Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

If I'm not mistaken, Nintendo said that it will also be holding a separate event at Japan after its E3 conference. It will likely just be a repeat of what we know, but there's always the possibility of getting some extra new information/ announcements.

If it's for Japan, expect a lot of Japanese only (at least, at the time of announcement) games to be shown.

Just for comparison following these news of no MoSys involvement with the Wii U, here's what the contemporary consoles (and some from previous generations) use for main memory:

PlayStation 3: XDR DRAM by Rambus
Xbox 360: GDDR3 by Qimonda or Samsung
iPad 2: LPDDR2 RAM by Samsung
PS Vita: Mobile-DDR2-S4 SDRAM by Samsung

Nintendo 64: RDRAM by Rambus
Nintendo Gamecube: 1T-SRAM by MoSys
Wii: 1T-SRAM by MoSys
Nintendo 3DS: FCRAM by Fujitsu

I don't know what Nintendo DS uses, so it's not included here.

Out of these, Fujitsu has mainly got RAM solutions for mobile applications and is probably not a good contender unless a custom chip has been made. This is confusing to say the least.

Wild speculation: Memory is three tiered:

MEM1: 32MB IBM/ Qimonda eDRAM (fast scratchpad and/or framebuffer, 1T-SRAM replacement)
MEM2: 1.5GB DDR3 (main RAM)
ARAM: 4GB Flash, 130/60 interface or faster (cache)
A fan of megatextures, I presume? : )

This is the first I've seen anybody actually anticipate the announcements coming after E3 in this thread. This thread has reached levels of hype I can't quite comprehend.

Well, we always have their "Not Quite TGS" Fall Conference, as well.
Depending on when the Wii U comes out, we should see more info there.

Microsoft says it won't reveal the next xbox at E3 2012 and there's a rumour from the same site it will be revealed at E3 2013.

Nintendo has the whole year free.

TIME TO HIT HARD!

If Microsoft won't reveal or release the successor to Xbox 360, Nintendo is still not entirely free from other next generation consoles. Sony could always introduce something, and Zeebo Inc. will be launching its new console this year. And there's also iPad 3 to look out for. But yeah, if Nintendo faces no competition from Microsoft and Sony when it comes to next generation they can surely quite easily move the market in ways they see fit.

It's OK, it's completely incomprehensible. But it's fun, and that's all that matters in the end. :)

lol iPad 3 first year of next gen could make the Wii U the lead Console most gen its the one that easy and cheaper that wins

Who the hell is Zeebo?

EDIT: Completely irrelevant console, that's what it is.
Yes, it's targeted to developing markets, though Zeebo has said they are interested in entering the US market. And it's apparently for edutainment, though its predecessor (Zeebo) had support from Capcom and EA, so perhaps we could see something from there. EA Playfish titles perhaps?

We'll see the same thing we see from them as we do on the Leapster and Mobigo...
Really awful edutainment games.
It's not even worth mentioning in this thread except as a joke.

How is that in ANY WAY a threat to Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft?

Zeebo?
The fuck?

looks like ...... wtf

I mentioned it just because it's described as "next generation". But who knows, with a good price and interesting titles, it could perhaps compete with Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony for demographics that have a low income. I could see it being fairly popular amongst parents of young children in Brazil and Mexico, where Nintendo is seemingly trying to establish a greater user base. But it's surely no threat, and it wasn't meant that serious. Just in the context of Nintendo being alone on the field I thought it could be appropriate to mention.

Wasn't full backward compability allready confirmed?

and after the 3DS i think also DD-Games are apretty safe bet.

Edit:

yeah, keep you old wii for that. Youu will need it for transfare...
...also you won't get any money for it.

Some news, MoSys' 1T-SRAM (or other technologies from that company) will not be represented in the Wii U:

Now, the 1T-SRAM technology licensing has changed, as I wrote here, as Invensas purchased a greater number of patents from MoSys in 2011. This may have lead to Nintendo ditching this technology. What it means for backwards compatibility, seeing as Wii incorporates the 1T-SRAM technology, I don't know. However, the secrets are starting to unfold. Now, I wonder what company Nintendo has chosen for RAM solutions.

So it's true after all.

What? That they're changing RAM?

The person that told me about (near) final kits coming out wouldn't confirm or deny it, but I was left with the impression that 1T-SRAM wasn't going to make the cut this time around. That's why I didn't talk about it as much as I did early on.

...

Could you remind me of other stuff that person told you about? We might be getting somewhere, here.

I was about to offer the same speculation.
