Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

A drunk Perrin Kaplan on a pogostick throwing barrels screaming "Do a Barrel roll, reggie!"?

Yes i know she dosent work for nintendo anymore... And for quite sime time now...

So some things I could gather about Lego City for Wii U:
- in development since early-mid 2010 with pre-production having started in 2009 already
- originally slated for a release in fall 2011 according to LEGO ads, obviously not for Wii U
- may have been renamed (Lego City: Undercover)
- definitely coming this year

Concerning the rumor of a dozen (or so) pages back regarding the GPU in the devkits being a HD4770. Since the source from this poster was vague to put it mildly ("developers") it has been discredited. But is it unlikely? To me it seems to make more sense at first glance than the 4850. It consumes less than half the power of the 4850, it's only a couple of percentages less potent, misses 1Tflop by a hair, already was on a smaller die, ran with GDDR5 as opposed to the HD4850, 16 ROP, 640 ALU...

Of course, does it matter what's in the devkit if both GPU's are close and final hardware will be custom?

More like- does it matter if the system gets great games?

I think the first two years of this consoles life will be tremendous.
Nintendo will probably do everything possible for the WiiU to become the
goto console for developers to develop on next gen regardless of how powerful
the other two consoles might end up being.

It was never rumoured to be an HD4770. The speculation considered the HD4830 (which is pretty similar though).

And yes, a GPU of that raw power should be possible in the Wii U box. Especially considering that it's possibly made on a smaller 32nm process, whereas the HD4770 was made on 40nm and the HD4830 on 55nm.

The GPU would not be a 4000 series shrunk, from everything we know, it's a completely custom part that shouldn't resemble any one gpu series from AMD too closely.

You don't have to tell me that ;)

I only use desktop cards to see what kind of raw power you can get in return for chip size and power use. If AMD has designed a 30W chip from complete scratch, it cannot magically be much faster than other 30W GPUs they have made.

I have a feeling this is my killer app for the Wii U. I absolutely adore these games, and this one seems to be open-world.

I just hope it isn't changed from an awesome Open World game to a lame strictly mission following game.

Most people seem to think the console manufacturers do their shopping at Newegg

It's been extremely frustrating, particularly when the discussion of RAM comes up.

It was always going to be a totally unique GPU.
I dunno why anyone thought it would be any different.

I was hoping for a tweeked existing design for the soul purpose of my being able to wrap my head around the tech. Now we'll need to wait for a detailed leak years down the line about the ins and outs of the architecture :(

Of course! And have you seen how absolutely cheap RAM is there? Nintendo has no excuse for not going with 8GB of RAM this time around, or even just a bare minimum of 4GB.

We should get a pretty good idea of what is can do at E3 with the first party games.

*pant pant* I just caught up. You guys are too fast these days.

I bet when I wake up, there'll be like 10 new pages again...

Did I miss anything major except for Ideaman's Wii U V5 devkit info?

I could have sworn Nintendo said they'd be giving more information out about Wii U prior to E3 months ago...

They will.
But not about their GPU, which is what he wants details for.
:P

Just more doom and gloom talk.

I know right! I just checked Newegg, their selling 4GB for like $30. Free shipping too!
Just pop it in and bada boom. This fucking company!

I doubt we'll get any information till E3. GDC was the best chance and any Wii U info was behind closed doors.

Unless there really is going to be a surprise Nintendo conference that someone said there was rumblings of. Was it ShockingAlberto who said this?

Probably not going to amount to anything though.

Great :/

Like i said, it was, by a gaf member claiming to have gotten the info from "developers".

Edit: "around the level"... which kind of doesn't rule out either 4850 or 4830. It's actually closer to the 4850 in performance. I'd be quite happy with that. That's a noticeably upgrade over the Xenos.

The specs that have been leaked have been pretty much spot on so far. The CPU is weaker than 360 which is pretty shocking, the graphics card is DX10 class, and there was 1GB of RAM last I heard. Now some info came out that the graphics card was around the level of a 4770 and there was possibly an increase in RAM - I have no idea whether or not those are true though. It will be the Wii in terms of specs in the coming generation though, that's for sure, in that it will be a bump compared to this generation but not even close to what MS and Sony will put out. What I've heard about MS plans mirrors Alberto - they are creating a monster of a console that will make graphics whore GAF weep tears of joy.

For me this is fine. I'm just happy to be able to play Nintendo games in HD for the first time and happy that PCs will soon no longer be chained to the floor by ancient technology.

I'm fine with a new Nintendo Direct these days, I'll try to save up my Wii U hype for E3.

Although I know one or two crazy April 1st rumors will try to shatter my plan.

Imagine a Xenoblade like this. ^^

Edit:
The funny thing is that the game actually looks like this (but with bad textures xD) & aliasing.

LC and C.A.R.S. (and perhaps Colonial Marines, depending on the upad use) are so far my launch games. Apparently that is without any knowledge of what nintendo might have in store.

The problem is, that just really isn't feasible these days.

Funny enough, IGN recently did a poll of readers to see what feature they wanted most in next-gen systems and upgradable parts was the winner.

So I take it that we still have no clue on when the next Nintendo Direct is?

I'm thinking we have Nintendo Direct, PAX East, the Investors Conference, and.. that's about it for events between now and E3. And I honestly don't expect anything from any of those events, except for maybe some goofy NintendoGAF hype before one or two of those events.

(and If I see ReggieGras-like photoshop silliness before a friggin' investors' conference, I know we've reached a new level where we can hype anything)

If the investors meeting is the 26th, then I would put my money as soon after that.

Interesting read
Does this mean: even more stuff for third party developers?

This seems to be some kind of a nice debug solution. Could this mean that some Wii U games could be almost finished?
