Wii U Speculation thread IV: Photoshop rumors and image memes

Guys. Guys. Guys.

HeroClix + WiiU = Money Printing Game of the Forever? I say that never having bought a figurine in my life.

Also, to the purchasable Smash Bros trophy unlocks: YES!

I said it when they unveiled that the Wii U pad would use NFC: It'd be a genius move if they sold eShop titles in stores as figurines that you could collect. As a collector, I'd rather have those than game cases with DVDs, and that's the only thing (besides crazy prices, and I bet that won't happen) that would make me fully embrace Digital Distribution outside Steam.

Why sell codes to the stores when you can give them figurines? They have no choice with the 3DS, but with Wii U they should do it.

Also, this!

My thoughts precisely. It would enhance offline multiplayer a lot for me.

Honestly, I still feel sour about Ubisoft considering their Wii support was abysmal aside from Red Steel 2.
And No More Heroes 1/2
And the Raving Rabbids series
And personally, Just Dance.

Ubisoft is a frustrating company for me, they produce a ton of fun and interesting things, but also pile on the crap at the same time.

as long as the content is not locked to these figures, it's not a big deal. i should not be required to buy figures to get more content out of my game.

The Rayman stuff... especially the Rabbids kind of reminded me of Super Mario World, where you can unlock enemy skins after you beat the special world.
So it doesn't take away from the game, but adds a cool little extra or reason to replay it.

Holy crap, man. I just told my wife about this and this was something she would be totally into. Hell, if I released a game on the Wii U, that is exactly what I'd do. Just buy the little figurine, take it home, and scan it in. No codes to enter. Whoever exploits that will be doing themselves a huge favor. I'd buy the digital version just for the figure to put on the mantle.

Which are unfortunately, probably not counterbalancing the effort needed to make the Wii U stream to four separate controllers. I'd rather they focus on something else like making sure voice chat's ready from launch, amongst other features.

But voice chat doesn't interest me at all! D:

(It's interesting -- I really see it having absolutely no benefit at all to gaming save for maybe needing to easily communicate in squad-based co-op titles, even though I know that many people adore it; at the same time, improvement of split screen gaming is a personal Most Important Thing in gaming to me, although I know that most people could give the slightest snarpdog about that)

We have mentioned it before but: From the Q&As, interviews, this trailer and so on, I get the feeling that the online capabilities and social features is going the be the big focus of Wii U. The pad is obviously perfect for any kind of social interaction, from text to video with everything in between. Iwata and others have frequently mentioned how important online will be. They have also hinted at unexpected third party alliances. This doesn't have to involve gaming companies. Some sort of facebook collaberation isn't unlikely, something similar to how spotify does it with music. See what your friends are playing, from your PC aswell as Wii U, jump in, or even try it out in a demo like fashion if you don't own the game. Seeing "Friend X is playing Pikmin 3" pop up on facebook is even great advertising.

Perhaps Nintendo will make a Chrome/Firefox extension that really detects whether the player does this:

Gosh darnit, is there some type of achievement for getting the last post on two pages in a row!

>.<

I wonder what Ezio does in the game? Do you think they'll render him as a playable character in that style? I mean already have the girl with the axe

The NFC goodies in the Legends trailer now has me looking at my figurine collection and thinking of all the NFC possibilities. What if we had....

.....Mega Man NFC?! (if Capcom stops trying to bury the series)

Gradius NFC?! Download an upgraded Vic Viper into your UPad to help shoot down the Bacterion!

R-TYPE NFC?!

MST3K NFC?! (back in the 90s there was an interactive MST3K CDROM game in the works for PC that got cancelled) Oh, and special guest star Gamera! (my rare Gamera 3 import theater figure, he didn't come with the DVD set):

I really want to see goofy ezio in Rayman style. Could be really fun from an artistic standpoint.

Also like the Rabbids are not a special attack, but a special stage with them, Ezio could have a Rome or Venice stetting stage in the art of 2D Rayman (and that could be glorious).
It also rings very well with the Legends concept of the game.

Hahahaha, this is fucking amazing!
I like that Crow has a better finish than in the real series lol

Let's get some of the obvious out of the way

LEGO City Stories.. where you can buy sets and scan them into the game? Maybe certain pieces come with additional missions.. essentially toy DLC

Hot Wheels.. someone makes a great Hot Wheel game.. and really the rest writes itself..

Actually, I can see Hasbro pursuing some of their licenses like GI Joe and Transformers. I mean folks say video games are the new toys.. make toys the new component of video games

Lego Cities has so much insane potential for NFC. Any Lego game would greatly benefit from it.

The Rayman leak has confirmed what I've quietly suspected since we found out about NFC. My wallet will bleed when Nintendo releases some sort of game involving figurines. That aside, I'd like to echo others and say:
That screen.....hhhngh.
E3 can't come soon enough.

MOAR!

Look, if this happens, "serious" gamers will complain about how Nintendo is still for the kiddiez. Meanwhile children and grown-ups everywhere will be having lots of fun (as long as the price isn't extortion), and games could have a reliable third source of revenue (original sale, dlc, toys(yes, these would just be tangible DLC)). This means less studios closing, and more games being made. It's really a win win.

Do not want this NFC future, it means that I will have to collect alot of plastic in order to unlock stuff, I guess it's like DLC but more expensive. I mean I have hard time buying games because money is tight. Anyway it's gonna to sell like crazy among childrens.

The toys thing is hopefully a short-time fad like plastic instruments. The Rayman collectibles look like really easy cash cows...

A lot of the reason their launch stuff sucked for Wii was because they got Wii dev kits late.

And developers didn't have enough time to implement the Wii motion technology correctly.

I'm not just talking about launch. In general their Wii output was abysmal and left a sour taste in my mouth. The only Ubisoft developed game I have is Red Steel and I've avoided anything else they put out for the Wii.

And No More Heroes 1/2
And the Raving Rabbids series
And personally, Just Dance.

Ubisoft is a frustrating company for me, they produce a ton of fun and interesting things, but also pile on the crap at the same time.

NMH 1/2 wasn't developed by Ubisoft. I didn't care for the Rabbids series and Just Dance. Kinda a shitty output if you ask me.

Why's everyone so pissed off by 'one tablet'. We're in the age of online gaming, it's not like local multiplayer is void either...

It's a great compromise.

Because I still like to play split screen? Brawl and Kart is a million times better playing together and NSMB Wii / 4 Swords were great games with MP. I don't want to use a last gen controller. Especially the Wii Remote. Two tablets at a minimum or bust. Especially with games like the new Smash Bros. No one I know plays with the Wii Remote on that game. They use the Gamecube controller because those remotes just don't work well for every game. Really hoping they get it all worked out for launch.

Well, guess that's just your opinion. A lot of people liked the Rabbids games and Just Dance is huge. Ubisoft had a lot of crap games but they also had some excellent games despite the demographic.

Dingdingdingding! When I'm done playing the game and I shelve it for X years until I play it again, I still could end-up with some sweet-looking figurines decorating the Nintendo Room. So sweet.

But if someone isn't a fan, I suppose I can see where they'd shrug at the value aspect.

(oh, and for GPW and IdeaMan: Krev came-up with an awesome idea for a game late last night, and I threw an idea or two in.. have y'all seen it yet? Really good stuff!)

Yeah i've read it, it's interesting and looks fun :) We definitively need a list of all those ideas, and discuss about it in a dedicated thread.

The toys thing is hopefully a short-time fad like plastic instruments. The Rayman collectibles look like really easy cash cows...

The potential for something like NFC as an easy (secure?) payment method, and for scanning in extra content etc. is huge, but companies will have to be responsible about it. If they just turn it into a collectible-heavy moneysink it'll be a real shame.

Why on earth wouldn't you want the toys you are going to buy for your kids/nieces/nephews anyway to work with a video game?

Let's say they come out with a new line of GI Joe toys, for example, to complement a GI Joe game. The game comes fully featured, and the toys unlock additional vehicles, skins, levels, or characters. You can also just download the unlock codes, if you don't want to purchase the toys.

Even after the Wii U is sitting covered with dust, you still have GI Joe toys that your kids can play with. This is a pretty good thing.

For NFC

Brawl - trophies, special weapons, character NFC figures works similar to skylanders place near tablet, activate character (btw you do not have to remove from packaging the signal will get thru) its in game.

pokemon U(niverse)... GOLDMINE - license to print money.. few hundred characters- make a few rare models of said character, run to bank with cash-make ultra rare legendary models....

that said Rayman legends looks good :)

cannot wait til another leak happens

They should use this NFC thing to buy DD from retailers, that way we didn't input a 6 digit code, just putting the controller near to a transfering device.

There already is a official thread for this. It's old, but probably not too old for bumping.

Link to the Past: a Dark World visor (←there are also a few other similar articles linked from there; say, when did "GameXplain" become a thing? they seem pretty awesome so far in everything I've seen linked from here)

"For example, skydiving where the TV screen gives you a third person view and the DRC shows a view of the ground so you can move yourself over to the landing position."

"Here's an idea: a 3rd person deathmatch game where all combatants are on rollerskates. Lots of melee and ranged weapons. Think very big, very vertical stages with lots of hills and jumps scattered around. Getting air is encouraged so that you can grab powerups, reach higher levels, etc. Whenever you are soaring through the air, you can look down on the uPad and see a view of the ground directly below you, with a target right in the middle of it. If you get the timing just right you can activate a ground pound/dive bomb type attack and land right on top of one of your hapless opponents."

…you know what is for local multiplayer? Not having your health and ammo and other critical info displayed on the splitscreened TV when you're 4-way multiplaying, so you (A) don't give hints to your opponents about your status and (B) have more actual real estate available for your tiny quarter of the main screen.

-=-
Dimension Hop - a scrolling shooter. The shooting mechanics are relatively simple, the a third dimension is involved -- while the shooter is side-scrolling on the TV, it is a forward-scrolling game on the DRC. The DRC view is how you move into the foreground and background of the main screen (like in LBP but quite a bit more obvious and easy to manage), how you can take cover from enemy fire, how you find hidden items and other secrets "behind" objects, Super Paper Mario style.

The primary analog directional controls the character on the TV, and left/right on the other analog directional can control the extra dimension of action on the DRC"

-=-
Viral Attack! - the playing field starts sparsely filled with innocent cells. Over time, viruses of various shapes appear and start moving towards the cells. The viruses have simple, well defined shapes (many viruses in real life actually do, as they often have quasi-crystalline structure to them). Use the DRC to draw an "antibody" of the proper matched shape and "launch" it to the television screen, where you can use the analog directional and buttons to encapsulate each virus, preventing them from attaching to cells.

For each level, there is a bar indicating how healthy this area of the body is. If the health goes down to zero as viruses take over more and more cells, then you lose the game. If you destroy the viruses before health is depleted, you win the level and can go to the next stage, which contains more viruses, or fewer cells, or a wider variety of different virus shapes to defeat"

Last gen? You say the same thing about the Dual Shock or the Xbox 360? There's nothing wrong with the remote and nunchuck.

See, I don't want this for Smash Bros, not in that sense anyhow. It just seems like a way to remove something that was a staple in the series so that you can buy it later on.

If its how Nintendo handles DLC characters and stages for the game, different story.

wonderful WE for everyone and have a lot of fun with your games!!
Hope there will be some good news if I'm back on Monday (but today was great too)
See ya all

Is this the place to beg for HD version of cube and Wii games? Seeing the rayman leak makes me want a HD Windwaker even more (yes I played it on dolphin) and a re-release of Galaxy in HD.

When I play a game I do not want to be forced into buying collectibles to get all features. It's as simple as that. Nor do I want a stupid unlock code. Until now, at least Nintendo did not rip me off with such crap.

You would rather pay for DLC and get...nothing but the DLC? I like the idea that in the future when I buy DLC, I get a collectible with it. As for Nintendo not doing this before, they've done worse. They've had features that you could NEVER unlock in your game, without being at the right place at the right time (such as at the Nintendo World Store in New York).

Seems like you forgot what they did with the Gamecube and GBA connection.

More expensive than a 10$ DLC.

i don't want dlc, either. especially not the way it's being handled in fea.

Oh god, they are going to combine NFC with their already addictive collectable minifigs. Now I'll have more incentive to bag feel.

And here I was hoping it was some late WiiU megaton that broke GAF for me for the last hour or so worth of tires... :P

That NFC stuff is going to be wild big, book it. There's room for both obvious cash grabs and real interesting in game changes with something like that going on.

with nfc i fully expect a pokemon with nfc character "toys" to be released - either for 3ds or wiiu or one that can be played on both......

this is an older picture of my kids skylanders collections, they have gotten about 10 more since i took this, including SEVERAL rares (my wife goes in so often the guys put the rares away for her-without her asking)

now imaging the collection if pokemon does this.........

Just saw the trailer. Pretty cool. I mean I'll never get it, just didn't feel the latest Rayman game despite the great art design (not worth the price for me). But it looked cool indeed.

Also the NFC thing begs the question again...pokemon for the console....ah who am I kidding they'll do stadium and sell the little figures to use for battle.

I used a sideways Wii Remote on Smash Bros. Worked great.
BTW, if the Wii Remote + Nunchuck are "last gen" controllers, then the other systems have a design that's 3 generations old. I say it's about time we move on. Unfortunately it seems that Nintendo disagrees with me on this one :(

Last gen? You say the same thing about the Dual Shock or the Xbox 360? There's nothing wrong with the remote and nunchuck.

Beat me to the punch. If the Wii Remote + Nunchuck had a couple extra buttons or something it would've been awesome. Split controllers >>>> non-split controllers. WM and Move are so much more comfortable to play with, and pointers >>>> sticks.

I don't want any DLC apart from stuff like additional episodes. Why should I buy a toy or code to get something like invincibility in Rayman Legends? I don't want cheap gimmicks but the game itself.

And I don't generally hate add-ons, but they need to add to the core experience, like for example the pulse meter in O.Zen or the balance board in Wii Fit.

Yes, I forgot about that. I also forgot about the e-reader crap that never got to Europe.

It's really good for me to see these speculations & ideas about NFC going on finally :)

These figurines together with the Near Field Capabilities of the Wii U do not really excite me, but I can definitely see the sales potential in them. What I hope for is that the market doesn't become oversaturated with these things and that every game comes equipped with semi-interactive statuettes. I wouldn't wanna turn on the telly to see an episode of Hoarders where some poor guy has had his entire home filled with miniature Marios and Sonics.

Also, wasn't there any Q & A session of the Financial Results Briefing earlier today (JST)? Nothing's been posted on Nintendo's IR page anyway.
