Welcome to the third installment of the Wii U Speculation thread. On our way to E3, you may see and hear some things that befuddle, bemuse and bewitch you.
Please, at all times, remain calm, don't panic, and whatever you do, don't exit the train.
This thread is a collection of rumors, facts, hype, teases and all sorts of things that would kill a normal person. But fear not. We have brave souls here to guide us towards E3. Listen closely, and you just might learn something.
Have fun, and as always, watch out for the Ninjas.
The players:
bgassassin: The ever watchful. His posts are the grounding for much of the speculation in the thread.
lherre: A developer actually working on the Wii U. He'll tease. He'll taunt. And most of all, he'll say nothing. Yet, he's already said more than anyone dared hope.
IdeaMan: The crazy French Journalist. Careful, his teases may excite you, but his quips will leave you cold.
The Rumors (AKA NOT FACT):
Nintendo is targeting, at a bare minimum, 1GB of RAM.
Nintendo is working to optimize popular third party engines.
The amount of RAM used for the OS is "surprising". Could change with optimization.
UE4 is "working" on the Wii
This is the 2011 list
But all links link back to a post on that forum which will then provide a link to the source
Rumor Consolidation 2011
and this is the 2012 list so far
Rumor Consolidation 2012
p.s. There are 2 rumors sourced back to members of that forum
1 is to me, and the other is another member that I know in real life.
(I vetted both sources before posting them on here)

Nintendo Licenses Autodesk and Havok for third parties:
Nintendo announced today that it has entered agreements with the physics and animation engine Havok, and Autodesk Gameware for a variety of under-the-hood tools. Both of these agreements allow Nintendo to provide the engines to third-party developers for use in Wii U games.
Havok was used in games like BioShock, and to make Stormtroopers hilariously cling on for dear life in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. The Autodesk agreement includes a suite of Gameware tools: Scaleform for user interface, Kynapse for artificial intelligence, and HumanIK for character animation. Autodesk tools have been used in over 1,000 games to date, including Batman: Arkham City and The Witcher 2.
Nintendo has been positioning the Wii U as the answer to criticisms about its failure to appease the hardcore. With these licensing deals, we can at least be assured that third parties will have access to the tools needed to support recent franchises. Whether they hop on-board and commit development resources to take advantage of the unique controller, on the other hand, remains to be seen.
Nintendo no longer using 1t-SRAM. Puts how BC is achieved in question.
Information on Nintendo Network:
Wii U:
- User accounts: Wii U will have individual user accounts, rather than one system-wide account.
- NFC: Near Field Communication ("touch" data transmission from accessories, credit cards, etc... sort of like QR/Streetpass combined) will be built-in.
- Online: Miyamoto: "Network has to have a totally new concept to be different."
General:
- Third parties: Several new, previously unconsidered alliances/partnerships with third parties.
- Communities: You haven't seen the last of them!
- Retail title downloads: 3DS and Wii U both support digital download of retail titles, but... they still aren't quite sure how to implement it just yet.
- Item billing: "We should not decline third parties if they want to offer item billing" (paying to unlock content).
- DLC: Still planning to offer DLC (possibly talking about their own software), but needs more time to complete its feasibility study on the market and its needs.
- More sharing: "Digital will include user to user communications and sharing" (More social networking integration? More Swapnote-like apps? More emphasis on Streetpass/Spotpass?).
- Better-paced software + DLC: Nintendo has learnt that it shouldn't have stagnant periods between software launches: can fill the gap, and DLC can extend the life of a title.
- Asia: Planning products for Asia, local partners (WiiQue U?) yet to be announced; still issues of copyright.
- Miyamoto still around, Iwata angry at Wired. "Miyamoto is saying his basic work is to create a big hit."
