Will next generation games be all about multiple platforms?

If I understand the expectations of the next generation consoles and games on them, the cost for producing games is going to increase quite a bit (at least until there are better development tools available).

The big part of this cost will be in the creation of content (3d-modelling, textures, animation), the coding seem to be more complex but by the same amount?

So would this mean that we will see more games going to multiple platforms (not like the PS2/PC/Xbox, Xbox/PC situation of this generation)? Since the content could be reused (performance will be about the same) it should "save" money?

Or are the money hats, fanboy loyalty and media attention for exlusive titels more important?

You are the experts, please discuss. :)

I'd say this but than SCII proves me wrong

it sold 725+700+500 on all three consoles. That's almost 2 million copies. Namco is TEH winner!

so MULTI CONSOLE FORMAT is TEH WINNER!

This forum is getting so fucking dull with 100

“What if this happened next gen?”
“Wow Dude next gen”
“Is my cock going to get hard next gen?”
“Will I finally get 2 use my needle cock next gen?”
“Wow vague press release about next gen”
“What games are you going 2 buy next gen?”
”Who do you think will win the console wars next gen?”

Threads!!!!

Meh now I need to go play paper Mario, and other fun games that are available to discus and PLAY right now.

Fuck the next gen! Lets post all this shit in 9 months.

Nintendo seems to be actively campaigning against multiplatform games - or at least games that offer nothing unique to their systems. Which could be a good or a bad thing.

Is it really that hard to understand the thread topic?

probably, even to the extent of cross generation ports.

So you'll have Fifa 2007 Leading development on PS3, ported across to Xbox 2 and maybe Revolution, and down to PS2, PSP, maybe Xbox while it still has a profitable userbase.

It’s also not hard to realize that

1. This forum is swamped with “next gen” threads.
2. My post does address the topic and the bottom line is

Everyone on GAF knows fuck nothing about the next gen, Nobody can answer your question just speculate !

Wait 9 months.

why can't we discuss the implications of multi-platforming next gen? Its not like you'd need specs to get into this discussion. My post indicated that as much with current gen scenario which applies to the topic of multi-platform.

so !!

that's cause Nintendo is delusional and the cube loses out in the multi-platform format for the following reasons; this is for THIS GEN

a) Xbox gets the best version

b) PS2 gets huge installed base

c) Multi almost always suffers on GC if it doesn't have the x-factor (in the instance of SCII, the appeal of Link to the rabid hardcore). It also strangely gets the weakest port in some instances POPSOT/SPYHUNTER... go check out IGN HEAD TO HEAD... and its not even the weakest consle ... and in other instances no... port (see Burnout 3).

I do think Multi-platform is better for developers.. Sega could have had VERY different fortunes this gen if they hadn't gone with their super peculiar fashion of allocating exclusives. If they had released PDO,JSRF, GunValkrie on the other consoles. They could have easily gained an extra 300-400k sales per title. This works in reverse with their SUPER MONKEY BALL GAMES on GC

Ok, but if you can tell from the topic that you have no intrest in the thread, then ignore it. No need to bump a meaningless question, right?

And speculation was all I wanted, no hard facts. Just ideas from people on this board since I find quite a lot of them to have a big interest in the industry and sometimes interesting opinions.

by 2008 at the latest, all third party games will be multiplatform due to rise of development cost. been saying it for quite some time, and will continue to say this forever.

I'd agree with what everyone else has said in regards to third party games all going cross-platform. It just makes sense economically. But the consoles still need to differentiate themselves from one another, so we will probably also see Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft paying developers big money to get an exclusive window for a big title game. Sony will pay Rockstar a truckload of cash to get GTA4 for 1 year, but after that period it'll be released on the Xbox 2 and Revolution, for example.

Of course, First Party games will continue to be console exclusive, but may get more PC ports.

I think nearly all 3rd party games will be multiplatform to PS3 and XB2 next gen. A ton of them get ported to Xbox even now, with PS2 having 5x the installed base. So it stands to reason that with Sony and MS very likely running a much closer race next gen, pretty much every non-exclusive game will get at least a XB2 port.

Revolution, though, is another story; not only is Nintendo going in with practically no momentum with 3rd parties on GC, but if their control interface is too different from the other consoles, that'll be a big barrier as well.

Depends on how much it cost to develop that game for all 3 consoles.

If Nintendo's "Revolution" is all it's hyped up to be, they're bound to segregate themselves even further from the industry which, imo, isn't a good thing.

It's a bad thing. Nintendo should be looking to get all the ports they can, if everyone had the same 3rd party games, platform decisions would then rest on 1st party portfolios (which they actually have an advantage in). Revolution needs to be at least Xenon spec, with a comparable interface (if only optional) and use familiar tools (maybe licensing XNA or sticking with Open GL since PS3 seems headed that way).
