have to fund the game via kickstarter then they likely can't afford the licensing costs to make console games.
It's not a matter of snubbing, but a matter of actually being able to even make the game.

What the Wii U really needs is a Pocky machine.

Either that, or an ice cream maker.

Imagine playing Blue Bell: The Video Game Adventure, and at the end of each level you get a small measure of ice cream, the amount depending on how well you did. Each level could give you a different flavor, and you can use the level selector once you've beaten the game.

Yeah, it's already incredible enough as you say, can't wait to play these games :)

Nintendo should open an entire division dedicated to nurturing indie game development. I know SPD 3 & 4 do some of that now, but a NoA group that is strictly involved with working with garage developers in North America would only be a good thing for Wii U Online/eShop.

[Again]How much cost a PC>Console port? Sure it must depend which console is targeted and the game you want to port but according to The Banner Saga Kickstarter page, to port the game to XBLA & PSN should cost $50K max. (600K = orchestral score / 650K more stuff in the game & XBLA-PSN port). They're at $629,025, with 29h before the end. It should be ok for the 650K cut.

NOA can barely be bothered to release one or two VC games a month on the eShop, not sure I trust them to "foster" indie content.

Kind of sad. When they announced the Wii VC I thought for sure they would be pushing out content on a weekly basis. We'd be lucky enough to get one VC game a month from them.

This is definitely not the site, I made this a few days ago for future GAFers whose accounts won't be activated by E3.

Oh my mistake. I didn't know you started a message board :P

I put a little more thought into Nintendos goal with the Wii U. And the solution is so simple. Its in the name itself.

Think about it... "Wii U" as in "We" and "You". This may be the reason why they try so hard to get the trademark issue resolved. Its about getting the company and the fans/customer interaction to another level.

First thing that may happen is just a "mediocre" 3rd party support. Look at the MDK2 dude. When someone holds a grudge, they cling to it like their lives depend on it. Reggie farted in the elevator once and the company may never release a game on a Nintendo console ever again. I start to believe that Nintendo tried to get a good 3rd party support, but it wasn´t as successful as they hoped. Then they licenced the free development software for devs around GDC, and made sure, WiiU runs the most of the 3rd party engines. Now they could be in a position where they say: "Ok, if you dont want to develop for us, its ok. We will surely survive without your help. But if you want to join us now or later, you are welcome! We give you all the tools you need to get started! These engines do run and are optimized for our hardware."

Worst case that could happen: Gamecube 2.0 with a good balance between casual and core games from BigN. They still manage to make a lot of profit!

Most likely scenario: The above with better third party support, but still not quite there yet.

Best case: Good 3rd party support, but unfortunately unlikely.

Now about their online service NiN:

I really start to belive that Nintendo is on the verge to go "all out" on the "Online" issue. But it may work a little diffrent than on Live and SEN.

While Live and SEN focus on accomplishments/trophys and gamerscores, so players can show who go the biggest...

On NiN i truly believe there wont be any kind of "Gamerscore" etc. There may be a "accomplishment" system that rewards you with items for you Mii (As already discussed in here). How can Nintendo bring the company closer to the fans/customer? With turnaments. Votings for covers for games (Kinda like with Xenoblade but this time it would be the real cover). The new 2D Mario may in fact have a level editor and those levels can be directly uploaded. There could be a contest for the best Level design. The level that wins will be put in the next 2D Mario. A monthly "Play against a Nintendo employee" could be held. Beat Reggie in Mario Kart U and your Mii gets a special gift, wich you can only get when you beat a Nintendo employee. This Event could also be streamed live. See the contestents on the uPad and the gameplay on the TV.

There are alot of possibilities for an online service focusing on "We and You"

*puh* alot of text, wow! This is what i came up with, trying to anser the question "What is Nintendo trying to archieve with the WiiU?" (Except making money, of course!)

Just for kicks, I've just watched a couple of videos from last years E3.

HHHNNNGGGG

Hype through the roof. Again.

Yup, they've positioned themselves well for E3 2012. Whether they knock it out of the park remains to be seen, but I have the faith. :) Very exciting.

Kind of sad. When they announced the Wii VC I thought for sure they would be pushing out content on a weekly basis. We'd be lucky enough to get one VC game a month from them.

To be fair, there's a content management issue there. There aren't that many 'great' games to release in the grand scheme of things, and they need to pace their releases over however many months, generations or hardware iterations they want the whole VC thing to last.

If they do blow their load, the chances to reinvigorate the VC market by releasing a big title will be gone, and if they allow their eShop's to be flooded by mediocre titles from yesteryear, then there's a risk that they might lower the standard and perception of the shop generally - which could threaten new and original titles.

I'm less concerned about VC releases and more concerned that they right their practices on original titles and incentivise production of new games for their platform. There are some devs who know how to play ball on Nintendo's terms and are doing well, but I think they could make their market more open, friendly and profitable. In fact, I think they need to.

Man oh man.. if last year's E3 does that to you, you're going to be in a diabetic coma come this E3. It's gonna be that sweet.

I absolutely can't wait.

I was on honeymoon for last years E3, and for some reason the Nintendo conference was the only one I didn't catch up with when I got back. The video montage Nintendo put together was great. Putting the uPad on the floor as a tee and playing Golf using the Wiimote made me SQQUUEEEE.

I need this machine.

You know...pretty much everything we were hoping to get last year at E3 we'll be getting this year. At least for me.

Last year I was more confused than satisfied about everything I took in. They put out only so much information and that in turn just brought up a ton of questions. Nearly a year later those questions have yet to be answered.

Certainly a good year to be a Nintendo fan.

You have a point, but when I look at the N64 VC for instance, I don't see much content out. There are quite a few titles missing from the N64 Library on the VC. I think they'll continue to push out content with the Wii U VC. We're missing quite a few good titles from all consoles available on the VC. Why haven't we gotten Earthbound or Mega Man X2 yet? They've had 6 years to release these titles, but they decided to not push VC as we had hoped.

I think now that they have increased the file size limitation on the 3DS we'll see something similar on the Wii U, so the possibility of full GC, Saturn and Dreamcast titles being released would mean they will have more quality content to push out. I don't see how this can possibly mean they'll blow out their load this generation if they'll be getting newer content.

I agree with your point about releasing original content, but I don't think original titles would take a hit by releasing VC titles.

I really hope this is what Nintendo is doing with Wii U. With a Nintendo Network similar to SEN or LIVE I'd be pretty happy, but using these ideas and others to go beyond those services would be just awesome. These are excellent ideas for engaging their pre-built community; all of us existing Nintendo fans finally able to come together and enjoy the company's offerings. I especially like the idea of playing against Nintendo employees, with the game being streamed; perhaps in a small box on the Network's home screen which you can expand, entering into a lobby with the action on the tablet screen and community on the TV, or vice versa. Of course, it'd be even better if third parties are also able to engage the community this way through the same service.

I wasnt expecting that much, wanted games tho. This E3 has to deliver on that since we havent seen actual games on Wii U yet.

I phoned up Reggie, and he asked me "What's an Earthbound?"

It'd be really unusual for them to have a console release year E3 presentation that isn't at least above average in quality.

Edit: I found that this list helped my hype a little, even though not all of it is completely accurate. Also, Nintendogaf apparently supports animated avatars, remember those? ;)

The good thing is, they've basically gone mute on Wii U titles for nearly a year. Which means they should have quite a number of games that they've been holding-back and keeping mum on.

I wouldn't be so sure if I were you. So, so much can go wrong

Pretty much.

Honestly, I'll be happy if the following are at E3 in some way, shape or form:

-Mario Wii U
-Mario 3DS
-Zelda 3DS
-Retro's New Game
-Pikmin 3
-Clarification about Wii U's power (not in depth tech information)

Anything more is icing on the cake.

That all seems really reasonable, and totally expected. And you know as well as I do that Nintedo, of all three companies, likes its E3 surprises.. go on and ask Sony or MS fans what they think about their companies' surprise habits. Nintendo's pretty smart on that aspect of things.

Being realistic, I don't see how they can screw this up. Especially if you're a Nintendo fan.

They may not be able to convert waves of people to their product, but they will definitely leave Nintendo fans frothing at the mouth.

We said that last year. It was their show to lose... and they lost.

A "but before you leave..." moment would be appropriate ;)

IMO everybody lost. MS was horrible, Sony was too predictable and Nintendo was... well not very clear.

I think that that was the first time where everybody tried to say, "no.. it's your turn to win. After you, my good sir. No, but I insist.."

Certainly funny around here. NeoGAF comedy was the winner that year. :)
