One of the most important things to be paying attention to at E3 is how the marketing campaign is shaping up. That's going to tell you more about what the future has in store than anyone's musings about power. Take a look at last E3's 3rd party sizzle reel, full of T and M titles, or the recent Joel McHale 3DS ad. These are examples of a shift in perception Nintendo has been trying to make in order for the Western audience to take notice. If they can get people to go from thinking of them as Disney to thinking of them as something closer to Apple or Virgin in terms of brand perception, then they will have a massive hit on their hands. MS and Sony's fight to be the most extreme and powerful is not something Nintendo should jump into, no matter how seriously the current gaming press takes it. I think Nintendo should make sure to not be seen as taking themselves that seriously (like McHale's ad), and as being open to all sorts of audiences.

The key for launch is to get gamers that already have a PS3/360 to pick one up. Which requires much more aggressive and different marketing than we saw for the launch of the Wii.
Exactly. I think their userbase should consist of core gamers looking for more cerebral and artistic experiences; coupled with Nintendo fans and casuals, they could easily make a splash without bending over backwards for the hardcore.
This is pretty much what they've explicitly said they're doing though so I don't know why I'm typing it.
See, I think this sensor stuff has potential. You can see the instant appeal in 'Wii Relax' and some kind of Ubisoft sensor game.
It even appeals to me as well, I love the idea of Nintendo greenlighting some major horror IP, whether new or ED to work with this sensor. I'd love a horror game to change depending on how my heart rate increases, what's even better is that they'd have to absolutely ensure the game's scary as fuck or it wouldn't work.

Actually...that'd be...genius. Absolutely genius. I don't know why that discount would be in there or anything but yeah, that'd be great.
I think they'd do a variable pricing model though depending on the subscription. 1 month could be $20, 6 months for $15/mo and a year for $10/mo. They would seriously have to increase the rate of additions to the VC library though.

And another bonus for susbscribers is they could play the games early. Although I'm not sure how badly people would want to, but perhaps if it were extended to high-profile WiiUWare games (if there are any).
(disclaimer: I'm not a DD fanatic, but I think they definitely need to rework the pricing model for the VC.)
On that note, I'm excited to see what the 'innovation' to online networking that was mentioned at one of the Investors' Conferences is. Also, I'd also like to see what Ghost Recon: Online and ToR (if the rumors are true) will be like, on the system.

Also I know it was way back, but somebody noted the Wii U logo looks like a bag without handles; am I the only one who thinks the U part looks like a (tote/hand)bag with the actual u being the handles hanging down?
That's some sly logo making, sure it's hard to actually identify it as a "U", but the logo itself is subconsciously familiar and unintimidating, would be pretty cerebral.

Rear-facing camera is another one. Well, all three of these are really "hopefuls" and not "rumours.
I'll pretty much only play with folks I know and trust because of this. I can't stand the gameplay you're describing.. so insipid. So it's some family members, a few friends, and.. you guys. You're all gonna end-up on my friends list whenever this thing gets going.

I think it would be great if they offered one free e-shop game to download a month for subscribers. Part of the subscription fee would go to the developer of that particular title.

Here's what I want:
- the console supported 90% by Nintendo/second parties/collaborations with third parties on special projects
- better eastern third-party support for the remaining 10%
- Nsider Forum Channel
- instead of cutting-off major news outlets, Nintendo giving more interviews and breaking stories to community-run websites
- a means through which the community can vote on which projects they'd like to kickstart for the system next
Basically, I want an entire comprehensive Nintendo ecosystem that's pretty independant of the rest of the industry. Games, a community gathering spot, community news sites, etc etc. Some will see it as isolationism, but I'd say it's more a matter of self-sufficiency.
Multimedia wise I don't need anything anymore as I bought an Apple TV a few months ago. However, if I was going to get rid of that then I'd need a minimum of DLNA and preferably a Plex client. Then I'd want iTunes integration to play m ITunes music. If it can't do all the Apple stuff I use now it might as well not do any of it.

I can see the subscription model working for their NES, SNES, N64 library but I think the GC games should be released as standalone titles as it is basically making its debut as part of the virtual console. How much is a yearly xbox live subscription?
It would also be idea for Nintendo to not abandon standalone prices for each of their VC games for consumers who do not want to access the whole library and just be able to play a few games here and there so that way it is fair for everyone and also add the enticement to go and get the subscription, as there will be a perceived added value in comparison to purchasing single titles.
You can also add some kind of perceived value to those using their online services by having a differing kind of achievement system where good deeds do not go unpunished. Helping other player in an online game via training in a hard place in a game rewards you with certain mushrooms kingdom coins that you can use to purchase hats!!!
Interesting to say the least will be seeing how Nintendo handles the community aspect of their online network as I believe they will be taking a leaf out of valves platform as an online structure to look up to rather than sony or MS version of online. Other outside community platforms such as facebook and twitter as well as even iOS and android market paltofrms will also see some kind influence over how nintendo will present the user interface. There will be many challenges ahead of course with regards to ip conflicts but if nintendo is smart they can create their own ecosystem an online community based solely on games that will not only rival their predecessors or the current incumbents but also compliment them such as EA or ubisofts online.
Is there some kind of NDA being lifted today for anything Wii U related or was that just speculation?
ALso what is the current concensus (if any) of the Wii U hardware in more specific terms regarding teh GPU? are we still looking at the wii u being able to do over a TFLOP of performance and be capable of samaritan level graphics @ 720p 30fps 2XAA for the main screen?
I am going back to playing CS:GO and hopefully by the time i finish, the investors meeting will have something funny from the Q&A like last time. Do not disappoint in the early reporting so help me neogaf, you are my only hope.

They could call it the Wii Sakoku then. Hmm don't know if I like the numbers distribution, if anything 3rd parties would feel vindicated and leave Nintendo for good...er than they already did. Though I can understand the notion of just not putting anything out if you're not going to make it good. It will be interesting to see how Nintendo can cope with the additional manpower required for HD games, the game output should suffer slightly (in fact it seems to already do that, the MC thread counted something in the region from 33 games to 30).
Really, if we end up getting many multiplatform titles on Wii U, the 3rd party number shouldn't be so low and wouldn't have to be so low. Because at least we know they won't screw up those titles (intentionally or not) "because its Nintendo", one reason why I want to see ports more so than individual efforts in the launch period.
Quite honestly that doesn't sound like a situation that's going to be super prevalent for most customers hehe, but yeah Nintendo shouldn't try to be a media center too much. Have the basic functionality there (like on 3ds) for people who have to have it, mainly to "Check that box", but don't go balls to the wall feature heavy. The media hub fight for the living room is Sony and Microsoft land (maybe add Apple and *snap* Valve).

I know. I was just digging on how people use "multiplayer" these days to mean "online multiplayer", whereas "local multiplayer" has to have the extra adjective.
That's a pretty long session you're planning there.
Earnings should be in about 6-8 hours. People seem to be vaguely suggesting that the actual meeting will be half a day later, but I don't know.
Most likely nowhere near 1TFLOP. So, technically, no it would not be able to run Samaritan at those settings. However, that doesn't necessarily rule out UE4.
Heh I see I see, really any "multiplayer" title should have both, but I understand why most devs can't be bothered to put in local multiplayer, additional work? No thanks! Also you would probably have to tone down a detail here or there nonononono.
(also insert comment about how you can't sacrifice additional fps if you aim for 30fps from the start unlike nintendo :troll)

Exactly, especially since this last month or two has brought the most negative rumors and articles about Nintendo since I don't know when. I haven't seen it this bad in a long time.

Had an interesting conversation today with a guy I'm carpooling with for a new job. The training class is an hour away so we have plenty of time to talk and it turns out he's a huge gamer, has a Wii, 3DS, 360 and also plays a lot of PC games. I started talking about the current controversy with big companies coming down on used games and the possibility of NextBox and PS4 locking out used games and maybe not even having BC and he cut me off right there in mid sentence and said "If ANY of that happens, I will NOT get the next XBox. I'll sell my 360 and just go with the next Nintendo console and my PC." Thought it was interesting and reinforces the fact that GAF isn't always an island, this is a feeling that is spreading further into the masses.
Part of me honestly thinks that some gaming media outlets see this as their chance to smother it while it's in its infancy, at least with the core crowd. Don't want a repeat of the whole Wii episode, now, do we? The Wii got some core purchasers in addition to its large casual base, and embarrassed them big-time. They all predicted its failure, they mocked it and turned their snooty hardcorier-than-thou noses up at it, and they ended-up looking ridiculous.
My personal opinion? I hope it rocks the world. Nintendo would solidify its financial standing, and as a huge bonus, it would embarrass these.. persons.. all over again.

Since I was intrigued how that TV channel was done in Japan I found that they pretty boringly used a system that was already in place: G Guide. That also explains why it was never available overseas *shakefist*
The guys (now with Rovi) have put out something that sounds to be something similar for a global market though, "TotalGuide". I bet we already had 100 postings of this like always but meh, does TotalGuide xD for example sound like anything we could get on Wii U to you guys?
Hrm seems I'll sleep through most of the madness, unless the actual meeting turns out to be at a nice time :/ I expect to wake up to 5 pages of FOLLDERSSSSSSSSSSS! or well...the equivalent.

Hmmm.. good point. And that celecrities idea is absolutely spot-on.
Perhaps just the first X hours could be played? And then if the game is older than Y years, they could go a bit deeper into the game?

But I don't think E3 is enough to shut critics up. Most of the criticism for Wii came after 2008, 2 years after Wii had launched.
Nintendo's job needs to assure gamers that Wii U will be amazing for the next 5 years. For N64, GameCube, and Wii, we experienced huge software droughts for long amounts of time. After going through this with 3 consoles, they need to figure out a way to better deal with software droughts. And that's why third party games are important. Third party games solve the software droughts when Nintendo's games aren't ready.

Well, underpowered specs are basically one aspect of what I'm arguing: that Nintendo has spent most of the past decade - longer, depending on whom you ask - acting like a company that isn't concerned with what core gamers think.
Not that that makes those specs a mistake; DS ended up a huge success despite N64+ specs, I don't buy at all that 3DS would have significantly better third-party support if it just had a GPU that could run UE3, and Wii has done very well for most of a normal console lifespan. But particularly in the case of Wii, going with an overclocked GC has had significant and potentially long-term negative consequences for the Nintendo brand (and third-party relations in particular) that I'm not sure Nintendo fully foresaw when they chose to go the route they did.
If you don't have a 3DS it's pretty easy to tell what's wrong with you and what you need to do to change it.

Well it's been noted before but: Nintendo really wasn't sure if the DS and Wii would work and they didn't want to like...die or smth, so they did what they did. Now they're stuck between a rock and a hard place because DS&Wii not only worked but exploded, and while they now can confidently make a powerful system like that, it would actually be a on-savvy decision if they can make a cheap system and dominate like that. DS&Wii were too successful for their own (or well our) sake.
