People are reacting as much to the aftermath as they are to the act itself. The guy assaulted a man in front of millions of witnesses and security, then he went back to his seat, yelled profanities, and received an award from the people in the room a few minutes later.
Then the next day the same people who are the first to condemn others for “bad” actions and opinions made excuses for him. They were more worried in the moment about Will Smith’s well being and reputation than they were about the victim. The people that are among the loudest voices for every “moral” cause revealed themselves to be complete hypocrites in a way that doesn’t happen every day.
So while the act itself is getting a lot of attention, what really draws people to this goes beyond the act itself.

He is a grown man who is accountable for his own actions. It won’t destroy him forever, nor should it, but he is fully deserving of any and all backlash he is getting. If he can’t handle it, he should have had better control over his emotions. If the average person did this to a coworker, they’d be fired on the spot and their career would be ruined. Will will be fine. We should be much more concerned about Chris Rock who did not choose to be humiliated in front of millions, then Will Smith, the “broken man”, who made a choice to humiliate both himself and Chris.
In summary, I do not give a shit about Will Smith’s feelings. He has infinitely more resources to get help than any of us do and this is squarely on him. I obviously don’t wish him any harm, but it seems like he took care of that himself.

What's even dumber is most of Will Smith's fame comes from comedy tv shows and movies. And Jada Pinkett was on a Different World in the 90s. You'd think if anyone in the crowd can take a joke it would be these two. And Chris Rock's joke was a 2 second one-off joke.
It's not like he's roasting some 85 year old US military commander with cancer, or has an amputated leg from wars.

And I agree. But most normal people can imagine being put into a position where their Wife/SO is being openly insulted and reacting badly to that situation. It's why Will is getting sympathy. If this had been at a Oscar party literally no one would care. It would be celebrity drama. But the fact it happened live has made an otherwise forgetful moment more than it needed to be.

Have you ever been to a bar or a club on the weekend? This shit happens all the time. The only reason this is notable is that it happened at the Oscars and the people involved are famous. Chris was wrong for making the joke and Will was wrong for losing his cool like he did. Neither are the devil incarnate. Chris is not a heartless monster. Will is not insane. He does not need to be behind bars and he is not going to have his career ruined because of this.
It's time for everyone to move on and quit trying to drag this meaningless drama out.

To be honest it doesn't sound like you've actually seen how this plays out in a bar. I'm not trying to come at you or make you feel bad, I actually like you and your posts man, but this shit does not happen in bars all the time, or at least it does not happen in that manner; I'll try to lay out how it actually goes down in a bar, as I've, unfortunately, been involved in numerous incidents of this nature in bars and clubs when I was much younger due to the company I kept. Dude makes a crack about Guy's girl, Guy approaches Dude, Guy hits Dude, Dude then proceeds to either hit Guy back or yell something along the nature of what the fuck or fuck you very loudly then start posturing, regardless of Dude's choice bouncers fall on both men and choke/beat the shit out of both while "restraining" them, then both Guy and Dude are "escorted" (read: dragged) out of said bar or club and tossed the fuck out front on the curb, and if either are dumb enough to try and get back in they get about three or four 250 pound bouncers throwing them around like rag dolls for a bit in front of the line out front.
In short, Will Smith's idiotic assault of a comedian over a harmless, mellow joke has little to nothing in common with the average dust up at a bar, if only because he fucking got away with it scot free, and no I don't consider his fucking "resignation from the academy" as a proper punishment. Can't figure out why people are taking up for him for being a virulent idiot out here throwing hands over a fucking mild ass joke. The joke was not too far, it was not inappropriate, it was grade school level silliness that resulted in hands that just weren't necessary on any level. People taking up for Will here are just fucking embarrassing themselves man, and honestly it shows me that you guys probably have some twisted, toxic ass relationship beliefs; the ironic part here is that it's mostly the people who pride themselves on being "progressive" who are taking up for Will here, in an instance where Will has portrayed perhaps the most regressive and antiquated behavior I've seen on public display from a celebrity since Jack Nicholson hitting paparazzi's at Lakers games, and at least Jack fucking warned the pricks to get away from his kids before going into full blown assault mode.
