I've had a weird issue with my PS3 since day 1. Whenever I'm done playing a game or a movie, and I drop back to the OS, I get an electrical 'pop' through the speakers of my TV as the game/movie shuts down (right before the OS takes over).

I've tried moving the PS3 to another power outlet (ran an extension cord from another room) but it didn't help.

Sometimes that sort of thing can happen if two pieces of connected electronics are on the same outlet and not grounded properly, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

It's weird. And worrying. None of my other electronics connected to my TV behave like that.

I know one of the previous firmware updates have cuased Tomb Raider 1 and 2 to no longer run on the system. After underworld, I had an itch to play TRII since it was my favorite of the PS1 games. It would boot up, but when you tried to either start a new game or load a game, the screen would go black and it would not load at all. Tried TR1, same thing. TR4 still works. When I googled about the issue, apparently both TR games used to work fine but it was after one of the firmware updates that they stopped. Not sure if any other PS1 games are like that.

I was thinking of authoring compliance issues myself. Wouldn't be surprising, coming from a small company. It reminds me of the early days of DVD burning at home... a lot of software supporting DVD burning early on like Nero had problems creating 100% compliant DVDs, therefore some players just wouldn't play them while others would.

No offence, but the BBC isn't exactly a "small" company.

I've got a UK imported Planet Earth Blu-Ray set. All discs work fine on my US 20 Gig. FW is 2.8

That's really weird. My BBC Planet Earth Blu-Ray doesn't work.

Edit: OK I just decided to check it again in case I hadn't done so after 2.80. Planet Earth now works.

Maybe Sony is going to fix the problem eventually. Still doesn't help my Being Human (and god forbid whenever Dr Who Blurays come out).

I also read that a North American official bluray release has the same problems as this: Jethro Tull and Montreaux.

The issue with European BDs isn't down to region coding but how Sony changed the PS3's handling of 50Hz content.

The PS3's never played 50Hz content on BDs, but prior to that update if it ran into any it would just skip past it, so if the copyright messages were 50Hz it would go straight to the menu. Since that update it's thrown up an error message and gone back to the XMB instead, making them impossible to play because those messages are almost always unskippable.

A lot of major titles don't have the problem because the A and B versions are the same, but some from independent studios and European ones that are used to 50Hz will cause it to choke. Most BBC releases seem to do it, and I know that Twilight does because I rented it.

The issue was one of a few that pushed me over the edge into getting a standalone region B player. I just use that now and reserve the PS3 for region A locked stuff.

I have to say this is pretty ridiculous. I mean, it has the bloody converter chip on the hardware (which is why it can play 50hz 576p .VOB files).

It is mainly my BBC stuff, but there are other discs I have from EU that also don't work. It's a large part of my library. Even worse is that other Region A players will play them. BLAH.

I really don't want to do that, one of the major reasons I bought a PS3 was for bluray. To go out and spend more money on another bluray player seems ludicrous. I'm not made of money.

Because they fricking advertised BC, if the peripheral doesn't work it sucks.
This kind of attitude is really silly.

Why don't you just buy a standalone Blu Ray player? And a PS2? And a Linux box? And a PSOne? And a SACD player?

sorry for the bump but just wanted to let people know the blu ray problems i was having on certain movies not playing (let the right one in) have seemed to be fixed with 3.0
