Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

SEN is hardly a killer feature, as long as NiN can be comparable to it, then they will be fine. A lot of people btw don't want to buy the next Xbox because of subscriptions, my friend bought a ps3 because he was sick of paying for gold just to watch Netflix in his living room.

Games bring you your market, and Nintendo's console will have the strongest library of games, that pretty much going to happen unless third parties have lost the will to make money.

Yes, SEN is hardly killer but if all your friends are staying on there, why would you switch? Nintendo's going to have a hard time to convert gamers who have their established network and gamerscore. Wii U won't have a gigantic graphical difference, especially with diminishing returns in play, and so if current gamers on X360/PS3 are satisfied, why would they switch? It's not like X360/PS3 aren't getting GTAV.

So they can dig themselves an early grave? If Sony isn't profitable within the first 2 years of their next console, things are going to get scary grim for their video games division.

Especially if the vita remains a flop in Japan.

Vita needs some Monster lovin'. Anyhoo, I think Sony has some amazing engineers, and they have learned their lesson on the PS3, the next machine will not have a bloated BOM, every penny will be efficiently spent and I believe it will be beefy.

If they create a strong console with first party exclusives like God of War 4 and announcements of the next FF or something at launch, I'm sure it'll be a much smoother ride than, say, the Vita right now. Especially if the PS4 is easy to develop, instead of the clusterfuck that was the PS3.

Why would families be interested in a tablet controller? It really isn't as large an innovation as motion controllers were.

I guess it really is up to Nintendo to think and implement innovative ideas on how to use the controller and demonstrate this to the average consumer at E3.

Who says that motion controls on the Wii U will be irrelevant? I mean a lot of games have different control methods on the Wii, and the PS3 has Move integrated into a large pool of titles. Wii U will definitely have games that still use the Wiimote as a primary input. Otherwise they wouldn't of bothered putting a sensor bar in the controller.

Vita has so many features that it baffles me that they didn't think about a title to show of all of the system's capabilities. Yeah, Uncharted looks neat, but this is a game made for a certain audience.

if SE won't get its s***t together i don't we are going to see FFXV before 2017, unless they rename VS XIII to XV of course, and i don't really see that going to happen

I'm pretty sure Monster Hunter is under lock down by Nintendo. Not to mention Capcom can become the most prominent developer on the Wii U with advertising funded by Nintendo to become more popular in the West with a proper console debut. Sticking with Nintendo seems to be a sweeter deal than sticking with Sony, especially if they get free advertising and promotion in the West.

agree, unfortunately sony doesn't have the publishing power that nintendo has in the west.

We'll see. What MS and Sony have in store for next gen is even less clear than Wii U's future. Sony just needs to make sure they 1. Don't price themselves out of the market again, and 2. Make sure their marketing is competent. I honestly don't expect either from them though.

Because everyone is ready for a new console and Wii U is first. People aren't satisfied with the current gen's graphics, that is why PC shooters have started to bounce back, and it's why everyone always buys the newest version of their game, because something looks slightly better on that version, and they can't go back.

It comes down to these console cycles being too long. Great in theory, until we 6 or 7 years down the road are playing these ugly things while dreaming of greener pasterns, I mean just look at all the hardware speculation people are constantly making, that subconsciously makes us want more, even if we are content with what we have now.

For 80% of the titles, I honestly don't see developers sticking with the Wiimote. If they couldn't get motivated enough to develop a title using motion controls during the Wii's height of popularity, why would they do that now?

I thought the back touchpad was pretty interesting. Shame only a few games like Katamari seems to use it meaningfully.

Hopefully with an actual proper Luminous engine developed, they can pump out games faster. It was pretty much fail this gen where they developed Crystal Tools solely for FFXIII/-2 and nothing else...

I guess people might be impatient but if Microsoft unveils Xbox Fusion at E3, people'll be saying 'I can wait a bit more for true next gen goodness, and my friendlist/gamerscore will be transferred as well.'

This thread broke my Sonic Dimensions dream and made me cry bitter fanboy tears. I ain't trusting this thread about Sonic news any more :(

I thought they made up at the London Olympics.

I haven't played any of those olympic games, but I'm pretty sure they were competing against each other.

in the original cut scenes sony was trying to burn mario with the olympic torch while mario was trying to kill him with a javelin... nintendo took it off because they'd have to add additional warning in the game manual regarding the use of a javelin next to an infant.

In Brawl you can let them even fight which was glorious.

Nobody won against me as Mario back then, and I always went for the person playing as Sonic :lol

lol, guys, wasn't serious. Maybe guek was right, people are pretty pent up.

Even if Sony's gaming division makes all the right moves, would it be enough to stop the bleeding in its non-gaming divisions? $2 billion per quarter.. how long could they last before we all start to witness very, umm.., "interesting" consequences?

Is it just me or is nearly every discussion on the gaming side today about the death of consoles and iPads? It's getting kinda depressing.

This will still pull people over, plus there were many Nintendo fans that didn't buy a Wii because it wasn't HD, and it really will come down to the games.

As for the Wiimote, what I mean is that soccer moms and anyone else who loved motion controls, still will want to play with the Wiimote, even with something vs something like Kinnect, the remote is actually less alien to people than no controller at all, and that gimmick of your body being a controller is not as fun as the gimmick of wiimote motion controls.

I think people are going to start adopting Wii U as soon as they see AC3 and other games they want to play on it vs PS360, especially if there is a noticeable difference (which can be seen very easily in lighting)

To me, this generation is about the bird demo at the conference last year, and Wii U is at least the version shown on the show room floor, so noticeable especially side to side.

well the ipad is the *bad* future lol

I like my iPad, but the idea of it posing any sort of threat to Nintendo is laughable. Nintendo is defined by the games it makes, and iPad will never, ever have those.

As far as I'm concerned, that's where my evaluation of the whole "iPad-vs.-consoles" situation ends. Pretty cut-and-dry.

If the Vita manages to recover, they could survive on it while working on the PS4, similar to the GBA/Gamecube days of Nintendo. Unfortunately, Vita might not deliver for a while and sales probably won't go up until the big announcements at E3/TGS. This is so depressing, Sony really fucked up their finances in one generation...I don't think/hope they'll bow out that easily...

I guess all the doom and gloom is contagious.

I think you might be a little optimistic or I might be a bit too pessimistic. We'll see soon enough. I don't think it's going to be smooth sailing for Nintendo and I hope they've used all this time to make sure NiN and the launch lineup is the best it can be.

Nintendo's strength is it's IPs and Nintendo develops its hardware to play to the strength of it. That's why Nintendo software is almost always quite polished and it's sales reflect this.

Sony and Microsoft, with their over reliance on third parties, are much more vulnerable compared to Nintendo.

The iPad is a really cool gadget and maybe I will buy one someday, but I don't take it seriously for games. Show me as much statistics as you want: when it comes to games it's shit.

I'm interested in the iPad too but the games and pure touch controls just aren't immersive enough. Good enough for some distraction but I need substantial games that I can only find elsewhere.

Not to mention I need my Nintendo fix from time to time.

I still think people will be too close minded about adopting Nintendo technology + migrating from Xbox Live/SEN. How can Nintendo provide enough of an incentive for gamers to migrate just because of the slightly better graphics in GTAV?

Again, unless NiN has a killer feature, it's going to be a hard fight.

Nintendo has stated, they will implement online unlike we find on any other console. So obviously they have something unique brewing. Will it be better? Who knows, but you cant count on Nintendo being different.

Color me on the pessimistic side of the scale (surprise..)
Nintendo is not only fighting engrained sentiments that have settled over the past two decades.. it's also facing a gaming media that reinforces these sentiments.

It'll take more than a strong E3 with a strong inaugural year to overcome this, I think.

And you've nailed my sentiments on IPs and third-party reliance along with how they relate to Sony and MS. And yes.. Sony makes nice first-party games. But I don't see their first-party characters floating the gaming division like Nintendo's do.

If next generation is anything like the current generation, with multiplatform games being the norm, and I think it will be unless there is a console with ~70% of the market. Wii U will likely end up winning next gen, unless xbox or Playstation really show a game changer, they have nothing to stand on, to really pull in their gaming crowd, and I don't think services like live are really enough.

I could imagine Halo 4 becoming relevant, but the truth is, currently COD has killed Halo's popularity, and there is 100s of shooters released yearly (or at least it seems that way) so while Halo 4 could become the next big thing, it only has as much of a chance as the next shooter, with maybe the bonus of old fans who will buy the game, but will they make it relevant like it was early this generation? likely not.

Your last statement is why I am confident Wii U will win next gen, because if all of these third parties start releasing their games on Wii U, than there is really no competition between first parties, and with Nintendo releasing first, they will have the head start that they normally have to fight against.

Nintendo has been fighting this kiddy image since Sega's "Sega does want Nintendon't", I did a pretty through post on it 30 pages back or so, I'll look it up if people want me to.

on E3: No, I think a strong E3 will do EXACTLY that, it took one year for Microsoft to go from xbox barely being relevant to 360 dominating the market, this happened because Developers targeted the box, I expect this same thing to happen to Wii U, because it already is the talk of GDC, and will likely be the talk of E3.

This last paragraph is just supportive, Sony and Microsoft's in house games have no chance against Nintendo, and all Nintendo needs to do to change it's imagine is to have GTA5 announced for it's console (as a multiplatform) and it's own hard core adventure game along the lines of something like uncharted.

So you both just seem pessimistic to me, but that's ok, I am just hoping I'm right and you're both wrong, in the end I don't come from the future, but I can see it clearly enough. (I hope)

Just glad to put my opinions out and have people read it :) It's extra satisfying when people agree too :P

In regards to third party reliance, I'm more disappointed in Sony. They had the built several IPs over the PS1/2 days. Legend of Dragoon, Ratchet & Clank, Crash Bandicoot, Sly Cooper are all series they could have cultivated into evergreen titles or made into a series. Instead, they drop it completely and ditch it for new pastures each gen. Geez, I like Sony but they make some hare brained decision once in a while. Their first party output could be so much stronger and bolstered with entries every once in a while, like Nintendo does with Mario in entries like Sunshine and Galaxy.

Sigh...but I digress, this is the Wii U spec thread.

I just don't think people will let go of something repeated ad infinitum to them throughout the years, by different competitors and substantiated by the laughable excuse of gaming journalism and media. Again, we'll see.

And it's going to have to be a really strong E3 with all boxes checked completely, and no sign of weakness at all that fanboys can whine about. Example: E3 2011 showed decent 3rd party support, better than Nintendo's ever had, really. Fanboys moaned and groaned as usual, citing worse than PS360 footage. Nintendo's confusing reveal of the new console (is it a new controller or console?) didn't help either. They cannot afford any more mistakes like this.
Nintendo's got to go strong, show that they can cater both to the casual and hardcore as thoroughly as their competitor AND offer some kind of incentive for people to migrate with their apparently "unique" Nintendo Network. Not to mention, it will also have to fight for mindshare with the likely Xbox Fusion unveiling at E3.

edit: Yawn, going to bed.

All I can say to the first part is that Playstation was untouchable, everyone thought so, they had over a decade with the market squarely in their hands. 360 and Wii broke that kingdom apart, and just in the first year of PS3's life, it was clear that Playstation's mindshare was completely replaced. People always think about the now, that's why the Wii was such a success, and I think people will change their tune with stuff like AC3, COD, RE6 and GTA5 coming to Wii U.

I agree that it will have to be a really strong E3, but that is the cards Nintendo is holding, there will always be people who complain, your example of inferior graphics is a perfect example, people are blindlessly bias, but that changes like the days of the week, everyone wants a new console, and if xbox3 is 18 months away, and Wii U only 6 months or less away, people are going to get on that train, especially for thos games I mention above.

Nintendo's network just has to work, it's game changing features are probably the whole coin thing they are doing with 3DS just expanded, anything Nintendo does, they try on the handheld first.

The iPad is a really cool gadget and maybe I will buy one someday, but I don't take it seriously for games.

That's pretty much where I'm at and I own an iPad2. It's more then just a cool gadget. It's a substitute for a laptop for me and a perfect compliment to my iMac. I mostly use it for browsing, reading magazines and watching movis and tv-shows and some ocasional writing. But gaming pretty much sucks. There is just nothing to play besides smaller games that usually get boring after a while. It's just not even close to being a threat to console gaming if you want your games to be immersive and actually worth investing some time into.

WiiU pad on the other hand seems like the perfect combo of sonsole and iPad.

Wii U will likely eat some of iPad's market, especially if it offers some of the better simple mobile games, like angry birds... and Triple Town (because I said so)

Not likely because nobody actually bought a iPad for Angry Birds (or any piece of the App Store). You don't drop $500 to play $1 games. You buy one for prestige, tech-fetishism, and the Apple ecosystem. To this end I don't think Wii U will have the slightest impact on iPad.

Did you saw the Kid Icarus AR Cards madness ? With exclusive ones available in special events on Retail, Publications, Club Nintendo, etc ?

It's a full wide promotional effort. We can draw some conclusions for the future marketing politic of Big N concerning the Wii U, furthermore with the inclusion of NFC. Expect new things for your games through these PAC (Physical Additional Content), a way to complement the DLC while pleasing stores & the medias, and creating some buzz.

It will be huge, i said it, the completionists around here will have a headache, between Nintendo Store NY NFC figurines for Mario Kart Wii U that will add new kart models, cards or tie-in products like food packages, magazines, from which you'll have unique outfits for cosmetic-purposes in Zelda, accessories for your Mii's, modifications/additions to apps, etc. We can also expect cross-features between the AR 3DS cards & the Wii U, if it can't handle them with the front camera or another one.

And it's paving the way for a distant Nintendo digital distribution approach, by limiting and controlling it through the acquisition of physical supports for NFC/Codes to read by the hardware, and by completing it with additional content.

Well, as gamers, if the software stay the same in terms of depth, and we have all that in plus, like in the Kid Icarus case (the game is very rich AND has AR cards), i'm in :)

Its not the most perfect shop, but I had to, the blurriness of your avatar bugs me so much.

Looks like we can add Silicon Knights to the list of licensed Wii U developers.
Guess , under the guidance of Nintendo; they could make Eternal Darkness 2 after all.
The reason they stopped working with Nintendo was because the Wii was not as strong as the PS3/360.
After the debacles with Too Human and X-Men; showing that they struggled with said "generation", time and better guidance could make for a good sequel to ED.
