Will single-player user created levels become a possibility next gen?

We're already seeing user created multi-player maps being created and played online. But (for the people that know a little bit about stuff like this) will it be possible to create a single player mission that can be downloaded by other gamers to play thru?

You could even have cutscenes and stuff to deliver plot using machinima techniques and use text for dialogue or if possible just use the Xbox communicator for a microphone and record actual speech to the hard drive.

Hell, MS could make it apart of the live service by sifting through all the user created levels and give recommendations on which ones are actually worth your time. Now, i know this is something that will probably never happen unless the console maker that offered such a service was able to profit by it. I just want to know if it is something that would be physically possible to do with the next gen consoles.

I doubt it. Not single player stuff.

What you might see (indeed the Elder Scrolls guys are promising it) its content created on PC for consoles (or 360 at least), as i say oblivion is going to have downloadable modules (hopefully player created through some kind of submission & ranking system). I think plenty of other games will see stuff like that if its popular in oblivion.

It's technically feasible this gen, and it even existed in last gen's THPS games.

So yes, it's a possibility, especially given that the saving medium will be capable of holding more data.

If level editors for console games were available on the PC that might help....

Making something on a console would seem to be a bit of a pain tbh.

But it's already feasible this gen. All you need is an Xbox, a copy of TimeSplitters: Future Perfect and an Xbox Live account :D

I downloaded several user-created single player missions, some of which nicely made and others very poor, but each one with custom environments, scripted bots and very different rulesets/objectives.

Someone should make an FPS Maker like those RPG Maker games.

Actually, i think that would be an awesome idea. And with all this stuff i've been hearing about the 360 coming standard with a hard drive and free online basic service, it seems that everything that is needed to create and maintain a community, around user created single player levels, is in place.

I love a good multi player game as much as the next but i get the most joy out of gaming when the entire gameplay and story is centered on me. Something that just doesn't happen when playing a game of deathmatch on the latest fps.

I just wonder, if it did become possibile next gen, how many other people would be interested in something like this. Cause, i guess if enough people were interested in it then you would think that some developer out there would take notice and try make a game like this a reality.

It will take a lot of convincing to get me do a level of my own again. The disappointment from the lack of fun in levels I created in Excitebike on NES is fresh in my memory.

Timesplitters Future Perfect has a basic version of this now in the mapmaker. You can create single player boards with objectives and all kinds of logic (enter this room, this door locks and this enemy spawns, etc..). You can then upload your level and others can download it. Works great.
