Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

It's almost April! I didn't realize this month was going by too fast. I think we can wait a few more weeks.

Speak for yourself. I'm bailing out of this hell!

It's just a little over 2 months before E3 and I have nothing to inspire myself for the Nintendo Conference OT.

I mean, last year I had the whole "Cafe" thing, so I made a custom Starbucks logo and all, but this year I have nothing. :(

See.. I couldn't freeze myself like Cartman did in order to speed-up time. The ups and downs of speculating, the dissection of rumors and screenshots and interviews, the crests and troughs of the forum's emotional level, the arguing over whether rumor sources are or are not legit, the freely-available excuses to retell great memories from launch seasons past, etc etc - I'd be pissed if I slept through this magical period. It's like waiting for Santa and Mardi Gras at the same time!

Patiently, I'm enjoying this, one day at a time. (it might also be why I have little-to-no problem with how IdeaMan is distributing his hints/clues)

Aside: I secured time off from work for E3 week. But I did decide to not divulge why I was taking off. And since my town is relatively small, I'll have to make sure that I'm not seen that week, as my co-workers will be under the impression that I'm on the road. Which means I'll be sequestered in the house all week. My heart is soooo broken over this.. oh darn..

I think people are losing their shit over this 720p/1080p Wii U thing.

A 720p Wii U game with better shaders, better lighting, more effects and more polygons is going to look way better than a Xbox360/PS3 game in the same 720p resolution.

People are talking as if 720p games on the Wii U will mean it's severely underpowered or something. And in my opinion, I really doubt the NextBox and the PS4 will be able to have those graphic intensive "hardcore" games running in a 1080p resolution. If given the change, devs will always gladly trade resolution for having just a few more effects on screen.

I know it wasn't the same back then, but both the NES and the SNES displayed games at the same 256x224 resolution (with a few exceptions) and that didn't mean they both had the same power.

so what we can take from this thread so far is:

WiiU = 720P with Controller streaming

so when next gen his this will be the point trolls hit Nintendo with is that PS4/720 has all games in 1080P?

I can live with that

Pretty much. They will be picking at nits at that point, and they will look ridiculous in doing so.

It's going go look especially sad when "journalists" try to use this as a serious knock against Nintendo in their analyses of various next-gen scenarios.

so what we can take from this thread so far is:

WiiU = 720P with Controller streaming nearly the same stuff on the big screen
WiiU = 1080p with Controller streaming less stuff/more simple visuals probably depending on the genre
Fix'd. :p

And that, like everything will depend on the developer. Don't be surprised on seeing a few games at 540p or something (upscaled to whatever resolution is your set), while streaming basic stuff; like a 2D map. :p

Phendrana Drifts still gives me chills. And the Space Pirates' battle theme was so effectively menacing that it caused my old akita
(<<< Jake, how I miss him..) to leap off of the couch so that he could growl at the pirates. Good memories.

The sad thing is, I like to go back and replay old favorites.. which takes away free time from me being able to play other, newer games. I'm a part of Nintendo's third-party problem in that I'm content to replay a Zelda title for a fifth time instead of buying, say, a decent third-party game.

I feel so guilty..

I'll never forget that afternoon in November 2002 when I entered Phendrana Drifts for the first time and that moody, wintry theme started playing, it was magical.

About a month ago I finally got around to beating Echoes (Trilogy version, amazing game). I wanted to get back to my roots so I decided to hook up my SNES to my plasma using s-video using one of those handy GC/Xbox/PS2 multi cables and spent a few weeks playing through Super Metroid and got 100% items for the first time (someday I'll get minus 3 hours). Proof below (I have a habit of snapping my end game screens):

I love how Yamamoto used the Brinstar "Red Earth" theme in Echoes for Torvus under section and Ridley's hideout music for Magmoor in MP 1.

Last week I started playing through my Link to The Past cartridge again for the first time in over 15 years, good times. It's also amazing how the batteries in these old carts still save like a charm. Here's a pic I took for fun the night I started the file (the s-video looks great IMHO):

I love those batteries. They're quite impressive, and it's always fun to tell young'uns around here, "I have Zelda save files that are older than you!"

Why does this thread always inevitably become about Metroid?
Either Metroid or Zelda or Retro or the future of Sony & MS, resolution, RAM, framerates, BUS size, GPU, Reggie's body, Miyamoto's smoking habit, Pikmin's long cycle, the return of StarTropics, a console Icarus game, the insanity of the Smash crowd, how much gaming "journalists" suck, and how many days left until E3.

That reminds me. The controller supposedly supports 480p. So let's say you are playing a game on the TV, 720p @ 30FPS, if you switch to the controller's screen, could the FPS go higher?

fair enough now we know what WiiU's weak point will be at least for now it does not seem as much of a big deal

I guess I won't have to get a 1080p plasma my 720p will be fine :)
can't see that stuff with my poor vision

I think so, but I'd imagine most developers would lock it at 30

In all likelihood, we will probably be getting 720p PS4/720 games because developers will still want to use that processing power for beefier graphics. With 1080p you're talking about pushing twice the number of pixels which is a significant draw. Current gen consoles could be running games on 1080p, but they'd likely look like PS2 games. It just depends on the developers' priorities.

Do we have a list/thread of games that actually run in 1080p on consoles? Can't even remember hearing about one.

well maybe the power goes to AI and larger worlds instead

its good to be a gamer :)

Considering 480p is less than half the pixels of 720p, it should be fairly trivial to double the framerate, however developers could also choose to increase effects or AA instead. It depends.

i really thought more stuff would leak in the run up to e3.

this is sad. should make e3 all the more ridiculously anticipated though, if they can hold the veil till then without any leaks.

I was thinking how Nintendo might have licensed Autodesk Gameform/Scaleform in order to create minimal rendering process UIs for the Wii U Controller for those who want it to act as a mere interface when developers can better utilize the processing power for the main screen when needed. I think this will also make seamless transitions between rendering from the mainscreen to the subscreen easier, but that's just a guess.
