Well I have no idea, but it's really annoying. Isn't the 60GB US console identical to the JP 60GB unit? Maybe you should check your discs...
Oh and one other problem that's been bothering me. Why on earth will the PS3 not play region free PAL DVDs? Don't give me "it can't play PAL signals" because if I rip the DVD and put an unaltered VOB onto a memstick.... oh look it plays! It's all kinds of bullshit.![]()
panda21 said:the reason it won't play PAL DVDs is it tries to switch to 50hz display or something and only the PAL units can do that. eye tv won't work on import machines because of that
Wow, way to be a dick Sony.Dragona Akehi said:Actually the PS3 has a PAL->NTSC converter chip, just like any electronics released after 2002ish. That's why the .VOB works. They're just cutting out the ability to play them because they can.

10 dollars as in 10 USD? :O Nice find Dragona! I might need to pick one of these up for myself.Dragona Akehi said:Well that's what I have my 10$ Xbox360 HD-DVD drive for!
my DVD player does that and it certainly doesn't get firmware updates. I wonder what that is?DECK'ARD said:My PS3 developed a random crackle over the optical out after one of the updates (think it was 2.7), and one time I turned it on and there was no sound whatsoever. Went back to HDMI for a while.
Updated to 2.8 and it all seems fine again now over optical, but the PS3's firmware has never felt 'solid' and whenever I update you always wonder if it's going to break something :-S
Really? Is this possibly why I am having issues countering attacks in Vagrant Story? With the weapons I have developed a rhythm but its harder for enemies. And if I wait til I actually see the "!" mark its always too slow.BoilersFan23 said:Now playing PS1 games on PS3 has major lag.

I might just suck too :lol but it could be contributing right?

obonicus said:The codes are letters now, but that's more or less right. But that's not really lyre's problem, he's having trouble playing region-free BRDs on the PS3.
lyre said:Okay, I have a launch US 60 giger PS3, you know one of those lochness monster units that has *your favourite arbitrary number* percent backwards compatibility with its far more successful older brother, the PS2.
However I got one of them new fangled Mad Catz Tournament Fight stick doohickies so I can play all the PS2 fighters I've had for a while now so I can wash some of the staleness of SF4 out of my palate. Little do I know the stick doesn't work with PS2 games at all and there is no chance Mad Catz will ever do any sort of fix for this since they are all too keen to dropping support for the stick themselves. So it all comes down to Sony releasing a firmware update which fixes this; however this doesn't seem like it's going to happen since they're more than happy to continue to not support something they haven't touched for a few years now.
ChryZ said:I'd guess they screwed up the authoring of that one bluray, maybe the disc isn't 100% complaint. I own 50 blurays and watched additional stuff that was lent to me. I never had any playback issues. My US/NA PS3 saw and played many EU/PAL releases.
Darkmakaimura said:Why would SCEA create an update for a product, which if you use, voids the warranty on the system? Madcatz products are considered unlicensed products.
Dragona Akehi said:As mentioned earlier, no they had no idea. But they didn't seem to really consider it important. They "put it in the pile" for the "engineers to read".
I wish there was a way for me to downgrade to the last firmware before 2.70.
Unknown Soldier said:I'm pretty sure that Sony said before PS3's launch that for backwards compatibility the PS3 would always enforce PS1/PS2 region coding.
Clear said:Non first-party controllers are always subject to odd behaviour.
As an example; about 10-years ago I was on the team who ported Quake2 onto the Ps1. Now on that game we decided to support using not only mouse+controller, but mouse+controller x4 using multi-taps. We discovered that although Sony's own multi-taps worked fine, using third party (Mad-Catz if I recall) ones didn't!
Presumably they were wired slightly different, all we knew was that it was definitely a hardware issue. Long story short, we kicked the bug "upstairs" and got told that so long as it worked with official Sony accessories the problem didn't exist.
Philanthropist said:Before launch? Any comments from back then aren't necessarily true any longer. European gamers can play NTSC PS1 games just fine, at least those from PSN. I don't know about PS1 NTSC discs, although PS2 games are region locked for those with PS2 BC, I believe.
Actually "pal playback not supported" shows up for other region free content coming from PAL as well - ie. downloaded PS1 games (they play fine on any PSP, but will refuse to start on NTSC PS3s).panda21 said:really? why? surely there would be no point in all but the pal consoles, and even then...
It's a responsibility of 3rd parties to make add-ons work (ie. follow standards set by platform holder).McBradders said:How is this MadCatz's fault?
