Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

No more Metroid Prime. I think it should be third person(since U-mote is the default controller), focus on evens after Fusion, and bring her back to her more agile nature. Give her some new powers, may go into more chozo related levels again, and really open up a new chapter in the series. Give innovative uses of the screen and provide some sort of streaming capabilities such as beautifully animated logs, character bios, history, etc.

Do not go back to Metroid Prime. Leave it alone and go in a different direction.

I agree. I could see Retro doing a spin off in the Metroid universe without Samus though. It would allow them to do other things like co-op and PvP that they couldn't do in the Prime games. The thing is, if Nintendo is serious about going after hardcore gamers again, they need a traditional FPS to help entice them and show western third parties they're serious. Who better to do that than Retro?

I think 3DS is where the mainline series will go for the time being. Time will tell though.

If it's a target render, it's a pretty bad one. Not visually, more conceptually. I mean it's a weird angle and background to use as a target render. For that I'd expect either a close up of mickey or a something that showed off the entire area without a quarter of it just being a blank wall and having some mysterious structure half off the page.

The footage I posted was of the Wii version, which definitely has the old cursor from the original game. What's in the picture could be a new animated cursor only seen in the ps3/wii u version, or it could definitely be something else (why would it be a fairy though?). The main thing that stood out to me is that it looks way better than the 360 footage.

I'm not saying it's proof of anything definite, I'm just pointing out the possibility that it's a wii u screenshot :-)

I really want to believe you but I just dont see why they would make the Wii U version look better than the HD versions without giving them an upgrade too.

LAN and optic audio out.

What?

Ummm...do you really think i was serious?

for me the "whats the orange port for?"-question is a running joke since early wii days.

?that's why i listed teo things the wii u won't even have...you know

i know what it's for. It's where the coffee goes in! :3

edit:

wait is that some kind of comic sans in the picture? Ewwww!

I guess I'll let the cat out of the bag. The reason why I believe IdeaMan is because I've been subtly saying the same thing at different times, though didn't want to draw too much attention. Some recent examples include.

So either he's a pretty good liar, or he does know someone. I'll go with the latter for now.

So because you've been hinting towards 720p, you think he's for real just because he mentioned his source's games also run in 720p?

PS: I never really doubted Ideaman. He does get on my nerves sometimes. lol

Will it have Wiimote support? I think that's the big question. They patched in Move support for RE5: Gold Edition, but I don't think that they've confirmed that they'll support Move in RE6.

I certainly hope so. I love pointer controls (I got a Move just to play RE5).

I really can't imagine it being hard to implement.

Yeah I'm not sure what you're trying to say here. You believe him because he agrees with what you think personally or because his statements align with what you've heard from other sources?

I'm saying I had enough info to know about what the hardware is currently capable of and what he said was inline with what I've known. Like I said either he's a good liar or he knows someone. I have a tough time saying it's just a coincidence.

It's not what I think. I was giving you guys subtle hints. I knew if I could say new hardware came out in the open without it being picked up, I could do the same thing with that info. :P

No offense, but what he's been saying is also in line with all the educated guesses in the past 2 threads. Doesn't mean i don't believe him, but i don't really see that as proof or confirmation that he knows someone.

Fair enough. But I can say it's rather accurate even if it were just an educated guess.

Ok, you tight lipped bastard :-P

Are you still holding to these estimated specs then?

CPU
Tri-core (POWER7-based cores) @ 3+Ghz
3MB L2 cache (split 1.5MB:768KB:768KB; maybe they'll increase this before launch)

GPU
600-800Mhz
640-800 SPUs
(I really think Nintendo is trying for a 28nm GPU)

Memory
32MB of embedded 1T-SRAM-Q
1.5GB of GDDR5 memory

Misc
6x-10x slim optical drive
8-16GB Flash memory
~1 USB 3.0 port (for HDD, hopefully)

PS: I never really doubted Ideaman. He does get on my nerves sometimes. lol

It's the teasing, right? Stuff like [paraphrasing]: 'I might leak something in April so the speculation can continue until E3'.

I can definitely see why that kind of statements are annoying (and basically useless).

I personally have no reason to change at this moment, but considering what Nintendo seems to be targeting from what I last heard (not detailed) it's tough for me to say how much that would translate to my guessed specs at this moment. Nintendo left some gaps in their early info that I can only assume to mean they were giving themselves leeway in what the final would look like. It still to me seems like devs are left "guessing" on some things. That may have changed more recently. And by that I mean the last month.

Or: "maaaybe i can tell you guys something but first...i will sleep for 21 hours...that's my scedule. Deal with it"

i like him. Really.

Hmm. You've also been adamant that Wii U wont be able to run something like samaritan at 720p. What would need to change within your estimated specs for that to be possible?

I like IdeaMan. He's very pleasant to have around, he has realistic hopes for Nintendo's next system, and I love his enthusiasm/sense of humor. I'm naturally skeptical of everyone who comes forward claiming to have info, but thus far I don't find his information to be that outrageous.

Then again, I really like lots of NintendoGAF. You guys and gals are a joy to hang with. It's been a long time since I've been so attached to a crowd of folks online, hehe..

All I really want from the Wii U is for it to be able to play the next generation of games. If it plays them at lower resolution, fine.

Another Wii situation would kill my interest in the system.

It's pretty much the same thing I'm guessing on right now specs wise. As of late though, I've begun to give some leeway towards the amount of EDRAM. I figure that if Nintendo wants to aggressively target higher resolutions with the time to make changes to the core silicon (CPU & GPU) dwindling before production for a launch this year, changing the quantity of their RAM, especially the eDRAM would allow them to do as much. It could also explain the "better but not dramatically different" reports devs got going to the next dev kit.

Of course, this is all Jr. level thoughts on the matter and I'm sure brain_stew, wsippel and the like are lurking with a pamphlet or source to smack this down with.

Well them changing the demo to FXAA for better or worse will really help if something like that were used in-game. Probably minimal to no usage of the Upad. And most likely at a minimum a GPU at the top end of my guessed specs.

Ok, Ideaman, close your eyes.

Not so much the teasing, but the fact that he keeps us dangling. I somehow experience it as offensive. Like we're supposed to grovel at his feat for some new tidbits of vague information. He decides what and when and plays us in what i experience as a condescending manner. Supposedly to fuel speculation. Like we're in need of more speculation. But i guess it's not really intentional from his part, it just comes accross as a bit arrogant.

That said, i do think he's for real.

okey dokey. Thanks for the insights :-) It's more or less in tune with what I've been thinking for awhile as well.

IMO the former is the most likely scenario, but that's based on filling in certain gaps with what I do know.

Great now I feel stupid. Let us put this under the rug.

the orange port is for the sensor bar.

You shouldn't feel stupid; I was messing with you, and at the very least you didn't bite down in the way I anticipated.

But, you should know that the real mystery is what's behind the front flap.

6 is going to be on Wii U.
There's really no reason to doubt that.

I hear 2nd hand from someone that would know that RE6 is coming to Wii U

Rosti finds out that Capcom is showing off a title for Wii U @ E3 that is under the Action Category

and then today Capcom comes out and says that all mainline RE titles need to be more "actiony"

Less and less of a reason to doubt it everyday if you ask me.

Hadn't Capcom said they needed to bring RE back to its roots after RE5 (hence Revelations)?

There was some discussion about what we were hoping for with this upcoming generation. I might as well put it all out in one spot. Bear with me.

Games-wise, I buy my Nintendo console first and foremost for Nintendo games. From Nintendo, I'd love to see them expand their studios so that their output is increased to the point where we're not stuck wondering why so high a number of their franchises are asleep for a decade or two between entries.

Even if per generation we see this much, I'd be elated:
- one 3D Mario game
- one 2D Mario game
- one Zelda game
- one Metroid game
- one Icarus game
- one other adventure game (StarTropics, Day of Disaster, etc)
- one Pikmin game
- one Smash Bros installment
- one Donkey Kong
- one Kirby game
- one Fire Emblem game
- one StarFox game
- one Animal Crossing game
- one F-Zero game
- one Luigi's Mansion game (or an equivalent starring the brother in green)
- one Pilotwings
- etc etc etc

As far as third parties go, my expectations are tempered. As grouchy and jaded as I may be regarding third parties, I'm rather easy to please (surprise!), and really don't ask for many titles - so long as they're made properly. My wish list from them per generation:
- a stealth game
- one good replayable jRPG with non-menu-based combat (examples, Secret of Mana: Symphonia)
- one Zack & Wiki-style puzzle adventure game
- one title that is a vague copycat of the Zelda series (example: Sphinx & the Cursed Mummy)
- one Metroidvania-inspired action-adventure game
- a small handful of quirky titles (think: Chibi Robo, Fragile Dreams, A Boy & His Blob, etc)

And a wish not particularly limited to either first or third-party works. Think of it more as a prayer for the directon of the industry regarding genre preferences and content:
I'd love to see Nintendo push the action-adventure genre as a popular alternative to FPSes. I'm sick of 'em (and of the culture around them, and of gaming media pushing them so relentlessly), and I think that it's time that another genre arise to challenge FPSes for mindshare and developers' attention. Adventure games - be they Zelda clones, Metroidvania games, stealth-flavored adventures, wRPG-flavored adventures, puzzle-laden odysseys, etc - are a genre that I could see gaining in popularity.. if Nintendo and developers were to push them. And what's great about the genre is that it's varied to the point where there's always something for everyone, so you'd see less of the "wait.. you don't play FPSes?!" snobbery seen in gaming media these days - and more inclusion of varying tastes.

edited and added for emphasis: Long live the single-player experience!

I'm older, I work too damn much, I have housework and family duties to maintain, and life is pretty demanding. If I get this number of titles from each generation, I'll be lucky to keep-up with just Nintendo's releases alone.

So those are my basic wishes for this upcoming generation. I know I rambled.. (forgive me!)

That's what I pointed in my last post. It's now part of the cycle to doubt IdeaMan.

Should the semi-verify post of llhere be added to the OP?

Also wall of text of IdeaMan incoming to explain himself?

I didn't see anyone doubting him. BG just brought it up by saying the exact opposite.

Casual gamer. :P

Not only would I be content with what you're proposing, I have a long list of VC gaming I have to get caught up with. I would be good to go with just the VC for a couple years at least.

One of the things I'm most excited about for Retro's new game is the music. I think the only flaw in their music is using synthesized choirs. Other than that, all the Prime music is excellent (although 2 had the weakest, except the Sanctuary Fortress and the lower section of Torvus Bog).

I would like to see Retro tackle sci-fi music again, but this time have access to real choirs or instruments when they fit. The synthesized choir just made it sound cheap, especially in Prime 3.

Retro's music comes from Nintendo SPD3. Kenji Yamamoto to be exact.

Phendrana Drifts still gives me chills. And the Space Pirates' battle theme was so effectively menacing that it caused my old akita
(<<< Jake, how I miss him..) to leap off of the couch so that he could growl at the pirates. Good memories.

The sad thing is, I like to go back and replay old favorites.. which takes away free time from me being able to play other, newer games. I'm a part of Nintendo's third-party problem in that I'm content to replay a Zelda title for a fifth time instead of buying, say, a decent third-party game.

I feel so guilty..

Huh. Well, I hope he does it for them again, and has access to real instruments and choirs when it fits right. :)

Seriously. I think this was the perfect level of menace. I think the Chozo Ghost music was TOO menacing. It just grated on the ears. But the space pirate music... perfect.

EDIT: Here's the Sanctuary Fortress music. It captured the atmosphere PERFECTLY.

You're such a dirty fan.

Me too. But that's because I'm cheap. I only buy like 1 game a year, give or take 1.
