Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

You can pay your way in for $800 but there's going to be some doors closed to you.

It's actually kind of scummy, because they raised the minimum traffic needed for your site in the last few years once they realized people would just have to pay their way in.

The year they raised the limit from 1000 unique visitors a month to 4000, it was already after everyone had reserved their hotels and plane tickets.

So they got a large influx of cash from people who had to pay.

But why do they have these restrictions? From what I remember it used to be public. As you say, people would love to give them their money.

Why does Vita even need memory cards? Shouldn't games save onto the game card like usual?

That's so stupid on their part. I thought originally that the whole point of moving to game cards was so saves and game specific updates could be saved directly to the cart. Speaking of memory cards, besides initial high price and not bringing over the passport program, the last deal killer for me Vita wise was ditching the memory stick pro duo for another NEW memory card format, rediculous.

edit: and I'd spend $800 for an E3 ticket. Especially in a year with new Nintendo hardware. Maybe next time around..

$800 for a ticket isn't a problem.

Flying from Toronto to LA and back is a problem. Paying for 5 nights at a hotel is a problem.

Getting in for free as a member of the industry would be nice. Someday! ; _ ;

E3 has never been public. They used to offer paid tickets to anyone, but the thought was those people were still folks who sorta belonged, like reps of CD manufacturing companies (though they didn't check if that was the case, it was just the reason they allowed anyone in). Now you can't even buy your way in without being a member of the gaming industry or media - you aren't held to as strict standards as those getting free tickets, but you still have to give them proof. And the reason is simple, they already have 60,000+ attendees, too many attendees and exhibitors find it hard to exhibit their wares to the press or business partners that they really need.

Sony's problem with handhelds has always been one of software priorities, not hardware ones.

When Nintendo makes a Mario Kart game, they make sure it's by the Mario Kart team whether it's on 3DS or Wii or Wii U or DS. When Sony makes an Uncharted game for consoles, Naughty Dog makes it, but for handhelds, they see which of their studios isn't busy.

The reviewers and the buying audience pick up on that.

Exactly, knowing that some of the same people who worked on SMG brought us SM3DL and that Hideki Konno has directed the MK game you just purchased whether it's console or portable definitely adds more value to the games. It's great how they've always brought in their A-teams for new portable installments since the GB days.

God I hate the Wavebird...too big for my tiny hands.

lolwut? Did you have trouble with the regular GC controller too? :P

Aye, thanks for this.

Still, someday, I'm getting in, be it a contest or whatever.

One thing that Nintendo have that Sony don't - a history of backwards compatibility.

The Gameboy Color could play Gameboy games.
The Gameboy Advance could play Gameboy Color games.
The DS and DS Lite could play GBA games.
The 3DS can play DS games.

There's always an easy upgrade path for previous customers.

Compare that to Sony.

"Hey. You know those UMDs you've spent cash on for the PSP? Well, you'll have to pay to download all those games again if you want them on the Vita. And yes, it does mean losing your position. Oh, and that Memory stick you bought for the PSP? Sorry, doesn't work. You need a new memory card and no, you can't play games without it."

It makes upgrading from a PSP to a Vita much more of a trial.

"Is playing your old games really THAT important to you or are you going to buy a Vita to play new content?"

That was literally the overall response I got to my complaints as a PSP owner in the Vita launch thread.

For an example of how awesome Nintendo BC can be, check out this pic I took of Metroid II on my 2nd revision screen GBA SP:

2 months, bah! Nintendo said we'd get more details on the Wii-U before E3, and I'm thinking it's because they are going to be showing the system off this month, for a beginning-of-June release, thus overshadowing any announcements by other companies during E3.

Technically, the Nintendo pre-E3 conference is before E3.

We did get a few more details in late January (NFC, account based system), but I'm hoping we get some more later this month at the investor meeting.

It's 2 WEEKS when I will be constantly walking into walls and licking myself...

I'm going to be near-worthless at work once we start to get that close. Usually I'm the workhorse who takes the extra hours and covers vacations and extra call, but my coworkers are going to have to, umm.. pull their weight.

They're not gonna like me once pre-order campout time and Launch Week approach either, haha!

Yes, playing old games is indeed that important to me! For each year, my division of new-to-old games is about 2:1, where I usually spend an average of 8 months with my new games and 4 months with my old ones.

At the beginning of each generation, my retro gaming habit is scaled-back a bit as wave after wave of new-generation games comes to us. But as the generation wears-on, I always seem to make-up for time lost. The final year of a Nintendo console usually provides plenty of time for backlog clearing and retro gaming. It's glorious, I tells ya! Glorious!

Shh! You're supposed to be looking forward to the next Expensive Blockbuster!

It's cool, but too bad nothing would support it.

Theoretically you could have it send the same button presses as a Wiimote w/Classic Controller. Using it as a regular Wiimote would require a switch or something, though, because of the D-pad alignment and buttons 1+2. Anyway, it's a cool, yet upside-down, concept.

I know.. having a diet that's relatively heavy in old games probably makes me a bit of an oddball, but I already knew that I'm out of touch in more ways than one.

Still.. those old, ugly graphics! Jaggies that'd cut down enough trees to build me a log cabin, textures so muddy that a pig would be in heaven, draw distances so short that I should pre-medicate myself in case of a claustrophobia attack.. pity on my poor, old eyes!

Thought you were going for a limerick there. :P

So the eshop...do you guys think Nintendo will provide HD versions
of GameCube titles or just straight ports?

Now don't laugh, would Virtual Boy titles be "doable"? I
presume the WiiU processor could handle the emulation?

Any chance at all the tablet controller has a 3D slider ala the
3DS? That would be a neat surprise. Or will the 3DS act as
a controller for the system?

HD Gamecube games on eShop? I'm not holding my breath, but anything's possible.

If they were going to do VirtualBoy ports, they would probably be on the 3DS. Possibly in more colors than red and black. Highly doubt it'll happen, though, as I think Nintendo would like to keep that thing behind them.

Everything we've heard from leaks and elsewhere tells us 3D is a not happening for the Wii U screen. They did consider having 3D when they were first designing it, but ultimately decided against it. However, they could use the motion sensors (and possibly head/eye tracking) to simulate a 3D effect for whatever is on-screen.

3DS as a controller? Probably just for certain games, such as the next Smash Bros. The screen won't be able to be lag-free like the Wii U controller, so the 3DS would need software running that shows its version of the action on its screen.

tbqh... at this point, if they at least provide direct ports, I'm more than happy
I don't want to get too excited about the thought of HD remakes to later end up dissapointed by the news that we're not even getting the games at all :(

Sometimes I really hate Nintendo's vagueness >:(

I think they want to pretend the Virtual Boy never existed.

Wouldn't be surprised if we got a 3DS remake of the Virtual Boy Wario Land (with no mention of Virtual Boy in any of the promotional material lol).

Inspired by a few very interesting topics I've seen over the past few weeks, I have wanted to ask a question but kept forgetting to do so until seeing another good related topic tonight.

My question:
do you guys see this Kickstarter trend as having any positive potential for getting hardcore games onto the Wii U? Or is this a trend more limited to PCs and the new unsustainable twins?

I ask because I think this might be a great way for hardcore Nintendo fans to get some decent content onto the console. It'd also be a way to remind third parties that yes, Virginia, there is indeed a good-sized population of hardcore gamers who are ready to plunk-down cash for good content on a Nintendo console.

If anything, I could see this kind of effort as being even more worthwhile than Project Rainfall-type initiatives. But I'm ignorant on the fine details.. thoughts?
