Can't use my tv right now, hoe do you enable games to display on the gamepad without the TV? I select the wii menu and get a messag to point the wii remote at the tv.
I do not think I should have to pay an extra $1~$1.50 per game to use those extra so-called "features". Furthermore, I doubt many would pay to use them if they could use the Gamepad controls for their Wii VC content for free. Currently, everyone pays the upgrade fee to play them on the Gamepad with the Gamepad controls, that's clearly the main selling point. Take that away and there's little point in "upgrading" your VC content.
So you're saying that you didn't finish one of the best games of the Wii because of how it looked on your HDTV?

Wii mode uses tri-core programing, it happens to be the same procesor family as Wii so the compatibility is pretty much 1:1, the question is if Wii mode is actually using Wii U resources or just updated Wii instructions.

I kind of don't see the point in doing this at all if they're not going to go all the way and allow the U Pad to at least act as a Classic Controller. Even for games that don't need the sensor bar (i.e. anything that uses the Classic Controller) you'd still need to set the pad up somewhere close enough to you to see it without actually holding it yourself because you're holding the CC. For games that do need the sensor bar, you need to do all that and also be near your console in the first place.

Yea and the whole inconvenience thing. The inconvenience part is more significant to me. I'm just a modern lazy gamer. I love RPGs but I want them on my 3DS. I don't like to sit at my desktop computer for hours on end either.

Yeah, anyone expecting Nintendo had a way to remap Wiimote controls will be disappointed, but this feature is amazing for me, and its one I never expected to get. I always wondered what the sensor bar on the gamepad was for. Now I know.

That line is horseshit. They could patch in support on the OS level for the Wii Pad to be considered a Classic Controller plugged in to a player one wii-mote.

Well if you find it big enough then good for you! Personally, I think it's far too small and needing to use another controller is more hassle than it's worth.
How is that more inconvenient than setuping your Wii U pad next to your console on a stand and use a wiimote to play the game?
It's like if Sony announced that Vita Remote Play feature with PS4 would work on the Vita and that you needed to use the Dual Shock 3 to play the game...
Anyway, I'll stop here. If there are some people that really like this, good for them, I guess. I still think that Nintendo could have done much better (like many of the things they do).

Then games where you can only use an un-plugged Remote, or need to use a Nunchuck, would have a conflict.
One that could easily be handled via a software controller overlay, "enable GamePad as CC1," but still there'd need to be some UI consideration there.

This makes no sense. You're just playing it on a tinier screen that still isn't very portable and the kicker is you still have to use the wiimote to play. How is this MORE convenient?

But that's not adequate because you can use the same argument to also ask why it doesn't function as a sideways Wii Remote and it's really awkward for the end user if you could play Xenoblade or Goldeneye but not NSMBW or DKCR (the later ones being about 1000x more likely than the former) simply because they don't understand that it's technically emulating a CC but not a Wii Remote. There's more here than just trying to get a single non-obvious use-case, at this point they haven't dug into controller config but once you move past it there's a lot of questions.
Well can't speak for himself, but I have been lately only been able to play anything that has Off-TV cause lack of access to TV. So for those who don't have constant access to a TV this is a neat thing.
I still thing the whole thing is very underwhelming though.
i have to use the wiimote to play no matter what. this is no new burden. now i can just play in front of my tv, then set it up next to my desktop computer (wii u console comes with a stand - it sets itself up like a mini tv), or play it in bed with the controller at my knees or on my bedside table. it's just easier. people are just in different life situations than you. i hate my living room - i live in florida and it has no AC.

Someone is using the TV your Wii U is hooked up to but you want to play Wii game, or maybe you just have a comfortable position, or maybe you want to be a room over. It's more or less the same thing Vita TV is advertising.

I'm in a situation where the tv is constantly hogged too. Yknow what would have been actually convenient instead of this half-assery? Gamepad controls for wii games that support ccpro. Like Xenoblade.
You don't know the full story so saying that is stupid, they may be working on making the gamepad a classic controller but didn't have it ready in time (which is why the summer update was delayed) instead of delaying off tv wii games and the classic controller they may have just decided to release the off tv wii support and will carry on working on the classic controller in the mean time.
That is my theory anyway...
You mean distance? Yes, it's still about a room or so depending on the environment.

I know that, I'm saying I hope you're playing in front of a tv on the gamepad while the tv is in use by someone else. Cause otherwise that seems kind of pointless
Funny that starting tomorrow, I was planning to get back into Wii Fit to get ready for the U version. This makes it so that I now have a personal screen to do it all on.

No way in fucking hell. Vita/Vita TV is the completely opposite of what Nintendo did. You can control all PS4 games on your Vita, and on Vita TV you will need a DS3/4 anyway, since the Vita TV is attached to the TV.
