I'm feeling weird after seeing the Link & Samus costumes on the next Dynasty Warriors...i hope such future "collaborations" on Wii U will give better results, look at those faces, it's a mix of meh and eww and huh ?
 
No way that GTAV is a timed exclusive. We should just be happy that Wii U gets the title at all and hopefully with some extra graphical polish and utilization of the subscreen.

It is quite interesting how Nintendo have tweaked their strategy with 3rd parties. Going back, Gamecube got some ports which did not sell well on the whole, so w/ Wii, Nintendo encouraged developers to design games specifically for that system. Wii U seems to be somewhat of a compromise: it offers hopefully enough power for next gen ports, but the tablet should make those ports unique experiences...unless Sony and MS offer their own tablet controllers, of course.

Something is just not right about man face Link...and no comment on Samus lol. That and Pokemon + Nobunga have been really unexpected collaborations though.

Though the face, doesn't seem to be an actual face. Since it seems to change depending on the character you put said costume (see the picture of "Samus" with black hair).

Actually, it's a rather interesting debate to have. Is TOO much sophistication/details thanks to HD graphics (increase of polygons, more detailed textures, effects, etc.) will not ruin the aesthetics of some Nintendo characters, how we became accustomed to see them ?

A too definite link may disappoint us, by making him too anthropo-realistic. Look at the Zelda Wii U tech demo, it seems Link's face is less crafted/detailed than the rest, like Nintendo force themselves to keep the smoothness, the gentleness of its traits since its first iteration in 3D (and even before with 2D cartoonish drawings for cartridge pictures, commercials, etc.), an impossible task with too complex geometry/textures. But the whole game need some coherence visually speaking, and it will be strange, in the case of a "mature & HD like the demo" to have very precise wood or ceramic textures, intricate art for its equipment, a hero draped in an outfit made of wavy textile/material, and be stuck with a smooth/blurred face. It's the same for Samus actually (for the rare parts when we'll see her without its armor).

Well, i guess they will find their own path to display their less eccentric and colorful franchises in HD (besides the SD/Cartoon/Abstract/CellShad approach of course), to profit of these graphical advancements without changing their universe, their artistic patterns drastically.

Ps: i'm talking about the real exploitation of the hardware capabilities and new visual features of the Wii U, not dolphin-esque Mario Galaxy or TP in 720p with increased IQ.

It's from the 424B4 (companies are required to file prospectus form 424B4 in accordance with Rule 424(b)(4) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1933) for InvenSense Inc, the makers of the gyroscope in the Wii MotionPlus/Wii Remote Plus and the Nintendo 3DS.

We currently depend on Nintendo for a material portion of our net revenue, and the loss of, or a substantial reduction in orders from, Nintendo would significantly reduce our net revenue and adversely impact our operating results.

Nintendo Co. Limited accounted for approximately 34% of our net revenue for the nine months ended January 1, 2012. We expect that sales to Nintendo will continue to account for a substantial portion of our net revenue for the foreseeable future. It is mentioned on InvenSense's webpage that the ITG-3200 Integrated Triple-Axis Digital-Output Gyroscope is used for Wii MotionPlus, and the 3DS houses according to unofficial reports an ITG-3270 MEMS Gyroscope. I do not know the difference between these.

The ITG-3200 is described as "the world&#8217;s first single-chip, digital-output, 3-axis MEMS gyro optimized for gaming, 3D mice, and motion-based remote control applications for Internet connected Digital TVs and Set Top Boxes. The ITG-3200 features three 16-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) for digitizing the gyro outputs, a user-selectable internal low-pass filter bandwidth, and a Fast-Mode I²C (400kHz) interface".

Seeing as Nintendo chose InvenSense for Nintendo 3DS, I see no reason to why they would choose a different supplier when it comes to Wii U. Of course they chould choose another line of gyroscopes. The MPU-6000/MPU-6050 family is targeted especially for tablets, so perhaps that's something they've looked into.

I believe Nintendo will try to find a balance between what we're used to seeing from their characters and something new and exciting with the HD graphics. By no means will they try to go for the more "mature" look, they should instead go for a more convincing and vivid expression of their graphical ideas. It's like the transformation of Link that you mentioned, they've pretty much kept the same cartoonish look for him, while adding new details. The tech demo kinda shows how they want to keep Link conceptually the same, but using the HD, re-invent him in a way.

It'll be interesting to how all the franchises we love will fare in HD though. Very interesting indeed.
 
I'm confused by the trademark issue. Is someone trying to stop them from actually getting the Wii U trademark? If not don't get why they would have issues getting it if they got the Wii trademark in the past.

I'm interested in what Nintendo does with characters' faces. Imagine the people in Oblivion. Then move on to the folks in Hyrule from Twilight Princess. And what would a Pianta person look like? And so on..

We could end-up with some really pretty faces.. or some, uhh.., interesting ones.

A UK based company called Information Technology Junction Limited has opposed the Wii U trademark because they feel the "U" in Wii U would severely harm their business. This company operates a domain called http://www.u-do.com/, and the logo for it is a "U".

Are there people here who don't realize the Wii U remote has all the functionality of the wiimotion+ controller? There must be...considering the large number of posts early on with people thinking Nintendo was "ditching" motion controls...

You can't, however, use the Wii U controller as a golf club/tennis raquet, hand motion, etc. etc... it's effectively relegating it to shaking and tilting like the SixAxxis.

How can you build a more "convincing" HD version of the heads of your anthropomorphic protagonists in your more conventional franchises setting, without detailing them too much, and then changing the fan's perception of them. I'm talking in the case of a non-cell-shaded/cartoon Zelda of course.

Even Blizzard with the already cartoonish WoW is struggling and hesitate to redo the original character models, because by bringing them to the level of complexity of the new races released lately, they could false how the fans have seen their toons since many years, deceive, disappoint them because the final more detailed result do not match how they felt, how they saw their character traits, shape, expressions, their graphical representation, from the beginning. They fear about their reactions and are really reluctant to do that.

I'm sure Nintendo artists will find their own way, but i'm curious of the opinion of others on this, how they imagine these IP aesthetically speaking in a HD setup, maybe some fanarts of that already exist.

They definitely look ugly. But I think that's Koei's fault. Link looked great in his guest spot in Soul Calibur 2.

If Captain Falcon made it into the Wii U version of Super Street Fighter X Tekken, I'm sure he'd look great too...

I don't think it's as difficult as you're making it out to be. We can all look at the TP Link and simply imagine him with more polygonal definition and less textures pretending to be details

Haha you are welcome. :) Hotel Dusk is one of the most underrated games of all-time IMO. It is just simply brilliant. I have yet to play Last Window (finally giving up on localization so will import soon) and Cing dying is just horrible, but I'm glad Nintendo still owns the rights to the IP.

I was trying to find an HD version of link, at least the Wii U's demo has a higher polygon link, if they just add a bit more definition, I don't think they have to make him look "real" I would keep it with the look it has now more or less, but with art that isn't simply rendered higher.

Something Awful is quite a neat forum. It's free to read most subforums, but it costs $10 to be able to post, and that means that people spend some effort not to get banned. If you're banned, you can pay $10 to get unbanned. If you're permabanned, then you can't come back unless you spend the time to forge a new identity, and then there are temporary bans (can't remember what they're called) that are like our non-perm-bans.

It's a good system that keeps out some of the riff-raff, generates income to keep the site running and improved on a regular basis.

Well, by "real" I just meant like you or me, he could still look not entirely human, think TriACE or hell even FF's art style would be fine too, http://www.bladegash.net/?p=35 just get rid of the scruff, and of course you have to picture link, but yeah that clean look is fine for an HD Link.

As for a Celda, I wouldn't mind them doing that for the 3DS or even as one of the hopefully 3 or 4 Zelda Wii U games.
 
Color me on the pessimistic side of the scale (surprise..)
Nintendo is not only fighting engrained sentiments that have settled over the past two decades.. it's also facing a gaming media that reinforces these sentiments.

It'll take more than a strong E3 with a strong inaugural year to overcome this, I think.

And you've nailed my sentiments on IPs and third-party reliance along with how they relate to Sony and MS. And yes.. Sony makes nice first-party games. But I don't see their first-party characters floating the gaming division like Nintendo's do.
These are my thoughts exactly. But just how does one go about tackling the problem of fighting these sentiments? Will they invest tons of money just to get their image fix with developers? Or can they still be proactive in other areas?

It's not an easy question to answer, but I'm open to suggestions other than the internet's "Not my problem" don't-care-because-Nintendo's-damned-otherwise approach.

I doubt we see that style Link in console Zeldas, they will probaly keep using toon/cel-shaded Link in handhelds. I wish they would go back to it, but I don't think it's meant to be.

I guess "/v/" was right: Most of the people here are more supportive of Sony.
And it's going to have to be a really strong E3 with all boxes checked completely, and no sign of weakness at all that fanboys can whine about. Example: E3 2011 showed decent 3rd party support, better than Nintendo's ever had, really. Fanboys moaned and groaned as usual, citing worse than PS360 footage. Nintendo's confusing reveal of the new console (is it a new controller or console?) didn't help either. They cannot afford any more mistakes like this.
Nintendo's got to go strong, show that they can cater both to the casual and hardcore as thoroughly as their competitor AND offer some kind of incentive for people to migrate with their apparently "unique" Nintendo Network. Not to mention, it will also have to fight for mindshare with the likely Xbox Fusion unveiling at E3.

UGH, those press conferences are no where near as exciting to me, especially when it's just numbers... does anyone remember the E3 they introduced the Wii Balance Board, that was by far the worst E3 I've ever seen from Nintendo, but I've only been watching their press conferences since space world 2000, and I did skip the one before or after the WBB one I am referring to.

Well, All ready for E3 now, have over 300 posts and have been a member since June last year. Time to go to bed.

Well, TP was on two consoles so it could sell to a market six times as large. It was also the Wii's main launch title with basically no competition so it had a ridiculously high attach rate (around 75% iirc). There was no chance in hell WW could even come close to competing with that, with or without cel shading.

Skyward Sword is probably a better comparison, and Nintendo keeps emphasizing that it was the "fastest selling" Zelda game. It's still behind TP, since it sold around 3.5 million, but it also came out at the very end of the Wii's life.
 
I do hope they release some solid numbers for Skyward Sword. Would love to know how it has done up till now. Same for Xenoblade and The Last Story. Perhaps at the next investors meeting.

SS will break 4mil worldwide if we're really lucky...but probably not

As of December last year, global sales units of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword equaled 3.42 million. I'd say a good 3.7 - 4.0 million units as of today is a good estimate.
