Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

Myspace is owned by Timberlake now.

Here is how they describe the TV thing

“We’re ready to take television and entertainment to the next step by upgrading it to the social networking experience. Why text or email your friends to talk about your favorite programs after they’ve aired when you could be sharing the experience with real-time interactivity from anywhere across the globe? As the plot of your favorite drama unfolds, the joke of your favorite SNL character plays, or even the last second shot of your favorite team swishes the net, we’re giving you the opportunity to connect your friends to your moments as they’re actually occurring. This is the evolution of one of our greatest inventions, the television. And, we no longer have to crowd around the same one to experience it together.”

According to the press release, the social activity will be handled via a smartphone or tablet app. If that’s the case, then it’s really not much more than GetGlue, Miso, and several other apps are already doing. It works, but it feels like two experiences, what’s happening on TV and what’s happening on your phone.
Think that hits the nail

It's kind of crazy how fast MySpace bit the dust after how huge it was, it seemed like overnight people just stopped giving a shit and moved to FB. Hopefully the FB trend wears out in the next 5 years, along with the recycled FPS trends. Probably wishful thinking though.

I remember the day I made my decision. Saw my friends using both, and Facebook just looked cleaner.

I think it will only hang on because of it's sheer utility, there isn't any brand loyalty or people saying "I HEART FACEBOOK."

Someone else think that Nintendo will try harder to turn Wii U in the default media hub for the family? They reach a great great success with Netflix on Wii.

Nah, there will be no concerted effort. If they don't follow basic trends in hardware, which is a one-time investment, why would they be inclined to divert resources to services that need maintaining?

Wii had Weather, News, Photo, Netflix channel, in Japan it had Food, Fuji print something channel, and a TV guide channel. I think they will adding more functions now that Wii U has tablet like interface.

Yep, it's like this thing is built for a universal remote. Shame we won't get as many cool/quirky stuff as the Japanese do.

That's true. I was thinking in comparison to M$'s initiatives, I guess.

I can only imagine the numerous "See? Look how behind the times Nintendo still is" articles from the gaming "journalism" industry that will appear if this is true.

In this regard I am quite happy that Nintendo is fastidiously gaming-oriented, and hope they remain this way. This Myspace deal sounds awful to the core.

A-friggin'-men. I will add one thing though: expand the Nintendo Channel and maybe even give me a Club Nintendo Channel. But those are gaming-related.

I've always said that Microsoft is in this business for its ulterior (read: non-gaming) motives, and Microsoft fans are going to have their hearts broken someday.

I'd expect nothing less from those.. persons.

Yep. I've already seen comments to that effect on N4G.

Let there be truth to "Xbox Lite". It will happen rather quickly.

its pretty much their fault Nintendo is adding these stupid things to the platform instead of sticking to games only

we had so much iPhone/iPad talk now we are getting a Nintendo with an apps store and a pad controller

thanks gaming journos

What is "Xbox Lite?" Sounds.. entertainingly enraging! :P~~~

It's supposedly the ARM-based, possibly set-top box version talked about in the past. Considering non-gamers were the ones to sustain 360 as long as it has been sustained, imagine how well Xbox 3 will do when that group converts to this rumored version? And well, you can see where it goes from there.

EDIT: I see your edit. :P

I'm imagining what will happen to the developers and publishers who feel pressured to fall-in line with Microsoft's wishes for more "AAAA" games if/when these events occur. Oh my.

what happened to MS going balls out coming right?

they have both Xbox Lite and Durango?

Now that I've gone through some comments, this seems to be a common belief. But the idea of splitting the userbase seems really, really dumb.

(and now I see that the "rumor" was a Reddit joke to see if the media would run with it. Ha. Ha. Ha.)

Why would Nintendo go with Myspace of all things? I don't know anyone who even uses it anymore...

Then again, it's Nintendo

Yeah, if it's true hopefully they're just using them to help make a Nintendo specific app as someone else speculated. 'Cuz the MySpace name is a joke now and would be bad marketing to have, how about partnering with Livejournal too while we're at it?

Microsoft don't care about having the highest userbase for games on their platform so much as getting their service delivery platform into everyone's living room.
If many more people buy Xbox Lite than the Xbox 3 and big budget games become a riskier prospect for the platform, so be it. Their ultimate goal is not to rule the world of video games.

they(MS) are going to fail at this... (see: Zune/Widows 7 Phones)

MS has a lot of money to experiment I think they are hoping to be the ones with the next huge thing and for many years now they have tried and seen Apple and others push pass them

Kinect may have spoiled there focus for the Xbox a bit. But since the beginning everyone knew MS just wanted a setup box your livingroom with your credit card in it ready to go.

I am just hoping Nintendo does not follow them too closely when they fail to be that next big thing

don't you love how reliable our news have been lately?

Actually MS is the one developing the AAAAAAA game instead of requiring it.

Two sets of ba... two different consoles

That's the thing though. It wasn't a joke to see if the media would run with it. MSNerd called it a social experiment to see if gaming journalism would "check the information" to see if it was valid or just run with an article about what he said. At first I just wrote it off after seeing his "social experiment" comment. But looking back at what he also said...

Its not really a leak. 75% of this stuff is known for the most part if you follow Microsoft carefully. I'm not giving out any trade secrets.

I don't follow your logic on how that WP upgradability bit can cause them harm from competition.

...

Now, I simply keep my eyes open for any little bit of information that seems possibly relevant. I have humungous mental maps of how stuff that I've gathered over time might fit future roadmaps. I usually have about 10x as many posts that I think of versus what I finally publish.

It also helps to seek & sign up for any and all research & testing opportunities I can get. When its under NDA, I don't give specifics; I'll merely hint at things people have already vaguely guessed.

I said before that this is also a social experiment. It has been very illuminating to observe how a story spreads among the media & how substandard the process of verifying information is. Most of all, I have been amazed by how easily the media & the enthusiast public ignore any attempt at ascertaining the authenticity of sources.

One thing is certain is that we've heard the same rumor from multiple places of an "disc-less" Xbox sku coming out. So there does seem to be an indication of something along those lines going on unless MS is "leaking" it to throw people off as I agree it would be asinine to split their base like that.

That's the point we're talking about. It's the one demanding "moar powah" that will be left cold.

Someone else think that Nintendo will try harder to turn Wii U in the default media hub for the family? They reach a great great success with Netflix on Wii.

There were times when the Wii briefly touched upon that. Nintendo has to have at least seen the success of Netflix. Something like a quarter of all Netflix streaming goes through the Wii. Earlier there were the news and weather apps which Nintendo included to try to turn the Wii into a centerpiece of the living room. If they can really capture the Wii's audience and market with the Wii-U, I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo went after YouTube, HBO Go, and other utility apps. Try to imagine a CNN or CBS news app or something to get instant TV news right when you turn you Wii-U.

There was a rumor about this around/after CES if I remember correctly.

So this MySpace thing is really just about the MySpace TV service, and would likely be right along side Netflix, Hulu and all that stuff on the user interface... right? I mean, as far as 'working behind the scenes' goes, well, so? That's called having meetings. It doesn't mean they're hatching some joint MySpace user account system. For that matter, doesn't MySpace have an age restriction?

I've always said the same thing. They are after the big picture, gaming is a stepping stone.

Just because MS has ulterior motives, doesn't mean they won't deliver a top notch gaming experience like they have this generation. They will just also offer a full media experience and integration with their phones if they can.

I do wonder what happens in the next 5 years or so if Nintendo do not take a bigger step into the non-gaming space too.

You think that's big? Imagine if it had OS level Facebook and Twitter integration. In game Facebook chat? The ability to tweet screenshots or post them as status updates? Yes please.

Will simply work way better on a system like this than any competitor currently available.

...dammit, got myself all worked up about stuff that probably won't even happen.

Is it safe to say that we'll see Good Feel's next game at E3 this year? We haven't seen a game from them in a while. We also head that rumor about them developing the newest Yoshi's Island a few months ago.

Nintendo should seriously reconsider their decision to not have the system play DVDs and Blu-Rays. If they don't want to pay the royalties, just place the options in the app store and let those who want it pay $5-10 for DVD and $10-15 for blu-ray.

Universal Remote functionality would also be a big deal.

The company made a big deal about how they always want the consumer to interact via their home consoles (specifically when Wii came out with 24/7 feature) but they are shooting themselves in the foot by not including the most basic way to do that.

26 days to go ugh T___________T

With the way they've been handling this year's information flow, I wouldn't be surprised if it's "26 Days Until Disappointment (again)." Sorry to be a Debbie Downer.

On the plus side, Nintendo being so incredibly tight-lipped has me near-convinced that they're sitting on something big.

oh I'm with you on that but the 26 day countdown make the month after that disappointment easier to way on... I don't want to count down from +60 days

Iwata: Miyamoto-san, it’s that time of year again, April 1st

Miyamoto: I know. Reggie has informed me that he plans to pretend to increase Xenoblade’s retail release and give it a strong media push in America. It sounds like fun.

Iwata: Indeed it does, but this year, I think we should be a bit more truthful. Leak one of the new console’s features. The one that most would never believe.

Miyamoto: Sir, you don’t mean what I think you’re meaning, are you?

Iwata: *laughs*

Miyamoto: Oh my… I’m not sure how people will react when realize the truth. This one site in particular seems to be on the verge of imploding on itself.

I see your avatar all over this thread. Tell me bro. Quick answer.

If you've been all over this thread, you should know what we know about its power.

It's noticeably more powerful than the 360/PS3. That's about the only safe conclusion to draw.

EDIT: Whoops, thought your quote was on the last page of the thread. Thought wrong. Moving on.

More from the gamasutra article

"I'm not going to comment on any next-generation consoles, but let's say you're making a console [and you need our input]," theorizes Carl Jones, who heads up Crytek's engine licensing business.

"We'd obviously be saying, 'Get a really powerful GPU in there, let us be able to do GPGPU effects.' I mean, man, what we're going to see over the next couple of years on PC, with GPGPU, is just going to blow your mind. It really is an exciting, exciting time. [Crytek CEO] Cevat Yerli has come out before and said that this is the next renaissance of graphics programming.

"The guys are going to have the freedom to create bespoke rendering systems for whatever they want," he says. "You can have one rendering system for hair, one for skin, one for the bead of sweat on your brow, you'll be able to come up with complete solutions for each of those, and they'll be super efficient, running on high-end GPUs."

"So, I'd be saying [to console makers] definitely 'give us a lot of GPU to play with, and 10 times as much of everything we've had before, please.
[laughs]"

Ahh... subdividing the long wait. I see.

In that case, we need to find that list of events that Rosti posted where Nintendo will be present. That'd go far in helping us along the way.

what could be so big that it needed to be so secret?

Whatever it is, it still escapes me.
