Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

News about that new DLC for Batman: AC makes me think..if Batman: AC doesn't come with all the DLC or Batman: Arkham Asylum, it'll be such a rip and I'll be so disappointed.
Sadly, I'll still buy it.

I think I've reeled back some of my expectations a little further. At this point, I'm expecting a CPU nearly identical to xenon with a slight edge, a gpu equivalent to a 4670 with some modern features, and no more than 1GB of GDDR3 ram.

Still more powerful than 360 but not very noticeably. I'll still be happy but I'm going to have to build a new gaming computer.

Yeah, I also have a hard time believing Nintendo will launch their console almost 3 weeks after games like AC3 come out (heck evn games like CoD might be out before the 18th) when they could just as easily pull off a launch earlier then that. I have always assumed that Nintendo would want to launch the Wii U before Novemeber so that their first-party exclusives don't cannibalize third-party game sales, my one concern has always been that Nintendo would launch in Novemeber and there would be way to many games at launch and they would suffocate each other.

Yeah. Being able to launch with a couple 1st-party games in say September along with new console hype should allow them to sustain the console a couple months and at the same time "move out of the way" for new 3rd-party holiday titles.

Man, going away for a few days and leaving my laptop at home has given me a fresh perspective as to how absolutely insane this all is. So, what's the explanation now to these devs who are saying it's less powerful than the current systems, with less shaders? Sony paid em? Or we really all have just been lying to ourselves and each other in this thread?

3rd option, they don't know what they're talking about.

4th option. Belated April Fools joke.

seems like too little for me.

Has there been any word yet of the Mii's going through an upgrade?

For an HD system, Mii's facial details are a bit lacking. I hope they do get more options and customization next gen.

Mii's should be Hatsune Miku:Project Mirai like Nendoroid style...you can even play dress up there ~_~

Would fit perfectly but probably too big in filesize? Guess they'll stay the same as on the 3DS?

This console could be the second coming of the NES and i still would not buy it.

This tablet controller crap doesn´t seem right and from the screenshot´s i´ve seen, it looks entirely too big...

Ill stay with my PS3 this gen and upgrade to an next gen xbox (for a new experience) once those hit the market.

P.S What´s the word about 3rd party support for the Wii U? I can´t imagine it going for 1:1 multiplatform titles with Sony and MS in next gen console games.

there is no word on anything since no one is allowed to say anything, but logic says it will get downscaled ports from the developers who care enough to do that.

The real focus is obviously nintendo games in hd.

The thing with this years' E3 is the sheer amount of promise.

Nintendo have promised better online.
They've promised solid third party support.
They've promised more games directed at the core audience.
They've promised full HD graphics.
They've promised a new IP.

That's a lot to live up to. If they meet all this, then it'll blow everyone else out of the water. If it's somewhat under par, then we'll be left a bit disappointed.

Potentially, here's what could appear at E3:

  • Miyamoto's new IP
  • Pikmin 3
  • RETRO's new core franchise
  • DICE/Crytek/EPIC support in some form
  • Definitive multiplat versions (think GTAV)
  • Robust and exciting online experiences, maybe with Steam support!
  • A teaser of the next Mario title
  • Some SSBU info

This could be huge.

They promise a lot of things.

Nintendo have promised better online. But it still won't be as good as XBL/PSN.
They've promised solid third party support. But it's gonna fade once PS4/720 are released.
They've promised more games directed at the core audience. They'll get COD this year, but a nerfed version next year.
They've promised full HD graphics. On par with 360/PS3.
They've promised a new IP. AND WE'RE GETTING A NEW IP.

definitely a harsh reality that I agree with. But there is one thing that can turn the tides and make it not so bad at all, and that's nintendo's cash money. If they're willing to use it to create all sorts of game related partnerships, it won't be bad at all. Don't fully agree with the online part, I think it has a chance to be better in some ways.

They aren't tech guys and are talking out of their ass. The vernacular used in the quotes should have given that away. It always seems like the producers don't have nice things to say about the Wii U, while guys on the tech side like Mark Rein do.

...Saying that Mark Rein has a positive opinion about Nintendo hardware still feels weird.

As much as I dislike the whole Chibi style, I'd be okay with this.

Yeah I never was a big fan of anything SuperDeformed or Chibi like that (before somebody complains WindWaker was of course beautiful), but somehow they nailed it.
If Nintendo does that and the "Nintendo Crossing" online world idea that's so often suggested, I just might take a loan and buy a launch unit x.X

(Nintendo should do a collaboration game with Steam called WalletsMayCry, you can beat up gamer's wallets playing as the Regginator or Gaben)

There's even a rumor that the neXtbox is going to have a tablet controler too, if that happens then who you gonna call?
(besides hands on impressions suggest it's surprisingly small)

Nintendo has been promising better online support for how many console releases now?

And the online is still shit in every Nintendo console and nowhere near on par with the competition.

You should maybe read the original post for some info that you have missed out on, I hope that will help you with your interest in the thread. Then again, why are your here to voice your opinion about how you aren't going to buy something regardless of any situation when what people are doing in this thread is speculating about the machine, the hardware inside, the software it will have, the online infrastructure and so forth. I can understand you may not like the machine but it is not adding to the speculation. Why are you even interested in the machine and this thread if you won't even buy it no matter how good it is?

Your final question seems a bit rhetorical as it sounds as if you are asking a serious question, but you have already stated that you cannot imagine good outcome. Meaning that even if someone answered you you would be unable to envisage any other outcome due to your lack of imagination as you have stated. Sorry for ragging on you cord like that.

And boy, those millions of people sure made the Wii successful over the last two years as the Wii's sales momentum dived off a cliff into a fiery hell as Xbox and PS3 continue to drive video game sales.
For the last two years X360 and PS3 have been driving to reach this point: where Wii was two years ago.

Maybe I'm wrong but... do not this type of games need a lot of RAM to run properly?

I remember reading the WoW guys saying it is more to do with storage space as the footprint of the game is huge with each new update being over something like double digits (10GB) or so. So even if the Tablet works well for these types of game they would need space to store all of this stuff

I can't disagree with any of that. Seems pretty realistic to me.
(and they say we "Nthings" are delusional.. ha!)

I'll be content with my Nintendo games and an occasional gem tossed our way from a nice third party. That's all I realistically expect.

Well, that and a big bag of popcorn for when I want to spend some time watching the rest of the industry.. :)

Ohh I see...and damn that's a lot of space... and Wii U without HDD... go figure lol

The controller alone does that. While there may be a nifty screen on the controller, it is still fundamentally a controller instead of the Frankenstein nunchuk. And the horsepower buys you at least 1-2 years of equality.

There is a weird fascination with the whole "new Nintendo IP". It is like Nintendo keeps releasing "new ips" but they don't count. But one day it will count and it will be monumental and turn water into wine. Wii Sports. Wii Music. Wii Fit. Steel Diver. Big Brain Academy. Those were all new ips, but they didn't really count for some reason. Who is the to say the next "new ip" will be treated differently.

You know as much as I enjoy schadenfreude and overly dickish devs get a little reality check, too many great guys get caught in the cross fire.

Obsidian noooo~~~
Does it really have to come to this?

If this happens then I could definitely see a lot of Japanese devs shifting their focus to the Wii U. Which would lead to some interesting times.

Called it.

It's time for a prognostication, or at least an expansion on a previous musing of mine...

WiiU will cause a major industry schism, but not one that you might think.

I see the Japanese development community banking on WiiU in full force, with the exception being those who are only able to sell primarily to the West (see: Hideo Kojima), as a hope to returning to a one-console paradigm in the Japanese market and bringing life back to consoles there (it can not be argued that the decline in Japanese development coinciding with the necessitation of multi-platform game design is the reason for their decline).
Meanwhile, Western devs will either multi-plat as usual or skip the WiiU in favor of selling on the Xbox successor and, therefore, PS4, putting Sony in an awkward position of being a Japanese console with marginalized Japanese sales.

This will cause a huge divide in the gaming population that many predicted would happen with the appearance of the original Xbox, as Japanese gaming will see a surge of activity that puts them back in line with their former glory days and closely rivals Western output. This is what happens when Japan's development community finally bets on a winning horse again in the console arena.

CALLING IT.

Some time ago, something in this thread prompted me to look at my games library. I was a bit surprised to see how Japan-heavy the developers list was.

I'd be a-OK with this.
I am not a "something", HylianTom. :P

The way I see it is this: the Wii was an experiment for Nintendo, to attract a different audience and expand their market.
They experienced a huge success, but in doing so lost some of the support they had taken for granted in the past.
The Wii U is an attempt to recapture some of that support, and redirect their business model at the core market.
Whether they succeed or not is up for debate, but I can safely say Nintendo's next next console (i.e. the one after the Wii U) will be the culmination of their past ten years in research, development and experiences in the gaming industry.
It won't carry the Wii name, it won't be underpowered and it won't suffer from the implications they have had in the past.
It will likely be their best console ever created - it's just a shame the Wii U is a necessary step to reach it.
Don't get me wrong, I anticipate this year's E3 and what the system will offer, but I can't help but wonder what their next home console will be like.
It's a bad habit, I know, but something tells me whatever they do next will be extra special.

Hey, if they make a bomb on the Wii U like they did with the Wii, then they certainly have the money to realise the ultimate console for next generation.
I feel like the 'U is just a preparation, maybe even a stop-gap for their next effort in console based gaming.
Because let's face it, it is a Wii 2, to a large extent.
It's not something entirely different - it's like the 3DS is to the DS.
Sure, far more capable, improved features and a new selling feature (Tablet/3D), but it's an evolution of their past system.
Next time, I want to see something entirely different.

Let's hope so!

It's clearly that Thunder Monkey thing then! We need something like a MonkeySignal (he actually kinda salvaged the biz-thread).

Thunder Monkey is always scarily eloquent with his ideas on the industry. I especially love reading his posts when he's switched-on like that.

I wonder if they care at Nintendo HQ about the negative press they are getting atm. That developers are disappointed with the WiiU is on IGN now aswell.

For clarification: they're regurgitating the GI piece.

Nintendo probably are bothered, but in a way it could actually be good for them if it lowers expectations so much that at E3 people are blown away.

IGN would post something if a developer told them the WiiU was capable of ejaculating semen. This, more than anything, is the reason Nintendo doesn't combat bad press... because they know the state of gaming journalism just as well as the rest of us.

They don't really step in until mainstream media starts parroting the same bullshit. Which isn't often, since more journos in mainstream do things like "fact-checking".

Has Ninety confirmed a XBLA/PSN type infrastructure for games for WiiU?

That screen is not nifty in the eyes of dudebros. It's a children's play thing. Or, as you describe it, a Frankenstein controller. People notice the circle pads and lack of triggers.

1-2 years of equality is not even CLOSE to enough. Wii was fine without equality for 4 years. It's these last couple of years that have been killing Nintendo, and that they want to avoid next time around.

Let me rephrase that.

New IPs with an actual budget that aren't casual shit aimed at the lowest common denominator. Something with a story, impressive graphics, a great score (possibly by Koji Kondo). Their last REAL new IP was Pikmin. I guess Xenoblade would count, technically?

If Retro creates a new IP... prepare yourselves. It won't be Steel Diver, I can tell you that much.

Has Ninety confirmed a XBLA/PSN type infrastructure for games for WiiU?

I think they said something about it being more open and developer/user-friendly
with much less restrictions than XBLA/PSN

No friend codes is a WIN WIN tho... you should be thrilled lol

Has Ninety confirmed a XBLA/PSN type infrastructure for games for WiiU?
seems like it from what they've described and some have mentioned. They also confirmed the one account per system thing. All I know is the prospect of sending people video messages using the controller already sounds like more fun than xbl/psn.
