Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

Even if it looks like this?

I really hope Nintendo gives us 2D Mario, Metroid, Donkey Kong and a top-down Zelda, all with awesome hand-drawn graphics, 60fps and fluid animation in HD.

I'd personally love to see Retro or EAD do a modern DK or Mario as a hand drawn 2D platformer, not to mention how well 2D Mario sells. I'd be especially interested to see that kind of art talent experiment with using both hand drawn art and 3D effects/geometry in a game like that. Would be cool.

What? There is no PC version...

and why would it look so remarkably better than PS360 even if there were? Better yes, but not to that extent.

1.) Yes, there is. That's why someone (from THQ? Dunno) said a few months ago that the Wii U version of DS2 will look comparable or even as good as the PC version. At the very least it would look noticably better than the PS360 version of the game.

2.) Because Darksiders 2 seems to have been in development for the Wii U for quite some time already, a year at least, taking the PC version (which exists, btw) as a basis.
Since both the Wii U and an average today's PC have more power than either the PS3 or 360 there is a very plausible reason to assume that the Wii U version will look "so remakably better than PS360".

I call at least textures at higher resolutions, the same amount of AA, 720p at 60 fps and maybe a few more polygons here and there.
Overall a prettier experience than what the PS360 will turn out to be. I'm pretty sure of that.

EDIT: I am too slow for this thread. I also thought you were talking about DS2 instead of Epic Mickey 2. I am sorry.

There's a number of reasons the hud could be missing. Plus, look at the cursor. It's either PS3+move or wii u.

Well, then its definitely not PS3 or Xbox 360. Those consoles aren't capable of visuals that good.

*points up*

i was talking about a different game. I agree those DS2 shots are most likely either PC or just bullshots

If they make another DK game I hope its a "Donkey Kong City" where they move the franchise to an urban landscape in order to freshen things up.

Oh lord. I could totally see them incorporating funky kong and some ill conceived raps.

NOT SURE IF WANT

You know, I wouldn't mind a Donkey Kong 64 2 for Wii U.

Then it would be okay :) As long as it's not boring. Sounds strange, I know, but I'm cautious...

I can't see it being Geist. It doesn't fit in with the rumours and spec. It's not something that seems likely to me.

Why not? Hire darksiders artists... which has research the whole bible upside down, knows everything about ghosts, and spirtitual context.

Its seems like a good fit for geist. Humans start mingering with heaven and hell, and cause choas.

Well, according to three awesome Metroid games, one awesome Donkey Kong game and tha majority (?) of the tracks in Mario Kart 7, we can pretty safely assume that Retro can do pretty much anything with any IP and it'll be awesome (but probably only as long as Nintendo is watching behind their backs. Like they did with Rare).

But yeah, I'm getting kinda annoyed by it too.
Retro is doing something, yes.
It's very possibly for the Wii U, yes.
We don't know, though, WHAT it is.

We know that, WHATEVER Retro is making, it's gonna be awesome and it'll be praised by gamers and critics alike. So just enjoy it. It's like christmas. You don't open your presents BEFORE christmas, do you?
(or christmas eve, depending on how you celebrate it).

Exactly. I'm not pre-invested in anything they put out and hope to see more from them because I know they're multi-talented developers with numerous chops under their belt. I kid and joke around about what I'd like to see, but I am more than ready to accept their output knowing it'll be amazing in more than one respect at launch.

that's good =)

For some it was, but for other it wasn't. I think that the "collect-a-thon" platformer is what played a major role in the decline in popularity of the platformer. Platformers were very popular on the PSone/Saturn/N64, but it's popularity dropped dramatically last generation. It's come back in a big way this generation, but I don't think that it's a surprise that it did that thanks to games that aren't described as collect-a-thons.

Yeah, my..dislike towards DK64 was before GAF. I still enjoyed the game, the visuals and had some fun.

Plus, the fact that even Rare made fun of themselves in the Banjo-360 game during the "retro-intro" with the "let the collect-a-ton begin!!" just shows that they admit to it. :p

Ok, I'm going to put on my conspiracy theory hat on for the footage of epic mickey 2 that just got posted. Here are my comments in that thread:

The shots at 45 seconds is obviously Wii version since you can see the cursor waving around. We also know that's not the PS3 version+move because it looks nothing like this:

But the 360 footage at 55 seconds doesn't look any different from the wii version. The lighting in the off screen shot above looks so much better than any of the footage in that video.

The discrepancy between the footage in the video and that off screen shot leads me to believe that might be a wii u screenshot. But then why would they make that version the only one with improved lighting/textures/etc.? It could very well be the blurry off screen shots that are playing tricks on my eyes, but nonetheless, I find it interesting to think about.

We'll have a better idea when they show it on gttv later today. They'll undoubtedly use the PS360 build if they show gameplay since NDAs would prevent them from using Wii U stuff. If the trailer looks like that screenshot above, then I'm wrong. If the discrepancy still remains, however, the screenshot above would definitely be from an unannounced platform, namely Wii U.

I was about to refute everything you said, then I took a second look.. :) I couldn't understand how you knew it was 360 footage, then I saw the "A".

The Wii one I was still unsure about, simply because the cursor seemed too stable to me for a Wii Remote although it did seem to move rapidly from middle to right at one point which made me unsure it was a controller. I guess it could have been a gyroscopic pointer and not IR. Gyro's seem to be a little more floaty and less erratic in my experience.

Couple of questions though"

1) Couldn't that screenshot be a PC version that's been unannounced, or even just their development environment that's working at super high res?

2) Couldn't the Wii stuff equally be PS Move?

You mean zelda: OOt 15fps? I remember how fine I was back then with that. :P

hah! I wonder if the reason old ps1/64 games were more tolerable with their low framerates was because there was a lot less going on on-screen at a time. I think of OoT and remember the framerate being fine, but a modern game that chugs below 30fps with tons of effects and all these little details annoys the crap out of me.

Cant wait for good-feel next game,now that silent hill 2 director works there,they should do a new eternal darkness,or another 2d plataformer.;

GAF seems to fucking hate the game. I've always loved it and viewed it as a spiritual successor to Banjo Kazooie, one of my favorite games ever.

Might have something to do with the fact the actual platforming was awful, it was a collect-ta-thon, and the audio was nothing close to the originals. It was just a bad adaptation of DKC in 3D, it didn't touch the originals.

Then again, I didn't grow up on it. I grew up on the original trilogy. Still a decent game though.

Those AC III screens are amazing. Won't buy though :P

Darksiders II Wii U tidbit sounds promising. I wonder how small that team is. It was pretty easy to work with the U-Pad.

Retro now designed the majority of MK7 tracks? The only course work they actually did was on the 3 Wuhu Island tracks which the EAD director said EAD had to edit in iwata's ask. Their main job was assisting in the art and animation department.

See, that's an interesting word to use. Platformer. I never really viewed Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, Mario Sunshine and similar games as a platformer. They were more "exploration" games, I'd say. I guess that was the mindset for developers during the N64 era. "Now that we have this new 3D technology, here's a huge, open stage, now explore it and collect shit. Beat bosses, find stars, coins, jinjos, shines, blueprints, etc."

The Galaxy games ditched the exploration aspect of those games and returned to the more linear style of platforming. I'd call Galaxy 1/2 a 3D platformer. Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie? Not so much.

Man, I hope AC3 ends up actually looking like this on wii u...

It just needs a decent framerate

Where are those images from?

And where do you see the cursor in the Darksiders 2 images? I can't seem to find it.

Color me impressed if this are the graphics we will be getting. Such a nice IQ.

Count me as one of the guys that loved Donkey Kong 64. I simply love collectathons, even though I don't collect everything in most games. Assassins Creed II felt a bit like a Rare game sometimes because of its big amount of collectables.

You mean zelda: OOt 15fps? I remember how fine I was back then with that. :P

I'm still fine with that. I mean, I played Banjo-Tooie last year, and the framerate drops into single digits sometimes.

A PC version is in the realm of possibility (though I think unlikely), but I can't imagine it would look all that much better than the 360 build (which looks like an upscaled version of the wii build). This isn't some graphically intensive game we're talking about here. The only explanations I can think of why the game would look as nice as it does in the screenshot is that:

- It's a CG movie. But you can see what looks like an animated cursor above mickey's brush. That could be something else like an enemy projectile, but it looks like a cursor to me. Also, we know that that's a level in the game for sure.

- It's the Wii U build, and the reason it looks markedly better than the PS360 version is because the hardware makes it really easy to turn on those effects. I don't think they'd make a game that looked that much better if it wasn't relatively easy to do so, and the only thing I can think of is that the wii u gpu makes it very easy to turn on certain lighting effects, water effects, etc. Someone who's more knowledgeable than I on the matter can correct me if I'm wrong.

And if that cursor footage is the PS3+move build, well that doesn't explain why the screenshot looks so much better. The two can't be one in the same.

Oh, and the cursor stability could have been because they either smoothed that out considerably or because they were controlling the dev build with a mouse instead of on wii/ps3.

And where do you see the cursor in the Darksiders 2 images? I can't seem to find it.

I've been talking about epic mickey 2 literally this entire time. Go look at my quote in AzaK's post :-P

Neat, I had no idea. I wish there was an easy way to track where certain industry people go. Since Nintendo seemingly owns the Fatal Frame franchise atm, perhaps they can get him over their working on one of those games :).

edit

Actually Good Feel has a lot of former Konami employees doesn't it? Him working their makes sense then.

We're not going to hear any news on Monday. Folks should stop raising other folk's hopes.
