Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

I'm looking forward to how the Wii U version turns out.
I'll tell you how, it's a sub based mmo, and it's square enix. Should still be F2P in some capacity.

edit: and it is pretty wrong to say FF is falling into obscurity. Very much wrong. And this is from someone that has been disappointed in 13 and 13-2.

It would be megaton big only because it's likely never gonna happen. They're having enough trouble getting it finished for PS3, a port would be laughable lol.

Also development of the game didn't pick up until a while ago, hasn't really been in "development" as we know it since 2006.

But that's why, it's being ported from the Wii U to the PS3!
Seriously though, has it been in development since 06?

Realistically they should go f2p with an ingame store for DQX.

I still wonder how this will work in a console environment where the hardware provider gets a piece of the action. I'm not familiar with F2P enough to properly comment on it, but with GRO heading to Wii U I do wonder how that would translate to consoles. I've seen it suggested that they would just take all the content and sell it like a normal game, but considering the idea of F2P I'm still not comfortable with that type of conversion being applicable/suitable. But Nintendo would have to make their money somehow and I don't know how feasible getting a portion of the separate purchases would be.

I think they said they entered full production for the game late last year.

I really think a Wii U port is happening. No reason not to. This game will be out in... 2014 at the earliest? Wii U will have a solid install base by then, especially in Japan.

It's probably going to get XIV as well. Gotta make up those losses somehow.

All will be known at E3!

I can see people playing the mmo but I just can't it see it sustaining a large population for any sort of lengthy duration.

F2P models are pretty brilliant when executed well. They offer tons of content for free, and even allow you to grind out and get paid content for free (if you're willing to clock the time), but for people who choose to pay, you get access to a lot more stuff. With successful F2P games you end up clocking in so many goddamn hours for free that when you hit that "spot" where free starts slowing down, you basically have no issue with paying for more. Everybody wins.

As for how they make money. I think they should charge for the game, but once you own the game it's F2P. So the split can still happen at that level. And then if they want they can decide a way to split overall profits from in game purchases or whatever.

Like selling the game for $15-$20 to cover Nintendo and retailers and then the 3rd party makes their money from the other purchases?

How exactly would it be a megaton? Final Fantasy is now a multi-platform franchise and you couldn't even say this was the first mainline FF to grace a Nintendo console since SNES considering it is a side game in the FFXIII universe.

Now with all the resources they have poured into the title, do you really think they will pass over releasing it for the successor to best selling console of last gen, along with a missing out on an easy opportunity to give their support early (and help build a RPG-centric fanbase) with a presumably simple port?

I don't.

Depends on how much free content there is in the game, but if it were possible to beat some sort of single player campaign from beginning to end without grinding a shitton and without having to pay anything, then go ahead and charge 59.99. I don't see a problem with that. But yeah if there isn't that type of content then just charge some sort of entry fee.

It all depends on what way the content is built, but the F2P model can work as long as the game is designed to take advantage of it. I played LOTRO for free for countless hours. Eventually I reached a point where where I could grind my way through or pay, I just paid lol. I figured I already got WAYYY more than enough value without putting in any cash, so it was an easy investment.

That's what the F2P model is all about. Instead of paying up front, you put out a great product, tons of content, and people will pay you later....LOTS of people if it's free.

But if they're worried then yeah, release it at retail at whatever price whether 15-20 or full price, and use that as insurance just in case lots of people don't end up paying.

I just feel like they could make so much more money that way. But of course square isn't a company on the up and up when it comes to the latest trends.

How exactly would it be a megaton?
because it's in development hell, so not only releasing it on one console but miraculously having it ready for another would be omgwtffff

Does Valve/Steam get a cut from f2p games that are on Steam?

Seems like a good example of what you are talking about is in this thread.

I have no idea.

i need that cake for my birthday
which is today

Happy birthday! Hope I'm not too late.

From the Versus XIII thread.

It's coming to Wii U. You can tell from the wording. Nomura is going to come on stage to announce it.

I'm officially adding it to The List™ :

You're jumping the gun a little. There could be a multitude of reasons that prevent Nomura from sharing info.

i hope this is true *crosses fingers*

Here's an idea. Nintendo should do a one-off and put Gary Busey as temp Creative Director of Retro with a $50-$80 mil budget and total freedom. That's a new IP I'd like to see! Just imagine the priceless lines and pure creativity/insanity.

And then, put Meat Loaf as the head of Kyoto EAD Zelda team in the same position and same budget.

Then, make it a competition between the two and you videotape the behind-the-scenes of it all, and put "making of clips" up every week on Nintendo.com, priceless stuff would be there I assure you and would keep us entertained throughout. Imagine the hilarity of Meat Loaf breaking down and going off on the Jap team because he doesn't understand the language and him and Busey throwing classic verbiage out every week. It would be a phenomena!

Then have Kondo and Yamamoto score it all. A new world of Nintendo gifs would be upon us.

Wait, the horrible singer?

I know. His mood swings were pretty entertaining and he seemed like a nice guy in general.

I remember someone saying he would be back for E3?

BG thinks he will be back, the neogafbans site says he is permabanned, but it was wrong about other users, so it's wait and see, even if he wasn't permabanned, he might of simply moved on too.

Greatest megaton Wii U game announcements that will never happen:

Chrono Break
Mother 4
Pokemon F2P MMO
GTA4 timed exclusive
Mach Rider Reborn
Nintendo X Capcom
FF VII Ultimate HD Edition
Jet Force Gemini Returns
Killer 7 Unlimited
Star Tropics: The Epic of Mike Jones
Rogue Squadron IV

hmm, I could totally imagine a new StarTropics as a 3D Action Adventure of sorts, to fill the Tomb Raider / Uncharted gap of Nintendo's portfolio.

Then again, I could totally imagine a lot of things.

I'd rather have a new Action Adventure IP than StarTropics. Unless Retro's doing it. Then it will be awesome.

Btw, what are the biggest holes in Nintendo's portfolio?

I would just like to say one thing....

CALLED IT. AGAIN.

I called Dragon Quest X going to WiiU when GAF's Dragon Quest Defense Force said that we'd fly into the SUN before we ever saw a Dragon Quest on an unproven platform.

And I'm going to call something else... FFVersusXIII is going to come to WiiU, and it will revive interest in the series. Coupled with use of Luminous Engine and a shortening of the production cycle, the series will come back from the dead.

Calling it.

I'm not even waiting for a confirmation. Between Nomura's statement, Square Enix saying they're considering FF for WiiU at last E3 and the sheer timing of development kicking back into gear? It's a tough amount of information to ignore. As far as I'm concerned, this one is "nothin' but net".

If FFvXIII does happen, I will worship you and grovel for more predictions in the future :P

Although saying that exclusives will return is rather bold. I honestly think that in today's age of high production values and HD graphics, publishers want it on as many platforms as they can.

If this turns out to be a dud, heads will roll :P
